Yeah of all the hick Dad's he was the best. Of course, without Don Knotts he would have only been a Dad for about one episode.  Father Knows best was a good one. Haven't seen that show in a about 3000 afternoons.

Likely any male acting a father role in the 40's or 50's in a situation comedy was "The ideal dad"...  That was the trend in those days. "Ideal dad", "Ideal mom"...

I believe it was Marjorie Lord who played the mother on Make Room for Daddy (Danny Thomas) who first made me think that Oedipus had the right idea.
