Jian,  any DVD player would have the capability of playing CD-G format correct ?  How about CD players ?  Are there some older models out that can not, even with correct plug-ins ?

As I recall, this was not originally true, although nowadays it may be for the most part. Only certain dvd players and cd players will play cdg. I believe with Windows XP you also have to have aspi.dll installed.

I have a Dart Cdg Player that is currently working to play cdg's directly from the disk on my computer using the dvd drives.

In the past when I just had a cd player I used free Tricerasoft Cd+g Disc Player http://www.tricerasoft.com/karaoke_soft ... loads.html. So far this doesn't seem to work with my dvd drives though. I'm sure there is a free player out there that will work with Dvd.

Power cd+g will work with cd players - not sure if it will work with dvd players.

Oh I have another question how many of you just use backing tracks ( just music no words on screen ) to record? I find it very hard to keep with timing like this.

I see that your intention is to record. If that is the case then just rip the backing music to your HD or direct to the software; which ever is possible. You will get only the music.
If you cannot rip then just play it with winamp and record it.
Then using the karaoke machine play the song. with the mic connected to the pc. Sing and record your singing.
This way you will then have two tracks; track one is the backing music and track two is your vox. Sync the 2 tracks and mix.
