i put a montor on the stage, but it's only there for appearances. if the singer thinks there's a monitor, they somehow feel better. in order to hear it though, you have to get down on one knee and lean into it. the venue is too small to use it, or i get horrible feedback. i mainly use it to talk to the singer before a song so i don't have to yell across the bar. i set up at the back so i can hear everything and set the mix better.

Most places I go to, there's really no choice about whether or not to have a stage. There isn't enough room. Those that are big enough usually have, if not a stage, at least an easily identifiable area where only the singer is supposed to be.
At some places the patrons have to walk between the monitor and the singer in order to get to the bathroom. It doesn't promote great performances, that's for sure.
What I'd really like is not so much a stage but large wall-mounted (or hanging from the ceiling) monitors to the singers center-left and center-right, so the singer could move their eyes around the crowd while still being able to see the words. Even better would be teleprompters. And while I'm at it, I'd like a million dollars.

OH SO TRUE.
MOre than not, you can convince someone of something with a little smoke and mirrors.
One of my competiors has a brochure showing his FULL setup, and I have seen his FULL setup once. Turns out he has 8 speaker cabs setup, but only actually 1/2 of them work. The other 4, if you look closely, are EMPTY. But it does make for a cool look.

I finally found some time to come back to SS...at least for a few minutes anyway! Life has been really busy for me. Wow! I would not want to perform without a stage. I am really fortunate, even though most of what I do is with a live band, to always have a stage big enough to set up a band (consists of pedal steel guitar, fiddle player, 2 guitar players, bass player, keyboard player, and me.) I can say that one of the best places in town for karaoke has always had a nice stage with light effects and a great sound system. The tv monitors are hung above the singer at the front of the stage suspended from the ceiling. They use 15 inch mains (not sure what brand) and 20 inch powered subs (not sure of the brand of these either). Their show runs every night of the week except Sunday night and always has around 300 people there for the entertainment. I have been in there a few times when I had a night off and really enjoyed it. They run two 15 inch monitors suspended from the ceiling, placed on each side of the tv monitor. Then there are tv monitors placed around the room on every wall that show the lyrics to the songs. It is an incredible set up for karaoke. The kj has his booth set up right beside the stage up front so he can monitor everything plus interact with the crowd. The other place I have been to is much the same type of crowd and set up, suspended monitors and everything. The only difference is that the kj's consist of radio dj's from our leading country music station in the area. They constantly draw 3 to 400 people each night of the week. Great to see everyone again!--Mike

I don't use a stage even if the bar has one.
Pool tables and karaoke don't mix. All you need is for a singer to bump into someone making a shot and the world is going to end. Anytime I had to play at a bar with a pool table, if it was anywhere near, I make them close it down. Too many fights and too much noise around a pool table. (They aren't making that much money on a pool table to be worth the aggravation it could cause.) I have a bar/ pool hall that wants me to play there. There is no way in He*L, I'm going to do that gig. If you want a pool hall, that's what you got. I foresee nothing but trouble in a setting like that.

Hi Mike!! Nice to see you ... and Happy Holidays!
We work a club with a very nice stage! The singers LOVE it .... and it really does emphasize that "4 minutes of fame" thing that all karaoke singers love... with people ACTUALLY looking up at them.
I agree with ya Big Dog about karaoke and pool not mixing. If the club we are asked to play in has a pool table ....... its known right off the bat that we will be NO WHERE near the table.
We always suggest that the room's focus be "karaoke only" .... but sometimes the bar owners don't wanna turn away the 'regulars' .... who play a lot of pool. AND... for some karaoke singers, they say it helps pass the time between rotations.
Still ..... NO POOL TABLE is definately the preferred way to go, IMHO.

Hi CCindy! It is great to see you again too! Pool tables are not good to have around when you have your band playing either! I think the tables ought to be placed in an area completely away from any stage so the shows are not interrupted. --Mike

Thank you CCindy, I have not had any time to record in the last month, but I have been doing shows every weekend and teaching school every day. In the middle of that, trying to help my mother straighten out all the paperwork associated with my dad's passing, you know, the insurance claims, social security stuff, and changes to his retirement plan that will affect my mom. It has been quite a struggle since I have never had to do anything like this before. At any rate, things are looking up and I am happy to be back here for a little while. I hope to do some recording real soon and sub something new for a change.--Mike

Has anyone ever used or experienced the Galaxy personal monitors http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=601401 or similar products. I am thinking of incorporating this package into my show with the master as my personal monitor(as I normally have to setup beside the performing area) and the slaves for the singers. Positioning these to the side, pointed at the singers,on mic stands would seem to solve the monitor/space issue. Any experienced comments or comparable suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The venue I am currently playing in is ridiculously small- I have a 4' X 4' area to set up in. I found a great folding table that is 2' wide and 4' long, with telescoping legs that make it 3.5' high. I have started keeping the monitor under it and have found the singers still hear it fine, and I get less feedback. It makes use of empty space!
