Then I agree, if a singer is obviously dilly-dallying, then by all means tell them to get their buttski up on stage.

I use 3 cordless mikes.    If I think there may be a problem with so & so not making back from la la land, I'll tell the next one to be ready to go, (mike in hand) if they don't get back in time.... Then I play missing in action's song, next.    Never, ever use filler music or dance songs.     It's karaoke night and by GOD, come hell or high water,  that's what they're going to get.    But never dead air.    They didn't hire me to play dead air, filler music or to act as a...... heaven forbid, DJ.    :dancin:

My bar on a Saturday night has a 12-20 person rotation but there are also about 100-150 peeps that don't sing so I need to cater to them as well. A good chunk of them are friends of the singers and are there to hear the singers, so I don't dilly-dally in getting singers up, but I also play top 40 R&B, rap, pop, and rock filler inbetween, and I pick each song according to how the crowd is reacting, so my show is about 70% karaoke 30% DJ dance.

You may actually try it. The girl that did karaoke in my bar before me used random filler music on a loop at a very low volume and actually had consistently longer karoake rotations than I do, meaning more people were singing, but I ALWAYS have twice as many people in the bar OVERALL because even those that do not sing and don't pay attention to the singers come for the dance music and the large crowd.

Then again, it all depends on the venue :)

I agree no one venue is the same. I think it is just smart giving the crowd what they want. Part of this business is figuring out what works for each venue.

I would stay away from popular dance music for in between songs.  People get upset when they start to dance and you cut off the song...
Since at my venue the non-singers outnumber the singers, I always play well-known singalong party music like "Love Shack", "Sugar Sugar", etc.

Although it's a karaoke show...it's also entertainment. Since sometimes people could take as long as 60 or 90 seconds to make it to the stage, seems that's plenty of time to jam a little.

Whoa, then you need to maybe re-evaluate there.  The longest i've ever had to wait for a singer to hit the stage is about 30 seconds & that's on a high scale.  That's just too long for someone, maybe call who's up & have them in the area & ready (if it's a large venue), otherwise if they are dilly dallying that much, 1,2,3 & call the next singer.  They'll eventually learn!

Lonman, I respect the way you do your show ... every KJ and every venue is different. For my particular venue (a college bar in the University district) I don't think the party music in-between makes the show drag, in fact from what I see it energizes the crowd and contributes to the festivities.

I never want to put myself in the position of being a heavy with rules. I don't think people intentionally "dally" ... my venue is 2 stories and it takes time to come downstairs or sometimes people have gone outside for a smoke. I try to be as friendly and accommodating as possible. :)

Lonman you sound right on the money to me, but we probably work under similiar conditions.
It depends on your venue. What might work for you
might not work for others.
It is partially knowing your regulars too. Things work more smoothly
when you know what to expect. If I know I have a person who is going to take
their sweet time getting to the stage, I do things to try to get them moving sooner.

I really like the sound of the Audio Technica mikes much better than the Shure.  They're warmer or something.  And it's preferred by most of my good singers.   It's 15 year old technology also.     Out of production.    That's why I'm going to the shures.   But I don't want to.
