Nope Crystal.. song isn't up yet, but it will be in about 5 minutes :)

First let me say a big thank you to those of you willing to get involved.. this should be a fun project

The first one we are going to have a go at is "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" .. I'm gonna wait a little before doing the other

I am about to post a track that has both the music and a guide vocal.. I decided to do the guide vocal because in past experience, not everyone is familiar with the song and may find themselves in the wrong place. It also helps timing wise with keeping people together on the choruses and duets. And finally, although most of you are terriffic at finding the harmonies, I know there are some who struggle to find one, so this way they can pick one out a little easier..

I divided up the song so that each person has their own little "solo" line.. you by NO means have to sing your line exactly like I did for your solo. You can change a note or do the rhythm a bit different (within reason.. it still has to fit the song lol).

I recorded this guide vocal track so that it is easy to separate the vocals from the music, so that you can have each on a separate track to be able to mute my butt when you are doing your solo line and don't want to hear me lol... I panned the music all the way to one side and the vocals to the other..

In case you don't know how to separate it.. when you open the track in Cool Edit, you highlight only one side of the track and than right click it and select "save to new" after it opens up a new window with just the music (or vocals) you right click that wave and select "send to multitrack" .. If you do that for both the right and left sides, (bottom and top), you will have two separate files in your multitrack.. one of the vocals and one of the music which makes it easy to mute my vocals when you need to.

You can also just open the file up in multitrack, and pan it all the way to the music side when you want to "silence" my vocals. The only problem is that you will only hear the music out of one side and that may bother some people, so that's why I gave the above instructions to separate the two.. If you have any questions let me know :)

Now to the parts.. Here is the lyric sheet with the delegated parts

Yeah You'd better watch out (Miss Milo) You'd better not cry (Smileskim)
You'd better not pout, I'm telling you why (Sheraoke)

he knows if you've been bad or good (Crystal)
So you'd better be good for goodness sake (Shamran)

Oh, you'd better watch out, you'd better not cry (Elisha)
You'd better not pout, I'm telling you why (tonmay)
Santa Claus is coming to town (x's 3) (3 part harmony)

--break-- Santa laughing insanely

Santa claus is coming to town (Miss M & Smileyskim) unison
Santa claus is coming to town (add Sher & Warbler) unison
Santa claus is coming to town (add Tim & Wannabe) unison
Santa claus is coming to town (add Tammy & dyingmoose) unison
Santa claus is coming to town (add MissyG & A New Day) unison
Santa claus is coming to town (add KaraokeMeister & Luly) 2 parts
Santa claus is coming to town (add Heads Together & Dumbdrums) 2 parts
Santa claus is coming to town (add M3Li55A & Crystal) 2 parts

*yea yea yea*
Santa claus is coming to town (ALL 3 part harmony + top female har)
*he's coming to town*
Santa claus is coming to town (all 3 part harmony)
*Old Saint Nick*
Santa claus is coming to town (all 3 part harmony)
*That man is coming to town*
Santa claus is coming to town (all 3 part harmony)

Santa Claus is coming to toooown (all 3 part harmony low - melody - high (no top female harmony)

the ** are an extra part that I added to add some flavor to the end.. i'd like it if a couple of girls would sing that part with me at the end.. you can hear it on the recording.. I going to ask Smileys, Crystal, and Luly because I think you guys would be pretty comfy singing it.. let me know if otherwise

Smiley's and Miss Milo.. as you can see you have a mini duet near the beginning.. i've designated MM to sing the melody and Smiles to sing the upper harmony if that's ok.

No need to rush into recording just yet.. let's wait a day or two to make sure that everyone is happy with this arrangement so that I can make adjustments if necessary...

I'd like if you could each respond in this thread to let me know if you are ok with everything ..

I'd also like to know..

1. when there is two part harmony will you sing the melody or the harmony?

2. when it is three part, will you sing the bottom, melody, or the upper?

I think if you answer these things, we can make sure that it is varied and we don't get an instance of everyone singing the same part..

Girls.. when we have our line at the beginning it is melody and upper harmony (like on the recording)

Guys.. when you have your line at the beginning, it is melody and lower harmony (like on the recording)

At that part right after Santa has his breakdown.. you can see that we start with only two people and ADD two more with every line to build up the intensity.. The first 5 of those are all melody, and than the next three are two part (melody and upper harmony).. than after that, it is three part harmony to the end.. For any couple of ladies at that point you can see that it says you can add the top female harmony which you can hear added on the recording.. it's just the lower harmony up an octave.. I think it adds a nice touch for that part to open up the sound.. If you do sing that one, do NOT sing it on the last line ...it goes back to the plain 3 voice harmony at that point..

Hope I have made everything clear.. Let me know if there are any questions and don't forget to answer those two questions of mine and let me know if you are cool with your parts..

Remember that when you do go to record, only send me the rough vocals.. no music, absoulutely no effects. That will help me a great deal in mixing this sucker lol :)

Sorry i've gone on so much.. I just want to make this as good as it can be and i'm trying to cover all the bases.. thanks you guys!

