A friend gave me a program not long after that was helpful, but I didn't even have Norton or McAfee or anything... I had let my subsription run out. (smart move, huh?) I now have a full program running that pretty much catches anything.
Still... I wont use those P2P places.
For one, my kids liked to get stuff there. And ANY word you use to search for something, pulls up all kinds of porn stuff. I once typed "fiddle loop"..... I was gonna get a bunch of loops and play around with composing a track. Uh, WRONG phrase to type in Kazaa. LMAO

from a post on another site:
Quote: BPI gets go-ahead to sue MP3 site The British recording industry has been given permission to sue Russian music website allofmp3 . com in the High Court. Members of the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) want to prove the site, which offers downloads for as little as five pence, is illegal.
They were given the go-ahead to sue the company last week, and say proceedings will be issued in Russia this week.
The operators of allofmp3 deny the recording industry's claims that their site is not licensed to sell music.

I stopped using Kazaa, Kazaalite, Limewire, the whole works, because they were the main sites that were allowing child pornography to be shared. I wrote to the folks at Kazaa in regards to this and their reply was since they were based out of Amsterdam and child pornography was not considered to be a serious crime, that they didn't have the time or the resources to check all accounts. Had the dumba$$ that told me that bothered to read the cc: portion of the email, he/she would have seen that a copy had also been sent to the FBI and Interpol, and yes action was taken against them. I'm not saying that I was the person who made the changes happen, but I'm sure, or at least I hope that I was not the only person complaining. So because of that one thing alone, spyware or not, legal or illegal, I say F**K Kazaa and Limewire.

I used to go to a message board called Sam's Hole. (SAM were the initials of the screen names of the 3 moderators; I guess "hole" was just like "a little hole in the wall" or something.) Well, once I couldn't find the URL and I didn't have it bookmarked, so I did a Google search for "sam's hole" and you would not believe the stuff that popped up. (Everything, that is, _except_ the website I was looking for.) I didn't go in and read all the sites, but I read enough on the Google page to know what they were.

While I can not suggest such activity.
Take a look at EMule, it doesn't have the notorious virus, and spyware problems of limewire and Kazza.

I've been using Limewire for well over a year now, and I can't say I have ever had any probs with viruses, but there is certainly some spyware to be had......Of course it's illegal, but I think the focus is put mainly on those who are sharing 1000's of files on the network, if you download a song or two here and there, I doubt you have anything to worry about.

It is obvious share programs are rampid. It is a catch me if can attitude.
With so many people doing it I don't think it will stop anytime soon. One way they could cut down on it is to make it more affordable. Have you checked out how much they are charging a song now a days, gosh. :O

Oooops! I allowed my daughter to download the free version of Limewire because she tried to convince me that all of her friends use this without incident. I had no idea file-sharing was illegal. I even use this to listen to an original song before trying to karaoke a song. It seemed too good to be true to me.
One thing I don't get is how can it be considered illegal when the quality of the recording is not really that of an original cd's music? Some of these files are as low as 96k to 128k in size. Isn't an original recording somewhere in the range of 256k? Not sure myself.
I have noticed alot of questionable files and descriptions on this Limewire place...somewhat confirming what James had mentioned about file integrity. I just thought some stupid kids write idiotic stuff to be a nuisance...never clicked on anything questionable, I just need to hear the music. Now, I don't believe it's such a good idea. I don't make a very good pirate....ARRRRRGH!!

As James said, they do allow alot of porno being transmitted. And I paid a visit to our main computer place the other day and asked them about Limwire. Their first question was, "Tell me you didn't put it on your computer?" The past three months most of their virus recovering work has been the result of Limewire.
