those planes/boats water intakes are really small... the only time a scuba diver could be hurt by them would be when the plane flat out hits 'em! they might get bounced around, but couldn't go in their small water intakes. They do that so they don't swoop up animals, fish etc...

Urban Legend, or fact ?

July 1982: Californian LARRY WALTERS attaches 45 helium-filled weather balloons to a lawn chair in an attempt to realize a childhood obsession. He quickly rises to 16,000 feet and encounters dangerous sub-zero temperatures. Shooting the balloons one at a time with a BB gun, he safely brings himself back to earth.

(This is quite comical,  it takes 3 miles of ascending before he starts to realize it's too cold ?   How about his breathing at such an altitude ?  THis is rediculous, he just happened to have a BB gun with him at the time too ?)

Anyway,  this is what I found.  It's supposedly a true situation.

I guess it's true

I'm still wrestling with the concept that if you drop a penny from the top of the Empire State Building you could kill somebody below with it.  Literature I've read says it's possible but it is always so ambigious, perhaps like it is true and it's a conspiracy to keep the facts away from folks who would actually try doing this.  Any other reports on this?

If you "drop" a penny off that 1200 foot observation deck it won't make it to street level. So given trajectory (it must be thrown outwards to avoid lower extended decks) assuming it even free falls for 6 seconds, doubtful it'd have enough impact force to do much more than bruise a person, EVEN if it falls in a straight path having a chance to accelerate (doubtful); It would likely blow  (glide from updraft) into another building across the street knocking a pigeon off've a planter,  the coins tumbling and surface area properties,  and wind resistance would likely prevent it from coming close to freefall, it'd probably just bruise somebody assuming it hit them at all,  In such a case some older lady would probably find the coin on her pillow the following morning assuming it even got loose from her highly processed  hair-sprayed "foof" which would slow even a Silver Dollar down in a similar manner that a stack of cardboard boxes slows down David Blaine.

Most likely,  If you drop a penny from the empire state building, and it hits some of those ritzy women on the head,  it'll just bounce back up and get wedged in your eye.

Can you imagine being a TWA pilot heading towards LAX at 16,000 feet, and having to radio into the control tower

"I just passed a guy sitting in a lawnchair with a gun"  LOL

If a jetliner got close enough to this nut to spot the gun,  things could've been much worse for him  LOL ..  that could've created some turbulence,  but of course getting snagged by a massive thunderheads updraft could've too.  He had WAY too much confidence in the ability of his bb gun, structure of his "lawnchair",  and made an assumption that his parachute wouldn't have gotten snagged by the balloon chords assuming he couldn't bail out've that chair quickly enough... and that's about as polite as I can be regarding this boneheaded science project.  He seemed to have "issues" anyway,  he "terminated" his existence about ten years later.  He was able to survive stunts such as that,  but even *he* wasn't strong enough to cope with the really tough issues such as women and relationships   LOL

Here's a challenge for those of you that are very good at solving mysteries, and this type fact or fable content.  I'm pretty resourceful when it comes to trying to research some of these topics HOWEVER,  this one is VERY tough if not impossible to research in terms of whether or not it's fact or fiction.  Not even sure if a phone call to Lamontville SA would disclose whether this was fact.  All stories on the internet regarding this bizarre eposide come to a similar conclusion, "It seems as though this did happen", just the age of the boy differs according to report. Other stories say it's a distortion or just a story made up due to kidnappings in that area for ritualistic purposes.  Not sure..  This seems to come to a dead end despite how much research one does.  "Might be true" is the likely answer.  BIZARRE IMO.  Although now-adays attitudes regarding wildlife are changing.  The Mountain lion killing and starting to eat the Biker in California a few years back, The elderly couple that went to visit their pet chimp "moe" a few years back, and the guy got mauled by other Chimps...  Shark attacks, pet snake fatalities here in the states, etc.  It's logical this happened BUT strange..

Snake comes out've hibernation, and decides to have a "snack"

Here's a slightly different spin on "Lawnchair Pilot".  I suppose he didn't shoot the balloons successfully.  He had to be rescued by a copter.

http://www.delta-9.com/net47/myth/balloon.html

BUT according to other stories the helicopter rescue wasn't true, and it supposedly wasn't LAX airport either   LOL .  So, the story although true, ranges from 10,000 feet, to 16,000 feet, rescue stories change somewhat, and where he purchased the balloons also vary in accordance with which story you read..
