Does this mean you sing when you feel it's necessary or is it once per rotation?  I know as a singer if I seen the host singing more than once per round, i'd be gone.  At my shows, I don't have time to sing.

it's the whole ego thing, Lon, and I totally agree. I also won't go to shows where it's "The Theresa Betty Experience!" or "STARRING KJ JULIE" or some such ego nonsense.

Karaoke is for the audience. The popular occurance of a karaoke show is supposed to be for the singers... and the host's job is to make them enjoy their four-five minutes of fun!

Period.

I agree that I'd rather run a pure show, and mostly I do. But I adapt and do vary my show depending on the needs of the situation. And when I DO play a regular mix song, I'll never do that during a "busy" show... the same way I remove myself from rotation after eight singers! Like you said, Lon, you're just too busy to worry about singing! Yes, some folks love to hear you sing. I think Lonnie's one of the best singers I've ever heard, and love to him him chew out a tune. But that's not what he gets paid for, and he's got the good business sense to do his show the best way he sees fit.

Not fulfilling an ego boost!

I only use monitors if I can't possition the speakers behind the singer. Instead of pointing the speakers in a crossing pattern, as I do for music, I point them straight ahead, or slightly outward to avoid feedback. I change their direction as the situation dictates.....I know how imortant it is to hear the music and your voice together. I've seen KJs with the speakers in front of the singer(wired mics), and no monitor.....most people will sound like they can't sing, if they can't hear the music, or their voice mixed with it. The singer and the audience hear the same thing, when I KJ.......I don't care to KJ much anymore for variuos reasons, but in the past, I've had some very happy singers....I'm a singer first and foremost(I mean I like to sing, I can carry a tune sometimes...)....but when I KJ, I don't sing much, just the first song to tweek things

I agree entirely, in theory and in practice.

I see no need for anyone to justify what they do or how they do it. I enjoy the fact that everyone is giving the tools I need to run a good show when I get back into hosting. I also like the fact that my Improv experience will get some use too.

When a sing enjoys singing, I feel that. I don't care if they are the worst sing I've heard ever. Well, I do care a little, but I get a great feeling when someone is sing their heart out to something that they feel, really feel. It can bring a tear to my eye. I will stop my conversation if I see or hear a singer singing something that is really heartfelt. I live for that.

Let me clarify a few things.  

1. I don't use monitors, because you can stand anywhere in the room to sing.   So you can stand right in front of the speaker to hear or wherever you feel you can hear best.    A monitor on a stage is for the singer to hear themselves.   It was made necessary whenever rock bands where so loud and the singers were standing right in front of the musical amplifiers, they could not hear what they were singing over the loud music.    Singers having free range of the bar, as in my floor (not stage) setup, a monitor is not necessary or practical.     That is why I choose $600 cordless mikes.

2. You are absolutely right, [highlight=crimson]sound doesn't[/highlight] travel at the speed of light, but the electrical signal from the amp to the speakers does. (Electricity does indeed travel at or very near the speed of light).      So it doesn't matter if you stand in front of a monitor or you stand in front of the speakers.     Both are speakers that are receiving the signal at the same speed of light.

3. I sing once per rotation, if the rotation calls for it.     Many times the rotation is not boring and takes care of itself.   But there are times when 10 country songs or love songs or headbanging music, etc is played in a string.   I will break that string with whatever type of music is required to gain control and to keep the mood going in the direction, I want it to go, to keep everyone there entertained.

4. It's the most powerful form because of it's ability to keep and entertain all age groups and musical taste, at one time.   The main reason karakoe has not lost it's popularity.

5. It's not the Bigdog show.   But with my ability to sing over 500 songs, of all types and tempos, it could be.

6. Karaoke is for the entire audience.   That is why I enetertain them all with total nonstop, continuous karaoke music.     I can do that, night after night.     No filler/dance music.

Anything else I can clear up for you?

The speed of sound is plenty fast enough in a bar that is only 50x50 or 100x100.   It's not like you're screaming in to the Grand Canyon waiting for the echo to come back.    You're screaming in to a mike 1 inch away.     Listening to a speaker 10 feet away.     If anyone can hear a delay in a crowded noisy bar, I'll kiss your A**.  :O
