Actually I'm glad I never bothered, we all know Manic-Depressive people never become musicians. Sorry for this, I got carried away. It seems that maybe I enjoy drama a little too much. Maybe I should have taken acting and persued that instead.
Chuck, I get what you are saying...You were, and still are, passionate about music....But in your case and many people's case, so is food to eat to keep you (and your mom and sister) alive and a roof over your head. Gosh, if you don't eat then you can't sing at all, right??
Some people just have never been at that poverty level and don't understand the choices that have to be made.

Misti,
What I find helpful is that, in reading sheet music it tells you where to breathe...If there are particular songs you plan on auditioning with I would suggest getting the sheet music to rehearse from and a vocal coach, if you can afford that.
Good luck!!!
And before the audition can you give us a picture of you and your name so we can root for you when you make it...
And don't smoke
And since you will be singing acappella I would suggest recording yourself without the music back up. Make sure you practice that way too. It will throw you off if you are used to singing with music and then you get there and it's all acapella

I have a request Misti... I have the backing too if you want it. Dunno if you are familiar with Eva Cassidy, but your voice kind of reminds me of hers. Not exactly the same, just similar tones. I would love to hear you do her version of People Get Ready. :D

Junebug I took a listen to your song--you shouldn't worry! You produce a good vibrato and if you can do that you already are singing correctly. I mentioned another possible suggestion in my comment to you. This was very well sung and to perhaps "polish" it up so it's "fool proof" you might consider taking this to a local voice teacher in your area and just going over it with him or her in a couple of visits. This was an EXTREMELY good vocal, but a teacher could give you a few "tips" here and there that while people will not readily appreciate or notice, the judges might be listening for--it just gives you the frosting on the cake. Many coffee shops where the "artistic" crowds gather will often have ads from vocal teachers on their bulletin boards--this is a good place to look. They don't charge a lot, either and it would be just one or two sessions. Hey, anything to improve your chances, right?Good luck!
