Thank you, eben, for a clear explanation!

Thank you, Jian, for the software links!

Thank you, djkyle, for expanding my list of mic choices!
Price is a major consideration but also want best quality/price
Will pay a little more for best quality option.

Here's another Samson mic I just discovered.  It is their dynamic USB mic and it's only $49.  It looks pretty good by description but I have no first hand knowledge to show that it is good.

There is one more thing you will need when recording with a pc; a set of headphone. You need it to hear the backing music and monitoring your singing. It is not a good idea to monitor your singing while recordiing yourself thru the speakers.

Thanks, Odie
This maybe a better price point for me.  Been diving into tech threads enough to figure out I also need music CDG.  Thanks to Jian, I also know I need headphones.  I just may have to be a test-user in the lower price ranges and this looks like a good option.

Thanks for the heads up, Jian!
I know I'm going to be asking more questions in the tech forum.  Hope I see you there.

For a long time I just used the cheesy plastic mic that came with the computer...didn't sound bad at all actually but was easy to pop P's on...I just put a thin layer of paper towel over it....crude, but workable....

I don't claim to really know anything about this, but I must say that I've really enjoyed my Shure SM58 thus far.  It's old and a little beat up, but I think it still gives a pretty darn good sound for recording even though it's more of a live performance mic.  That's not to say that I wouldn't LOVE to get my hands on a large diaphragm condenser mic, but they are a bit expensive and I don't know if it would be too sensitive and pick up too much noise since I don't have a soundproof booth.  I know there's a Rhode model.. (NT1?) that everyone says is great and not too expensive that i'm looking at getting.  In the meantime, my Shure with my pantyhose and clothes hanger pop stopper is doing the trick :)

like $70 range. For the rest of the $30, I would pick up mic holder for C01U. It's spring loaded holder that let's the mic float so you won't get noise from bumping etc.

That doesn't appear to normally be a 70 dollar microphone however.  Is it just an excellent multipurpose computer microphone that will serve a purpose of music, even mic'ing acoustic guitar work, room acoustics over a computer, and all in all is much better into a computer than an SM series shure ?   Just curious..  Just patch it directly into the USB port, and that's it ?
