Last statistics I read or heard, 4 out of 5 adults(USA) do not smoke.
You should see how many KARAOKERs smoke vs those that don't. In my experience, it's easily 70% smokers!

I agree, it might even be higher than that......I've also noticed that many of the best singers smoke........maybe I need to start smoking....lol.....it also seems if you go out to karaoke, and you don't smoke......you end up smoking second hand anyway........I wake up in the morning, and feel like I need a ciggarette, but alas, I have none......I think rather than a ban, we need choice.......but once again I must say.....it's not if they will ban it, it's only a matter of time..... :(

The ones that I know that quit smoking also quit drinking as well as they would only smoke while they drank hence don't go into the bars just because they can't drink anymore & don't want to be tempted.

I remember a South Park episode where Stan tells his dad, if you have an alcohol problem, and you completely avoid alcohol, you still have the problem, and you have solved nothing. Learning how to control your intake of alcohol, and not letting it control you is what needs to be mastered.
I have no addictions, though I was addicted to sex at one time, but after about ten years of marriage, I was cured... :(

I would say 80% of my clientel smoke. I think this is the main reason
I am concerned. To me smoking and drinking go hand in hand. My 3 times a week
regulars are mostly heavy drinkers and all smoke. Yikes!

LMAO I guess I'm an upper kind of gal. I smoke and drink coffee.
Caffeine is my drug of choice. I'm drinking an ice coffee right now.

I always wonder why people are so surprised I don't drink, especially when I am working.

I want to make the following general statements.   They are not directed at anyone in particular.    No offense is meant.      None should be taken.   None of this is a joke.   I'm being dead serious about this.      I live it and practice it.

Dolly Parton said it best.   As an entertainer, you need to appear larger than life.    Both of her's do.   LMAO     The way people see you is very important.

Lets' examine a few things that directly relate to the karaoke business and crowd retention.    This is for KJs not karaoke singers.    I always tell the singers, sing what you want.   I'll keep them entertained with what I sing.   LMAO

The way you look to the crowd age wise, will determine the majority age group of the crowd.    If you look like a geezer, you'll attract geezers.    Why do the entertainers all dye their hair?   Guess who went premature gray? (Started going when I was 21)      Guess who dyes their hair.   Not because I wanted to.      I do it to get and keep jobs.    Nobody wants to hire a geezer.    Why do they all get face lifts?     Why do they all have suntans?    How about fake boobs, lip jobs, etc.     Why do they wear designer clothes?     Why do they live in Hollywood?     Why don't they hang around with you?

The type of music you play, directly determines the type, size and age of the crowd.
If you play and sing geezer music, you'll attract geezers.     If you sing a lot of  country music, the crowds get restless.     I'm glad I don't have too many country singers at any given job.   The ones that I do have are plenty.    That is why I never sing country songs at most places.     I do have one heavier country bar.    I'm glad I don't have too many people singing the slow older boring songs.    Remember me saying whenever I sing, 99% of the time I sing up beat rock songs.    I know what to sing and what not to sing.     I sing them because I have to, not because I want to.

The above mentioned suggestions do not mean that anyone is a bad KJ.   It just means that you better look at yourself objectively.    Looking and sounding younger will never hurt you.   Looking old will.    You gotta look and sound "with it."    Not out of it.     I said it before, I do not cater toward a headbanging, hip hop younger crowd.      I know some of those songs.    I'm cool.    I will sing them if I have a group of people in that age group.     I know 600 songs.      There is a reason.    Any guesses?    I sing music geared to the majority of the crowd.   But I also sing to keep everyone interested.     Does that make sense?     If you just want to sing 50 year old songs.   You're killing the crowd with every note.     You can watch them leaving.     I see it when certain people start singing certain songs.   That is why I inject a song.    UP tempo rock song.    You'll never go wrong with a rock song.     Not something boring.   Just taking and playing peoples requests is not entertaining the crowd.     Singing what you want to sing, instead of what you need to sing, is the problem.

