Quote: Only 3 minutes!! Surprise
Ive gone to shows out of town I dont always go up and introduce myself to the host.. If it is a good show I'll just play dumb and sit back and observe....But as soon as I pick up the mic all realize I'm not the average singer but I wont try to take over I just contribute
I have been to shows where I had the urge to take over and get things rolling but that is one of my pet peeves is someone that does that. I do have to go a great distance like down to Denver to run into a KJ I dont know. Everybody knows everybody around here..

Anybody that gets on a mike an starts announcing their shows, is a jerk. But then again it makes me laugh, because they must need the work. If I went to your show and you didn't know me, I wouldn't say a word about me being a KJ. That's how much I don't care. I don't have to stoop to stupid cheap shots. Like using my own song slips. Or (accidentally) dropping my business cards. I guess I should have been impressed with their 40,000 songs. Saturday night and guess where they are? Getting the picture? LMAO

I will tell a kj that I run my own company. You can usually tell someone that's been in the scene for a long time... they know certain songs by number on the discs, want y ou to take something down two, bring up the vocals a bit, and to lower the music, etc...
Personally, I find folks that get demanding like that a pain in the buttsky! !
I met Lonnie and Tig that way... I'm happy to go check out another show... and very much happy to discover that they have an excellent sound system, well uupdated books, will take customer cdgs (forget Salinas! !)...
But I don't expect (and even refuse preferred treatment. When I'm at another's show, I'm merely a customer with an "interest" in how things are running.
It's my greatest wish to just raise the bar a little... to make every show better. When my ex partner Dave and I went to a competitor's show (one I eventually had a blow out with - muzikmann in Tigard, OR), the guy had his RF Modulator set on the default setting, which in this case was for the European frequency... I noticed that he had no yellows on his discs as they were highlighting. The Music Maestro discs especially used white words with yellow highlighting. Anyway, you couldn't hardly see the changes.
The kj explained that the MM discs were the worst when it came to highlighting when I mentioned it to him. I told him his switch on the RF Mod was wrong. He said there wasn't a switch. I told him there indeed WAS, and that it was wrong. Eventually, he decided to crawl under his table, with his gal looking at the words. I heard the "snick" of the switch being switched, and his gal gasped aloud. He came up from the table to see bright yellow highlighting that he swore wasn't there, and looked at me in quite a bit of shock.
He wanted to buy me a drink, and I told him that I was just happy to spread the word a bit. In reality, I got all the satisfaction I needed seeing him taken down a notch in the smuggness category! Sadly, it didn't last with him! !
That started out a conversation and semi-friendship that lasted abit. I took Tig there, and for the first couple of shows, we had a great time.
Untill a bit later... but that's another story! !

I think it's cool to have DJs and KJs introduce them-selves. But to me, not the audiance. That's up to me if I so choose. There's a few JKs I have met on here that I would probably intruduce as the visiting competition. But not till I know somethiong about that person. ( I promote you, You promote me.. ) If your show is not very good, then I would not recomend doing that.. Competition is ALWAYS good for the business, IF you learn from it. Yes, there are some venues where it is useless to try to compeat as the club don't care about quality, just cost. But out side of that it's important to have. Any really sucessfull businsman will tell you that. That's why companies start a competition business them selves if there is non. Such as Pontiac and Chev. Same company, but they still compeat for your business if there are no other companies close enough to compeat with. Works with any business. BUT, you do need to make sure your own business is up for the competition first.

Another hint is they walk up dont say a word and start staring at the rack....Then they look at the bottom 2 units which is a black panel with nothing on it. Whats that? Then Ill chuckle... its the computer WOW Then I give them a tour And we pick each others minds. Last year a big band was settiing up I walked to the guy seeting up the FOH mixer. He looked at me and asked"You a soundman?" I laughed "Sometimes"...I picked his mind.. I remember when if you said karaoke they had no respect But nowadays with the sophisticated karaoke systems around it is different.

We will often introduce ourselves as KJ's to the KJ only. We don't expect favors or an introduction, we just share a common business/interest/addiction.... I do watch how they do their rotation, filler music, dance sets, etc., etc., and enjoy the fact that how they do it works great for them, even if it wouldn't for us....
We don't get to many shows besides our own or those of our KJ's but when we travel I like to hit the local karaoke show. As a matter of fact we met knightshow and another KJ from another forum over the Memorial Day weekend. We enjoyed meeting them and the show and tried to be the kind of singer we want at our shows...
I will use my slips if I am turning in my own disc (provided the KJ allows that, if not, no biggie, I'll find something) or if I can't immediately locate slips at the venue. I do not leave them laying around or show them to anybody. Most likely, if I'm at a karaoke show I am there to let loose and be a singer for the night, not a KJ....

Agreed Susy Another rule I have If I go to a place thats having a contest unless its plumb out of state I wont enter. Usually the Kj will want me to sing one song to get it going Ive had judges say you should be in the contest. I say no Im in this business I cant be competing with my customers!!!
also I always tell the host goodbye when we leave shake their hand or hug and tell them good job!!! Its nice to walk back into a place where you dont go much and people look up with a big grin on their face..... Its a camradre thats unique in its own right.

I don't compete in contests, I'm not a talented singer, just a karaoke addict!
We let the host know when we're leaving also and it IS nice to walk back into a place and be greeted by a smile! We try to do that with our patrons as well....
Karaoke comrade,
Susie

That is unbelievable! You can not be serious. I probably would be chasing the jerk down. I have heard of some strange things from KJ's that want to steal a job, but I can't even imagine someone being that obnoxious.
