Seem's that the later generations have lost touch with alot of blues and rock roots. This includes "Big Band", older blues forms, and those who go "Sure I know who Bing Crosby is, I always liked Fat Albert, or do you mean the guy who had the liver implant and owns alot of guns ?".

Quote: There were fewer people around during Bing's time (heheheheh).
This is true, but by that same token there were fewer people around during the time of Elvis Presley (almost 1/2 century ago) and to this day, on the Gold and Platinum charts Elvis is the ONLY artist (outside of the higher selling Beatles following his huge sales) that sold over 115 million. The Beatles were at least 160 million. These are the two highest selling recording artists ever. Regarding "over a million" sales, this is tough to confirm since RIAA didn't really get into these types numbers prior to late 50's. I've heard that Rock Around the Clock (Bill Hailey) sold over a million, and was confirmed. Just curious as to how an earlier recording artist would've been confirmed as "over 1 million" ?

Yeah, Shortwave radio and sunspot conditions, ground skip, and certain atmospheric conditions can bring in some VERY interesting stations .
I suppose that wasn't russian I was listening to after-all ! I thought it was Radio Moscow with the Alvin and the Chipmonks talk radio show.

Steven Kaplan @ Fri Dec 22, 2006 10:59 am wrote: I don't think so Unclefire. You are thinking of the shadow, or echo-boomers. Baby Boomers are characterized by the group conceived/born during the post-WW2 period of economic recovery and the -roughly- 15 year period of prosperity following WW2. By mid-late 1950's that period ended. Over the past years the definition of "baby-boomer" has become VERY generous, and lax. It NEVER included those of us born in or following 1955 or 1956. There were a higher number of babies born during the period post-WW2. THOSE are the baby-boomers. The period never expanded for a generation. It was a little over a decade period of time.
Unless of course, the definition was expanded upon over the course of the last 5-10 years. GW JR, Clinton, and many of the classic rock artists from the 1960's that are now around 60 years old, or those who were the 60's flower children, "hippies", getting drafted to vietnam, (or defecting) were the baby-boomers age and era. Not those that were born in that early period (1964). Those of legal age in the 1960's. Who were old enough to participate in the 1960's "free-love" "sex, drugs and R&R" period IN the 1960's, old enough to attend Altamont, the actual woodstock, are the Baby-boomers. Not those of us who were in elementary school or Jr High in the 1960's. Shadow boomers were NOT "the baby-boomers".
I stand (or sit) corrected. From memory, I have seen baby boomer moniker applied to those born up to 1964. But in checking a few sources, you're right. Those in my age group are considered echo-boomers.
But I think my reasoning for why they buy CD's is still valid-- The first boomers are just now retiring (60 yrs) and again, those have had significant exposure to music, technology and, to your point, some really interesting times (especially the 60's).
Peace, love and Rock-n-roll-- hmmmm, I guess is really sex, drugs and rock-n-roll...
oh, happy new year!

I don't disagree.
As for the "Sex, Drugs and R&R" Yep... Hard to believe I'm from a generation that didn't lose its virginity to a computer LMAO, or even a person whose name we knew, come to think of it.. I don't remember anything around that decade.

I am a musican/singer getting into the Karaoke scene. I'm also a Baby Boomer.
A friend of mine and I decided to put on a show at Dave and Buster's featuring songs of the 60's, 70's and 80's. We had never performed a show together. As a matter of fact we sing a totally different genre of music. (I'm EWF, Stylistics and he's Gary Buffet, Classic IV). But believe it or not, we completely sold out 130 tickets. The show was a tremedous success. So much so we're doing it again on Feb. 9.
People love that kind of music. It takes them back to when music was part of our souls.
If anyone is interested in checking out our show, get info @ www.pristinestudios.com\calendar.html

Yes, I can tell that you'd be a baby boomer based upon your name. "Crooner" isn't commonly used among younger ages. "Croon" is a term from the baby-boomer and older ages... I LOVED the Stylistics, Spinners, Commodores, Delfonics, O'Jays, Trammps, EW&F, Chi-Lites, Freddy Jackson, etc.. In fact I've done ALOT of work with that type material. Also made the transition into the 1974 genre called Soul with BT Xpress, Ohio Players, Cool & the Gang, to Funk, to disco....etc... But, the best ballads were late 60's thru the 70's IMHO.. The Philadelphia soul era.... Particularly Stylistics and Delfonics.... Will likely never be another group with the vocal abilities and compositions of the Stylistics, and later on the Commodores. The Commodores had that signature chorus that was quite pretty..
As in Sweet Love, and This is your life..
D Major/D bass--A Major/ C# bass--C Major/C bass--G Major/ B bass--

Very perceptive Steven. You named all of my favorites. I seem to have a knack for singing these songs very close to the original artists. They love that in the Karaoke clubs. I often get comments like "If I close my eyes, I would swear the original artist was on the stage". It's a great thing for Karaoke, but I am also trying to find and perfect my own voice.
I think to music of that era will keep itself alive for all time to come.

What this means is that I need to check out your subs in SS. I assume you have some submitted ? If you cover those songs well, I assume you have quite a range, and a knack for falsetto too. Can you handle EW&F type falsetto's such as "I'll write a Song for you" ? Gorgeous song.. He can really get WAY up there ! Is it just Bailey with that amazing falsetto ? or does White have one too ? I don't recall.

Wow! You really know your EWF. I love that song and can sing it note for note. I cut my teeth on EWF. "Reasons" is another one of my favorites. Remember "Spirits"?
What are subs in SS? I'm a newbe to this forum...

I feel i'm included in the tail end of the baby boomers and i'm born BEFORE HMMUNNN CHOKE!!, Sorry just choked on my dentures. Ok popped my dentures back in.
Please read your yearly social security statement. Mine tells me i will collect handily but of course it doesn't tell me my anticipated quality of life.

Yes Crooner, I was a member of the band that opened for EW&F 1974 at Saratoga Performing Art's center (SPAC) in Saratoga Springs. Pretty large crowd too. Place was filled to capacity (might've been 1975, not certain).
I don't know their repetoir as well as you do however. I know quite a few of their songs, learned the bass parts to alot of their stuff, and have always respected their musicianship.
Quote: I feel i'm included in the tail end of the baby boomers and i'm born BEFORE HMMUNNN CHOKE!!, Nah, you aren't older than Clinton.. That girl he was teaching about embechure during her saxophone lessons was just a kid anyway.. Clinton and Gore of course are Baby-boomers. Actually BJC, I doubt the baby-boomers first bicycles were 20 or even 16 inch banana seat high-rise handlebar (stingray) models.. Several years prior to our age didn't even ride on balloon tires. The bicycle tires would've been solid rubber.. Baby boomer generation I don't believe had inflatable entry level bicycle tires. My first 16 inch and 20 inch bike was just solid rubber tires... My first skateboard was made from metal rollerskate wheels screwed onto a piece of wood.. THAT was a bumpy ride !!![/quote]

i'm am so not a baby boomer (i turned 30 recently) but have to say that that era has my favorite karaoke songs. for some anything less than 20 years old doesn't work as well for karaoke, maybe because karaoke songs should be something classic, that everyone can tap intO? And I grew up with songs of my parents generation anyway! see we post-boomers don't listen to just rap / rock!