Maybe the size of the karaoke crowds has nothing to do with playing all karaoke and why you should start to play dance music.      You just mentioned a few good reasons.   Drunk driving laws.   Nothing to do with pure karaoke.     Higher gasoline prices effecting peoples ability to afford to go out as often.   Nothing to do with pure karaoke.    Back to school.    Vacations, graduations etc.  Nothing to do with pure karaoke.    Nothing to do with a younger KJ playing dance music.

Killing them with boring, I have to be in bed at 9 O'clock music is doing it. :asleep:
If the singers are singing country music, it's too much for my liking and for my crowd.     Watch their reaction.    It's the last thing I will ever think about singing for a mixed age-group crowd.   And It won't be a slow love song.   They usually sing enough of those too.     Read my lips..... up beat rock.     Learn some.    I won't get a face lift, maybe, but I'll always dye what's left of my hair. LMAO     I hardly ever sing country music unless it's UP beat and never slow loves songs.     Never sing old nobody remembers classic country, either.   :asleep:

Take some young advice or see ya in the old unemployement line.

Do you understand my post?    She is as good of an example as you will ever see next to Phyllis Diller.   LMAO    She had so many lifts.  The bottom of her feet was her face.   LMAO    Anymore and she would be walking backwards.  LMAO

It's all about how the public sees you.   I'm sure she didn't want to have all of those operations.   She did it to keep working.    Young babes look more hireable than the older ones.    Not me saying it.   It's show business.   That's what you are in.   Get with it or get passed by.

Look young, sing young, work more.  :O  :D    Has nothing to do with dance music.     Work the crowd.     Don't let it work you.

LMAO BD Now you are telling us we need to have face lifts?  LMAO

The visial on this one is to much - pass out the toupees and sunless tanning lotion.

When I go out to do karaoke it is nice to see a hansom Karaoke Host, but I would much rather see a host with personality than looks. I'm not going home with the guy.  LMAO Personality is key in my opinion. As far as staying hip - yeah you need to know what's hot or not "IN MUSIC AND KARAOKE". Be charming and funny that's the key. Act like your trying to be 18 when your 60 is not cool to me.

I don't go to shows because of what the host looks like or sings.  I go to a show primaraily for the sound system first.  If it sounds good that is my first criteria.  I bring my own music so selection isn't a big factor anymore, however, if they have a large book, I will look through it.  I have many friends at the clubs I go to aged from 21 - 61.  The one thing in common & binds people is the karaoke factor & it seems that even with different types of music (the places I go everything gets sung), that everyone can appreciate others performances even if it's not their style, or even when they are bad, but having fun.  Types of shows I avoid (and this isn't directed toward any one individual so take no offense) are shows where the host believes they are there to entertain everyone, you aren't, you are there to get the singers up & fill in dead spots with yourself if necessary.  Every time a host sings, especially on busy nights, is another spot taken away from a paying customer.  Sing 4 times, that 4 less singers.

I'm telling you what goes on with famous entertainers.   One of the reasons they become "has-beens" is they get to old to sell movies anymore.    Nobody wants to see a wrinkled has-been.

If you are the host and sing "has-been" music at karaoke without taking into account the age group of the nonsingers and what their musical tastes are, that will keep them there and entertained, then you will lose your job.    NOT BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T PLAY DANCE MUSIC...  KEEPING everyone entertained, remember.    Everyone.    The singers are entertaining themselves and 99% of the time they could care less about the nonsingers.      I directed this at the HOSTS not the singers.     The topic was about being replaced by a younger KJ.    The gist of it was because he played dance music geared to the younger crowd.   I don't beleive it has a single thing to do with his selection of dance music.   Don't pick out parts of a post to blow out of proportion.  Take in the entire context.

Entertainers which you are one, need to be perceived as being "withit."   MUSICALLY and agewise.    That also means entertaining everyone.      Prejudice of all kinds, is still alive and well.    Young kids look at geezers as geezers if they are singing "OLDIE OLDIES."  :asleep: BORING.    This is stuff that 99% of them do not want to hear and will not stick around for.    You decide.  Do you want to BORE them to the death of your company?     I know what type of music I'll continue to use to entertain my crowds.    If you want to look, act and sing like a geezer, because that's what you want to sing and not care about the musical needs of the nonsinging crowd, look for a different line of work.     DJ-o-ke won't even save you.
