I just remembered a discussion I had with a "friend" about twenty years ago. We were discussing different bands and their influences. I mentioned that Rob Halford from Judas Priest didn't have the same appreciation for women that he and I had. That almost started a fight. I didn't even know it would offend him.
I think that since then Rob Halford has come out. To me he was never really in the closet.
This is not meant to be disrespectful toward anyone of any lifestyle.
My mistake was to mention it to a homophobe. His mistake was to ignore an deny the obvious.

I learned from that lesson.

25-30+ years ago, men and boy's in our culture were conditioned to be homophobic. At least where I grew up.
There was no such thing as "PC".. It was called proper etiquette, and might've consisted of things such as holding a door for a woman, but slandering people, name-calling, and expressing hate wasn't pressed as a "biased crime".. Just a very different time period

Behavioral change and modification thru music , light and colors. There is a lot of work done in this field.
Quote: I have never heard anyone state the music caused them to fight, either as a law enforcement officer or hosting or attending karake, a band, a concert or DJ music.
Can music get people excited, of course, however it will not cause fights. Drunks, obnoxious behaviour, and hitting on someone does.

Play the song Radar Love in your car and drive down the highway. Tell me if you go over the speed limit during any portion of that song. If you did, Why? You were influenced by something. It happened to me the other night. I was over the speed limit for most of that song. I
Thanks Jian.... I have read many books on the subject of color, body language and Psychology as relates to those. Red makes you hungry. That's why the restuarants use red things. Girls make you horny, that's why bars use those things. It's really simple and very interesting. Certain colors induce violence and others calm. Hospitals use calming colors. So to say music has no effect on human behavior, is totally wrong. Look how heat effects people in the summer. Tempers are more easily influenced. Everything has an effect on everything, ask Newton or Einstein. Look at the effect I have....

It is all science, but some people here just done see it. Dog use it for crowd control and Lonman use it to attract the right kind of customers but some just don't see it, to even use it to their advantage.

Mike is absolutely right... the music CAN and DOES influence the singers and regulars. You can diffuse a situation from brewing by CONSTANTLY changing the music types you play. That's one reason I love music between singers.
If I have a scresming rcok or pop songs, then a classic rock or country song gets played between singers, and vice-versa if country is being sang.
DJ music is done essentially the same, although I profess that Tig is by far the experienced one to talk about that. I've only done a few dj shows, and in no way will I ever call myself an expert. Heck, DJin' is the only time I really felt I had to EARN my money. It's very complex to sit there and play song after song, keeping everyone happy, and yet not lose control of the room!!
As for the fights part of it all, sometimes random stuff happens. Hey, if the guy is sitting there and suddenly finds out his lady cheated on him, "BOOM!" You can't control the INSTANT factor. What you normally can control is what happens right after that.
Most experienced "fighters" can read the energy in a room... Tig is awesome at this, and I'm usually pretty good at it. I can't tell you the number of times we walked into a club and immediately picked out the "bad" parts... where the person sitting there quietly nursing a beer and he's cleared away some of the tables near him JUST because he's being so intense. Peaple usually are pretty receptive to picking up on those kind of sensations.

