FIRST OF ALL.... show me where I said income had anything to do with it. I'll wait........Someone is stuck in her dream world.
Second, I told you that I know of hacks that work fairly steady. Doesn't mean they are not hacks. Work steady with one speaker. Work steady with shoe box top speakers, only. Work steady with no new music for the last 5 years. I have heard about hundreds of hacks that seem to get work. Doesn't mean they are good, it means they play for a lot less money than I would even think about playing for. And you also wouldn't play for their, money.

I didn't think you were judging by income level; I just wanted to make sure I understood that. It sounds like income level has very little to do with your definition, which is a good thing. Trust me, Bigdog, you and your opinions are not a part of my dream world in any way.
I suppose I should wander back to the topic. I like the KJ competition idea. It might be interesting to see the hacks (at least the ones that bother to show up) compete with the pros, and it might point out which are hacks and which merely newbies that do not have the means to start off big. Okay, Bigdog, I will agree with you in advance, you shouldn't do it unless you are sincere about walking the walk, but everybody has to start somewhere and if you don't have the dollars, then you spend what you can and grow. The growth, or lack thereof, can help define the hacks.
Okay, back on topic. I like the KJ competition idea.

Why does karaoke seem to be the only business everyone wants to start without enough money? Shine shoes til you get the money. Cut grass, paint houses, take out a loan. But do it right. Not on a shoestring.
What else do you do half a**ed? Buy half a couch? Paint half the house? Buy half a new car? But half a dog?
Let's buy one speaker and become real good KJs. These half song disc are really cheap. Look the cables only have one end. The machines play one track. I charge half the going rate. We're successful KJs now baby.
Do it right or get a real "whole" job.

actually, there ARE good examples of buying things half way...
buy a CHEAPER couch... use it until you can afford to get a better one.
buy a cheaper chair or other furniture.
Once you can afford it, sell your cheapies and get the good ones.
EVERY KID THAT MOVES OUT ON THEIR OWN KNOWS THIS INSTINCTIVELY!
As far as karaoke, I do agree that you need to have a certain standard before you venture out on your own. I was collecting karaoke cdgs for about four years before I finally did my own thing. And for two years, I had folks trying to tell me that I had enough music... it wasn't the sheer number of songs, it's WHAT I had...
I didn't have a great CORE. I didn't have the pioneers, or the SC Foundations... ONCE I bought the foundation, I felt comfortable enough to do it.
I kept tabs on what songs were sang. In the First month, the foundations alone (30 discs) were sang off 65% of the time!!!
I did have mostly inexpensive mics... but they worked until I could afford better. I borrowed the spare set of speakers my ex partner had, for a month, until I had earned enough to go buy the set I wanted.

Anyone and everyone is doing karaoke halfa**ed. That's why we have so many hacks running around undercutting the good KJs. If they had the resources to start out the right way, hacks would be non existent.
If you want to compete in a very competitive field such as karaoke, then you better come in prepared to do it right. You don't climb Mt Everest in a tank top. You don't play pro football without proper equipment and training. You don't do karaoke with one speaker. Or $50 Microphones or shoe box speakers. Your competition is using much better equipment. Use that mentality and you will always be where you are. Sucking hind tit. For whatever money you can scrounge up.
I aspire for much more. I deserve it. My pride dictates that I not embarrass myself by attempting anything in a halfa**ed manner. I always want to go for the gold. Being #2 is still a loser.
Still want to admit that being halfa**ed is OK? You may be able to justify it in your mind, but you will never convince me of it.
If you can't run with the Bigdogs, stay behind with the porch puppies. Mama will nurse you.

well, since I started out the way I did, and was in business for over 10 years, I think the half azzed way DOES work.
You're a fraud, little mutt.

No, I just invested everything I need in myself and my quality business from the very beginning. Professional from the start, no hack start. 14 years, still a working professional, never a hack. :O  :worship: I lift my leg on hacks.

Hooked up wrong as you say, I still blow by all the competition.
Gee..... why does everyone look so small, :O from the top of the mountain?
I have already agreed that hacks can work steady. The one speaker girl is a perfect example. 15 years as a top notch hack. None bettter than her. She is at the top of her little game. She should be so proud. I'll just bet she gets paid well. She draws a real quality crowd too, huh? Makes the bar owner as much money as they could be making. NOT....
I would be so embarrased. I can not ever picture myself doing anything as half A**ed as that. I use my entire 4 speaker system if I set up in the cellar just for fun. I would never use less and expect to get paid for it. LMAO LMAO LMAO
Whose hacking now???????

Actually if you went up against someone with the exact same equipment, hooked up properly & crossed over correctly, your system would resemble the 'hack' system. This you can be assured of. It's like you've stated, if everyone in your area is using 1 speaker & walmart type systems, then yes even the way you have it hooked up would blow that away.

Sorry to try and go back to the original topic here for a minute, but....
Tonight we find out the winners of the contest. I am very curious to see what happens as I was told by the bartender that I had the most personality by far and a great selection. He did think the sound was slightly tinny, but I explained that on the 1st note of the night, I blew one side of my amp out and limped the night along on 1/2 an amp. He was surprised, and talking to friends and patrons after the show, they coudn't tell anything was amiss. However, one of the judges for me was a friend, and fellow host. He knew of the problem, and tried to help me fix it. I thought that was great until he told me "I shouldn't be helping you, your the competition..."
Oh well. I will let everyone know if the hack with three speakers and 1/2 an amp pulled off the upset....
(checking for crickets at the return to topic....)

On topic for a while. What kind of an amp?
_____________________________________________________________________
It's great to be the BIGDOG.
Very true. Now tell me why do all of the hacks think they can be me with such crappy stuff. No investment and no clue about KJing. I'm not talking about 3-5, or 20-30, I'm talking about 100-200 in this entire area. How many in the whole country? Think it's a million yet?
I'm buying Wal-Mart stock. These wannabe are popping up all over the country. I'll be the KJ King and Wal-Mart rich.
I can be the King, using improperly hooked up equipment? Only in America.

Oh yes! Let us know! I am really, really excited about the whole contest thing--it is a total win-win, and of course we are rooting for you. When you win (not "if"), it is one more thing to put on your website to show your legitimacy.

I actually have what many would consider a crappy amp. It is an Audio2000s AKJ7075. Good luck finding info on it- I was almost unable to. I got it in a package deal almost 4 years ago.
I hate to say it, but other than overheating twice in that time (now using a small fan clipped on the back), I have had no problems (knock on wood) with it. I am probably what you would call a hack BD. I use a CAVS system. I have 10,000+ songs with less than 200 duplicates. I use a no name amp, wireless mics, and speakers. My pride and joy is my Mackie mixer.....
With all that going against me, being a singer first, I still have superior sound to 80% of the KJ's in the area and better personality than 90%. I'm modest too, see?
I have a day job. I host for fun and income supplement....

if you do a search on just the AKJ7075, it widens up the search parms...
http://www.atechglobal.com/amplifiers/a ... j7075.html
I use the older AKJ7000 amp, and I love it. While others may pooh pah it, I find other than a cooling mechanism, this amp is perfect for what I do, and I never had a complaint about my sound.