*** Added *** For those of you who do not know.. in order to save the guide vocal/music file to your computer from SS, you must retrieve it from your temp files. Anything you download gets put in there, so when you open it on SS, that's where it goes. On my computer I go to internet options .. where it says "Temporary Internet Files" , I click on "settings" and than once in there, I click on the button that says "view files".. it opens the temp internet folder where i can see all that i've downloaded. If you arrange the items by their file type, all the ss stuff will be together. Then you can copy the file from there to your hardrive.. hope that helps!

i take it jazzy you want all vocals dry with no added reverb or anything done to the voice is that correct? or do you want us to add what we would normally add to our voices?

btw, jazzy--i didn't plan it this way, but i downloaded the same springsteen version to record myself for the xmas season a couple weeks ago. i'll plan to post it at a time that doesn't conflict with our group effort. thanks for all the time and effort you're putting into this so we can all have a great time with it.

btw, i'm fine w/ it (you asked) and on the harmonies, my voice range probably fits the melodies the best--if you need more folks on harmony though, let me know.

Hi Elisha: That's going to be great fun but also a lot of hard work for you. We are going to try to make it all worthwhile.
??? #1 = harmony

???#2 = lower or upper - No preference

I'll be waiting for the go. Hugs!!

Hey Jazzy....pardon the stupid question.....but do we simply post a reply here in the forum and add the audio file as an attachment....or do we send elsewhere.....and if so....where????

I hope you cleared a few hours for this project!!!

If you dump your temporary files before you listen to song in the showcase it will be the only mp3 and/or the largest file in your temporary internet files. Otherwise if you cache is large and you listen to a lot of submisisons it could take some searching to find it! In case you're wondering it's 4.19MB, and had a name of ss-1224-25_6813.mp3. The size and name should be the same for everyone (or nearly so) but your milage may vary.

BTW, depending on how you submit, if you post to SS you might have to drop the quality of the music channel before you record to fit it under the 3MB limit on the standard account. If you have a standard account and try to submit the 4+MB file it will refuse. If this is a problem, and if anyone is interested, I can set up an FTP site for anyone to drop off their subs if they are having difficulty submitting through the showcase (I could send a link you'd click on and then drag it into your internet explorer window). I don't mind doing this as long as Jazzy doesn't mind (she's in charge of this project!).

Thank you so much to those of you who have read my previous post and answered those questions for me.. The reasoning behind me asking them is to

1. get a response so that i know everyone has seen the post and is ok with everything and

2. so that you guys can see who is doing what as far as harmony/melody, so that you can make up your mind what to do based on how many are doing each

tim.. melody is great .. as you can see you are the first person to say you are doing melody, so that is great

I think I covered just about all the details in my previous post.. but to reiterate:

Quote:
Remember that when you do go to record, only send me the rough vocals.. no music, absoulutely no effects. That will help me a great deal in mixing this sucker lol

so just plain unedited vocals :)

KM there is no need to send me the music panned to one side and your vocals to the other. I have the music, so all I need is your vocals :) Just a simple Mono recording of your plain vocals is preferable!

No need to post your recordings on here. Just send them to my email jazzybaggz@yahoo and if yours is too big for your email account, send via yousendit.com

I'd wish I'd heard from everyone before you guys start recording cuz I'd hate for you to finish you part only for someone to come and say that they are needing me to change something so that you'd have to go back and do it over, but i'll leave it up to you to decide whether to just record it now or not. Hopefully the others will be catching on to this soon..

still have not heard from:

sher
a new day
M3LiSSA
Miss Milo
Tammy
Luly
Heads Together
Smileyskim
Beachheadbum
shamran
allstar

Milo reporting for duty.... I can do harmony parts, either high or low, so just put me in wherever needed (or melody, if you need that).
So looking forward to this!

Unfortunately, I have just learned that neither Allstar or BHB will be able to participate in this group song, but we are lucky enough to get two people who have now asked to join the group projects, so I'd like to welcome aboard Dumbdrums who will be covering allstar's part, and DyingMoose who will be covering BHB's. Great to have you guys!

MissM.. thanks for reporting in :) lol.. I've also heard from Shamran now, so we only have a couple more people who I hope to hear from soon... does anyone know about tammy? I thought I saw somewhere that she was having puter difficulties..

ohh and Sham had a great idea for those of you who are indifferent to whether to sing melody, high, or low harmony. If you would do a couple of different takes on those parts which are harmonized, you could then send me different versions from which i could pick what sounds best and is needed most. So you could send me a track where you do the melody.. a track where you take the high harmony, and a track where you do the low harmony. Than I can get the best possible mix to make sure things are balanced :) Great idea Sham!

Oh, and for the end of the song right after we stop singing (where it plays jingle bells) you can go ahead and talk there. You can say something like.. merry christmas, or good job you guys, or that was fun.. or laugh.. etc etc. I haven't decided if I want to add anything like that or not, but I'd love to have that kinda stuff just in case I think it may work out at the end...

ok enough rambling for this post lol

happy singing :)

Elisha
