Ok, time to say something again.

I have been in the business for 9 years DJ and 6 or so KJ. This in my career, i no longer work a day job and I am very serious about my profession. Ford City, PA is about 30 min or less from my home. I service and advertise to an area 120 mile circumferance from my home. Meaning your small town is in my marketing demographic.  Small companies that are fly by night hurt everyone, bars and entertainers. The smaller KJ's have decreased the amount of money us larger companies can charge for a set gig. I'm not multi op totally I do run 2 systems but my second systems only covers my regular bars when I have private functions.

Many bar owners are concerned about price and price only when it comes to quality they rather cancel an idea rather than try some one else. Or they question why do you charge $x when the guy down the road charges $60.

Can I stop someone from going into business? NO this is America, but I can complain about it.

Most all of us started small, most of my starter library was aquired used as I bought out 2 other Karaoke DJ's, sold and traded disc to complete my collection. In the end I got Foundations 1 and 2 and the 5 bricks, and a DK set at a fraction of the cost as well as 350+ SC spotlight disc, many which are discontinued. I aquired a set of pioneer lasers and traded them with another KJ 3 for 1 I got another 150 spotlight disc. I filled in over the past years from ebay. I think when I started buying dics new SC was on around SC8640 since then all of my disc are new and for a good while they were over $30 each.

Karaoke started as a party add on for my DJ business. SC disc became like pokemon cards I had to have them all. I formally started regular bar karaoke in 2002 after a few years of doing parties.

Kightshow is very knowledgable along with many of the other members here. We all can tell you the mistakes we have made when it comes to equipment. It is best to read and do your homework.

In my opnion can one buy a reliable decent starter karaoke system for $1200?

Not really.

Pro Sound card Maya 44 $150
Speakers $250 each
Amp $300 cheap-o
Mixer with FX - $150 or Powerd mixer (they suck) $300
Rack $150 (not really Needed if using a powered mixer)
Effects $100
3 cheap microphones and cables $150
Cables $100
Composite to RF converter and Spliters for multi tv $30
Back up dvd player in case pc goes down $50 or cheap karaoke player $100

Well close, I could put a cheap rig together for $1380+ tax Brand new. I'm sure it wouldn't sound terrible but it could be done.

Do I care to hlep anymore nah, you can figure it out Best of luck to you!

I'm not an A** just don't like competion.

and as far as system cost the biggest cost is music I spend about $300 a month on music. It used to be alot more but since I completed my Sounchoice collection all I buy is the new sound choice spotlight and the pop hits and top hits disc's every month. For the fist 5 years I spent $600 to $800 a month on music.

Karaoke is not cheap, music is always going to have new releases, equipment is always need to be upgraded.

I could have ditto'd most of your post except for this line.  I don't mind competition, competition helps strengthen our own faults or makes us improve the overall image of our own show, what I do mind is low ballers & people doing it "for the love of it" or "for fun" & undermining the entire industry as a whole by "selling out" for free or for beer money & screwing up the legitimacy of the business - this is NOT competition in any sense.  The excuse "well the clubs are small & can't afford much" isn't a valid one, if they are too small to turn a profit by paying for a quality company, then they probably shouldn't be providing entertainment in the first place.  A quality company that charges accordingly will bring the clients in to pay for themselves AND make it worth while for the club to justify the entertainment expense.

The bass responce of the Peavey PR15s is really crappy compared to the PV115s. The PR15 cabs are made of molded plastic and the PV115s are made of wood. Wood just gives a much better THUMP than plastic. Plastic rattles and sounds...well, plastic on the bass, so I personally hate those speakers for that reason alone. Beyond that difference, I would bet the rest of the components of the two speakers are exactly the same. The selling point of the PR15s is that they weigh about half as much as the PV115s. So the basic choice between those two is what is more important to you, light weight or better bass responce!!
