I wonder if it could've been a poor connection or plug, cable, outlet box at the power source.  Loose plug, poor connection in wall socket, something that caused you to lose juice just based on positioning of cord, or plug, maybe a dirty main pot or fader position, was there poppin too ?  That could be ground... Did you notice if your pilot lights also cut in and out on your amp/mixer when this happened, this would of course mean a connection at the power source, or perhaps ground problem causing amp to go into protection mode ?  Can you determine if it was an intermittent cutting out at a power source ?

I've had dirty contact points in potentiometers, cause crackling cutting out that I thought was a bad jack, or cable.   This has happened to a few guitars of mine,  and although I thought it was my cable or a bad jack (into the guitar or amp, and I was about to replace the 1/4 inch jack on the guitar), the tech told me, that wasn't likely the problem,  he had to open the guitar and spray the potentiometers with chemtronics tuner degreaser, to clean the contacts which were causing total cutting out, and cracking... dirty pots, or contact points, sliders, etc...

Very good points Kappy, but I have eliminated those ideas.

This a weird one and I just love a puzzle.  You say it doesn't affect the music just the mics.  What sort of mixer amp do you have?  How is the music connected?
Tape-in through RCA jacks or into chanels via quarter inch or XLR?  Does the problem occur even if the amp has been on for 20 minutes before you start?
\

Powered mixer amp: Mackie 808M - link above for specs.

Speaker connections: plugged into to poweramp mains out and poweramp monitor out.

Player connections: channels 7 & 8 using RCA jack adapters.

I have not paid much attention to the amount of time the amp is on. I will be more cognizant next time.

I have tried other channels even though it is happening through both mics.

Do you run your monitor in such a way that it would cause a short to your mains though ?    Assuming the monitor was the problem ?  How would the monitor cutting out affect your mains ?   I guess this depends on how you wire these things...

Was there any popping ?  Pop and cutout ?  That could be a sign of grounding problems.  Certain amps will go into protection mode if there are significant ground probs... or there's an overload.  Not sure how you wire your setup..   Have you checked your jacks and speaker cables for bad solder points ?

These are some of the first things I checked. The wierd thing is it only happens on the 1st maybe second song a little. It is not an all night occurance.

Another thing to consider is all my equipment is relatively new. The only damage that I can think of is about a year ago a beer was dropped on the monitor speaker.

This is kinda out in left field but it fits.  If you're using the dynamic mics make sure the phantom power is off.  Next, there is a button on the amp that kills chanels 1-6.  With the amp off click that a bunch of times to clear the contacts.  Turn it back on and see if that cleared things up.

Sorry to say I tried it and it didn't help. Boo Hoo

Now I'm upset. I played switch a roo with the channels, out puts and speakers and am still having the same problems.

I start the first vocals of the night and I have distortion. Then after the 1st song is done it's gone, never to be seen again.

I give up! Unless I get a clue of where the problem is coming from I'm just going to have to put up with it. I don't like the thought of that, but I'm at a loss here.

If you switched the speakers & are still getting the problem, the trouble is in your mixer/amp itself.  Either you can learn to deal with it like you said or send it back to get it fixed.  Don't sond like much more outside of the amp itself can fix it.

Could be the built in compressor is taking time to warm up, before it functions properly......just a thought....... :)

Which again would be a problem with the mixer/amp.  Compressors do not need warm up time.

My 5016 does 15 minutes of stretching, and a couple of laps around the block before it starts a gig...... :)

Unless it's a vaccum tube system, it shouldn't need to warm up - if it does, there is something wrong with it.

Johnny came and helped me Saturday night.
It seems when you hit the break button the speakers make a pop sound. After clicking the break button on and off a bunch the problem with the speakers didn't happen.

That makes sense. Dirty contacts with humidity causes audio pops with startup or vibration.

Babs on my DFX12 a main fader has become intermittent and have sprayed it a few times. I ordered one from Mackie fri When I get it in Ill take some pics and give a short tour on the 'innards' of a compact mixer and how to change parts. I havnt changed a slider pot for a long time but its not as hard as one would think..

I did change the big filters in the power supply in an 808. The hardest part is taking 40 million screws out....

I have a powered mixer amp. No sliders.

It is official though. It seems all I have to do is click on and off the break switch a few times and my speakers don't have a problem.

Any ideas on what I need to do to fix the problem?

Glad to see you got it worked out.

Babs I firget what it looks like on 808 but if its like mine the knob is rectangular.  With a regular pair of pliers carefully pull the knob off. Then take a big straw and place it over the switch arm and tight against the switch then blow on it inshort hard blasts Then spray with tuner cleaner or contact cleaner Then do the straw trick again. Replace the knob Chances are that will do it