Certain things do play a part in the kindling process of a group that's already predisposed to certain behaviour. The biggest factor would of course be a hypnotic/depressant substance such as alcohol, Heat and discomfort would also play a large part, testosterone charged kids also is a very big factor in "bar fights". You might even add to that something similar to "mating" behaviour in alot of cases in a certain age group (hormonal aspects).. In all species there's alot more aggression during such periods... Bar's for many of us are and were "pickup" places(testosterone). Any study that show's "Music can incite fighting", isn't accurate unless it considers "In a group already predisposed to such behaviour"... Aesthetic's does affect us, but it affects us to a certain degree, and in VERY different ways... Throw together many other factors, and in the case of bar's add "altered stated of consciousness", age group, environmental conditions, and the whole setting plays a larger factor than just the music itself plays into the kindling process prior to the fight. Here are a few examples.
Sure, patterns, and flashing lights have been known to cause certain behaviour too. Assuming a person is Epileptic, certain rhythmic patterns can cause conditions (kindling) in the brain of someone predisposed and trigger grand mal seizures... Yet many less sensitive to the stimuli, will instead experience nothing at all. Perhaps slight disturbance.. When certain things happen, you must also consider the group that it's happening with... Play hard rock for a group of elderly people, and in many cases will they fight ? Of course not, but they might ask you to turn down the loud music that is irritating them. Sure extraneous factors affect us, but in different ways... For instance...Cultural conditioning also plays a large part in certain behaviour, as does the individuals chemistry...
Quote: Play the song Radar Love in your car and drive down the highway. Tell me if you go over the speed limit during any portion of that song. If you did, Why? You were influenced by something. Nope, wouldn't go over the speed limit during such a song, but I would cringe and try to change the station channel because I find the song annoying... but when YOU play the song radar love, it might have that adrenaline inducing affect..In my case it would just irritate me, it wouldn't penetrate to any profound degree at all. Play Magic carpet ride, born to be wild for a 70 year old woman... Is she going to put the "pedal to the metal" and start driving at 90 mph ? of course not... These things only affect certain groups ALREADY predisposed to certain behaviour. Some would even call certain catalysts "A poor excuse for allowing yourself to lose control, because as adults old enough to have certain freedoms, we must learn to take responsibility for our impulse control". Quote: Behavioral change and modification thru music , light and colors. There is a lot of work done in this field.
Yes, I've done some research in this area. As with all studies, you must consider MANY underlying factors as well...IE.... Bar group of 18-30 year old males predominately, alcohol factored in... Is the bars A/C on ? or is it a hot and crowded condition ?.. Are there females around ?...etc.... All beyond this is just incidental.. Not a primary condition..
When you change certain factors, the reactions are different. Music can be a catalyst for "bar fights", assuming the group is already unstable. At my age, I'd likely not be predisposed to fighting because of music anymore, I'd instead feel somewhat irritated by the music, and leave the bar as a result...
Depends on the group you are sampling...

Music is still NOT the cause. Most of the other stuff mentioned are used in clinical or controlled type settings.

I tend to agree with Kappy's post. Especially when it comes to personal responsibility.
Keep in mind that in this country people can sue for things that they could have avoided by themselves, such as hot coffee in the lap, DUH!
Also, some people actually go lookin' for a fight.

Here is an example of absolute crowd control using a jukebox.. When the cd jukeboxes came out they were totally programable according to day of the week or time of day.You could set price or even have free play periods.
Ok here is the trick.. In a country bar you progam it to play about 6"soul" songs about 30 min before happy hour... All of a sudden you people feeding dollar bills into the jukebox just as fast as it will take them. If a soul song happened to play again same process.....
Music lights booze and mary j in a disco type setting produces all kinds of emotions.....
I finaaly learned if a brawl started I grabbed whoever i was with and hit the back door. One night I grabbed a bottle of rum and we sat across the street watching them load everybody up in paddy wagons. This was in Jaurez......

Wouldn't affect me, on the highway I use my cruise control.

I aggree with Chuck. There are people that go out and just look for a fight. Rich and I were out one night and this guys comes in, he didn't say a word to me. He went up to Rich and was going to beat him up. The reason why you ask? He was going to beat MY HUSBAND up and then I was going to go home with him.....

I'd like to know what songs you keep out of your books or don't allow people to sing that cause fights? People pick their own songs, so you must be sensoring your song choices.
I know there isn't any music that gets sung in my bar that would entice a unruly
crowd, but I'm curious as to what these songs are. I'm assuming heavy metal?
I have a 50 year old woman that sings Radar Love. I've never had anyone start a
fight when she sang.

In our case we took out anything with profanity in the lyrics which excluded pretty much all rap some R&B 'featuring' rap guest stars, a bunch of the new hardcore rock/rap-rock.

I won't add in the "urban" discs from THM... I get their monthly six packs, which is the country disc, pop, rock, and two misc, and the urban. I just don't add it. Not even on my pc... still on the DISC that they send me each month!
Certain songs are requested by the bar I used to work at... but they handled that on a case by case situation.
