after my wireless router found at least two neighbors systems, I decided against wireless. In an apt or condo setting, when living within close proximity to neighbors, I prefer not having wireless.

I got my hopes up thinking there was a wireless modem. My router is using MAC and WEP. I love when users don't change their admin password too.

you are correct that wireless routers are firewalled and the information is encrypted out of the package (usually). what i am saying is that just because a router has a firewall, doesn't mean it can't be hacked fairly easily. i'm not talking about protecting the outgoing information from the computers inside the house. i'm talking about someone pulling up in front of your house, logging into your router and accessing your computers.
even when the log/pass is changed, it can be accessed given a little time. the minimal effect of not changing the log/pass is that a neighbor can use your wireless router to access the net. the major effects have far greater consequences.
as for who would want to hack your computer..........
do you pay bils online?
do you keep the links to the accounts you pay online in your favorites?
is the information for each of those accounts stored on your computer (cookies)?
those are just a few of the things that the sharper criminal minds are doing these days to steal your identity. i use an onboard computer system everyday in my truck. almost ever time i pulll up to a house to print out a service ticket or some other routine task, i have at least one (usually three or four) choices of wireless networks from which to choose. while i cannot access all of them, there are a few a day that are wide open for my use (should i choose to, but i don't)
a side note to this--------
if you have a security camera system, like a wireless nanny cam or anything like that, it can also be tapped from the outside. this allows would be burglars or worse to get a peek inside your house to see if there's anything worth stealing or worse yet, raping.

I choose not to live a paranoid life, personally.
But, hey.. that's me;)
And, if someone wants to sit in my front yard, and try to "hack" into my computer... go for it... but, you would have to be pretty bored to WANT to do it... imo. (I mean, when i "hack" into people's networks, i do it from the comfort of my own home:)
I only JUST got my father to go online, because he was afraid of "hackers"... you all watch TOO much tv, imo.
I am checking right now, and I have access to 8 different wireless networks, RIGHT now. But i live VERY close to a LOT of neighbors (on a military base), and have already warned those who are completely open... come on, admin/admin is easy to guess:)
And, people actually have them named things that are recognizable to me, as a neighbor... "peters", "Smiths", etc etc...."living room", that one is a little harder to figure out who it belongs to, i have to admit.
ahhh, never mind.
Anyways.. get a wireless router, don't be paranoid. They are convienent, and you can go online with your laptop in the bathroom. I love to chat while I am having a dump:)

Me either, btw did I ever mention I'm an exhibitionist
Seriously, general band scanners pick up lower frequency cordless phone conversations around here. People get each others mail by accident (so it appears), Phone sex around this place usually just means leaving a 900 mhz, or 2.8 gig phone on speaker phone at night, and hearing your neighbors having about as amorous a sexlife as you. While some things are likely protected, I like to know SOME things are at least semi-private. People use their computers for numerous things.. I just feel more secure running cables from room to room LOL

I used to sit at my husband's old work place, when he was working late, and listen in on cell phone conversations. It was fun:)
People were giving out credit card numbers, and phone numbers/addresses, etc... oooh, the power....
Another thing I used to do when i was young, was program two way radios for drive thru freq...... and then, go scare the mcdonald workers sh!tless, and screw up orders. Why you ask? Because I could. So there;)

Exactly Gilly. People just don't use their heads ! Banking info, CC info, private stuff SHOULD NOT be broadcasted from just any wireless phone. While I don't know much about this stuff, there are a few common sense things people should know prior to being left unattended on the internet too.. It's bad enough that two restaurants around here were busted for having CC copying devices.. Waiters were stealing info from customers.. It wasn't an easy bust however. ALOT got ripped off. they had small machines they kept in their pocket.

The biggest fun Ive had with woireless is using windows media encoder.
WME
It is simple to broadcast music on windows media player and receive wireless by just putting url in player.
Business owners can monitor their security cameras at their business by cell phone almost any where ....
Has anybody broadcast their show via the internet? Wouldnt be hard.....
A thought just struck me!!!! Live SS....Think about it....

None of my current computers even HAVE modems anymore. No use...
EXCEPT, it was a pain, when we lost our service for a week after a huge storm, last month, and I couldn't even use dial up to check emails, etc......
OOops, babbling.
Ok, babs;) Good luck with your purchase. They are easy to set up, and like I said, completely plug and play... UNLESS you need to change settings, etc. I have it so only my four computers are allowed to connect, and no one else can, or, if you need to open ports to receive files on msn, etc... a lot of routers come with certain programs settings already built, and you don't have to list them yourself. I do a lot of torrent dling, and have to open dif. ones to send and receive, etc etc.
ok, babbling AGAIN.
I need a coffee.. i ran out, and I haven't had the car for a WEEK.....

Tim Horton's is spilling over into the US. I was in Detroit a few months back and went to a Tim Horton's. Not too shabby.
