MMMMM...

as for burning disc's....anyone want those cassets i copied from best friends thirty three and a thirds....it was pirating then...but no one seemed to care....that horse has been beat into tiny little pieces...it's not tender ...it's liquid now....

As far as the subject being beaten until it is liquified... That may be the case for you but for Richard & I, KJ's and karaoke store owners, it is a very topical subject. It was very topical when I worked at Camelot music and the fact that the copying was happening was a subject discussed in memos and meetings... They cared.

I am just guessing but I would say some the of sponsors of this very site may feel it is a very topical subject as well.....

If it's done for you, no need to respond to that part of somebody's post... The fact that it's in someone's post means it is very current to them...

all I want to do is sing....and believe it or not I got a pretty good idea which version is best for me....oh and also how high to set the reverb, bass and such....one size dosn't fit all...

I agree you know the version is best for you, what is difficult in karaoke is to be treated as though we are recording studios with the time and inclination to make every setting be the very best for each song for each singer... Keep in mind, we are trying to make sure the experience is pleasant for every one and that our singers get to sing as often as possible. Of course you may be talking about contests which is an entirely different animal and they may have notes on every singer on how to set the system.....

One thing I do have to agree with you on.... Karakoe is a blast!!

Getting off topic but a comment about contests...

I have never made adjustments during a contest except for the music volume. All settings are at default, mic volume and main volume remain the same, adjust the music volume to the same level for each song. Equal for everyone. No enhancements. Either they can sing or they can't.

Hey KKid,,, how is your son???

I have to admit....i didn't used to play peoples discs...it irked me....

Out of curiosity, why did it irk you?

I was new, and i figured...i am paying good money to get songs for people to sing....why bring your own? Would you bring a Mcdonalds Hamb into a Wendys?.....But....i will play originals...no burned. Hey, while this might IRK someone...let's be clear. IT is MY businness...no one elses. I have had no problems since making this statement. They respect me, and I respect them. I put a sheet out out at karaokes, they write down their WISH songs....I try and get them. It works out well, they know i am trying for them.....vica versa. You have to know, i work in the SAME place i have since starting Six years aga, we have a very loyal following. Of course i would try for them. But, everyone has their own opinion on this, and none of them are wrong. It depends on the individual KJ. What works for one, may not work for another. I respect that.

I hear ya... the thing I like when people bring in their own stuff is it may be stuff that is of interest to them only.

A good kj friend of mine that I know in california is into Opera in a BIGGGGG way. Well, duh, most karaoke people aren't . So in cases like his, he can buy his specialty cdg, and I can keep a happy customer.

Burns are another thing entirely. I personally feel that if you're asking me to risk theft (not by the kj, but the venue or it's patrons might not be completely "honest"), scratches, etc... I'd rather bring in a burn.

Actually, the contests that we've done were done pretty much as you stated, we adjusted the music and mic volumn only, which is the same as we do for a "regular" karaoke show.

Thank you asking about my son...He came home on Dec 13th and it was the best Christmas present we ever recieved...He will need physical , occupational and speach therapy for a long time, but it is my belief that he will eventually walk again....

as for the issue regaurding burning discs....all I meant to say is that I don't think they will ever be able to stop it....as for the moral questions involved in this activity, I really don't have any oppinion....

as for the use of special effects....it really depends on the song I'm singing...an example would be some of Ricky Van Shealton's music...when I cover songs like Statue Of A Fool, I like a little more reverb....this is because the orignal had this effect....and i still have problems with the concept of one size fits all....I rarely ask for any changes in sound unless I know the KJ is receptive to my requests...

one time I was singing in a contest.... my wife and I were in duet competion, but decided to warm up seperatly....I ask for the additional reverb for the song I previously mentioned...the KJ, who by the way has proably been in business long than any other KJ around these parts, also the most expensive....anyway he turned it up so high that I sounded like I was singing in a can....some KJs have been known to mess with their sound to make a singer sound worse....I've seen it a few times, not often...

finally, we brought our own disc to this contest....we practice a lot and preform without using the screen....I don't know why, but it just messes me up....we preformed our two contest songs....$500.00 on the line...the crowd loved us.....other contestants congradulated us on our obvious win...but when the results came in we didn't even place....we were told that we sounded too professional....go figure...

I thought that the object was to sound the best and preform the best....

then following that contest most of the contests around here made a rule that you couldn't use your own discs....we were told that we had an unfair atvantage....I think that stupid, because you can buy discs now in almost every department store....

I've rambled on enough....think I'll go practice a little :rotflmao:

the unfair advantage is, you can practice and practice and practice at a specific version.

THEIR unfair advantage is, you have no idea what key the song is in, the tempo, sound etc.

I look at it this way. American Idol and every OTHER kind of contest all use their own music, and you can BET those guys practice until they're sick of the smeggin' music!!!

when someone brings in their own disk (burned or original) I prefer to have them bring the disk up WHEN I call them to sing (I'll deal with a few seconds delay loading up their disk to avoid "handling" their disk badly in their eyes) and then return it as soon as they are done singing... some people could care less and bring up their disks when they bring up their slips- usually you can tell the primadonnas who will freak out if you don't wear latex gloves to handle their stuff and you can tell that "MOST" people are satisfied if you use common sense and normal caution while handling their disks... as a rule of thumb I handle customer disks as if they were my own or how I would want a KJ to handle MY personal disks... usually works out ok for 99% of the people... I will however point out to a customer who hands me a VERY scratched disk the flaws in it BEFORE it goes in the machine so I can avoid accusations that I scratched their beat to hell disk... had it happen once, was enough for me to take the time to inspect the surface as soon as they hand it to me and before they walk away... people who hand me disks that are scratched or skip in my machine get ONE do-over... if it skips again then the music gently fades into background music and they get to sit and wait til their next turn to try a different song... just a little extra thoughts on the matter- tig
