Couple things I'm going to throw in here.
1. From nme.com's 100 moments in rock - #65,
"Metal has never been shy when it comes to using shock tactics to thrill a crowd. But the devil himself surely baulked at the prospect of eating small mammals live onstage. Not Ozzy Osbourne. Everyone knew the ex-Black Sabbath singer was something of a loose cannon, but he surpassed himself on January 20, 1982, when, during a gig in Des Moines, a fan threw a bat onstage and Ozzy promptly picked it up and bit its head off. Ozzy thought it was a toy. It wasn't. Legend has it that the bat bit back and Ozzy underwent a course of rabies injections.
This was not Ozzy's first misdemeanour in the beheading department. In May 1981, bored at a record company press conference in Los Angeles, he bit the head off a live white dove. He was later arrested for, among other things, pissing on America's sacred monument The Alamo, and attempting to kill his manager/wife Sharon Arden while deranged on booze and drugs."
2. Last time I checked this is a free country and we are allowed to speak anything we like and to worship as we like. Anything that prevents that is censorship. I don't have to like what you say, I don't have to agree with your religion. Whether you are a professional entertainer or joe schmo up the street it has no impact on what I offer in my song books. If you look back to the 60's you'll find many artists that used both music and speeches to disagree with the government. We still sing many of those songs... anyone have SC's 8472 - Rocky Horror Picture Show? Did you pull 'Sweet Transvestite'? A line from that song "But when you knocked he thought you were the candyman" is a reference to Riff-Raff thinking that Brad and Janey were the Heroin dealer - not to mention the obvious alien sexual implications within the song. BTW, I completely advocate censoring songs for events that request it - ie family/church/children events.
3. We are at war. And while the war in Iraq is a distractor the war on terrorism is alive and real. Those that support the enemy are prevented access to this country. Should we support artists that have joined and/or supported the 'enemy'? This is a personal decision. I like Cat Steven's music and have a few tunes in my book and will likely add more over the next year or so. I don't agree with his politics nor his choices but his music isn't the problem - it's what he does with the procedes from his music sales. Do you really think that my not buying a disc with his songs on it will 'hurt' him? No, but it will hurt my show if it's being requested that I have his songs by the singers there. What he makes off a disc I buy - even if all 15-16 tracks are his songs is negligible - and HAS ALREADY BEEN PAID (licensing is a fee paid up front that includes expected sales numbers - at least according to the sources I checked). We can ask the manufacturers not to make any more discs with the tracks from that artist however to prevent future payments of royalties.
As a technical trainer I was told long ago to avoid the 3 magic topics nearly guaranteed to destroy a class - sex, politics, and religion. Any time any of these topics come up it's likely to bring out opposing viewpoints of people who will not change their mind and even a few that are zealots or extremists. I don't have to agree with your viewpoints, I don't have to like your viewpoints. I served in the US Army for 4 years (uncluding during the first Gulf War - 87-91) because I believe that we have a right to free speech and I want to protect that freedom (among other freedoms). Politically I am Libertarian, religiously I am a Christian, Karaoke-wise I am all-genre.
And yes, more people have died for the cause of religion than in all the wars fought for conquest/land/genocide - including the world wars combined.
BTW, I saw this as a signature from someone on another board a while back "The last time the world was ruled by religion it was called the DARK AGES".
