Before going to karaoke full time (woo hoo!) I spent 8 years in the army hauling explosives around Europe, 3 more hauling steel around the midwest and then about 5 years teaching high school English. I got laid off during budget cuts and decided to turn my hobby into a career and here I am.
Maybe I should try to teach maninblack how to edit and condense...

You are perfectly welcome to critiicize my poor sentence structure skills. Also my inability to recall correct usage of punctuation. In fact, I'd appreciate it. It's amazing how poor English comp skills become, when a person's been out of school for many years. I'm also very curious as to how certain theories have changed over the course of the past 40 years regarding English comp. IE, Starting a sentence with "And", "Because", Etc
(I was constantly corrected in an AOL Philosophy room I belonged to. One member was a High School English teacher. It REALLY helped me. Unlike many other's who'd respond to her with snyde remarks such as, "Thanks Mommy". I was quite appreciative. How we express ourselves in this type venue is seen by others, and used to "judge" much of the time.)
I abuse comma's, and apostrophes. Should I have placed an apostrophe after the E in the word "apostrophe" ? or was I correct ?

Hey no doubt. Let's see I could've just said:
Worked as a Management Adivsor for several Fortune 100 companies, retired, decided to draw my disability. Now I split my time between community work and karaoke.
Yep, there ya go, condensed and edited, but not near as much fun to imagine what other people think when they read it.
Actually I do write, it's only because of the internet that I've learned such poor grammer skills, but in my own personal work, it's worked over and over til it's 100%

Aside from that I've been doing odd jobs. When an odd person says odd jobs that's pretty odd. I need to find another day job soon, I think I've got this illness down to manageable now.

PERSONAL COMMENTARY ON THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH
Regarding the teaching of English in today's schools, even at the collegiate level the emphasis is placed on LITERATURE rather than COMPOSITION. Despite being in a double major program for English and Education, out of all credits required for graduation only ONE MEASLY SEMESTER was spent on grammar and usage!
Being a non traditional student, I had received a pretty good background in grammar and usage in HS (old school as it were) but most of my fellow students had not. Once again, I emphasize that these people were in college to become English teachers! You would not believe some of the things I read from classmates.
So when you wonder why the kids coming out of high school can't write effectively or their grammar is all out of whack (as opposed to being IN whack?) it's because their teachers don't know grammar either!

Used to work at a tennis courts, and teach it on occasion, during the early- mid 90's.
Since '94 I've, for the most part, been a full-time K.J. It's pretty much the one job I've truely loved, and the bills have gotten paid.... barely .

In "REAL LIFE" or "WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?":
For a living: Field Service Technician for a digital reprographics corporation(in other words I fix digital copy machine systems, fax, printers as a Field Tech)--It pays the bills, has lots of training opportunities(presently working on A+ OS certification) and comes with a pretty decent medical and dental plan and 401K.
Weekends and evenings-writer/photographer for 3 Karoake Magazines, and a blues publication. Do stories on and photograph concerts, festivals, bands, shows, Karaoke and all kinds of assignments.
Have a small part-time photography business on the side(Mostly bands, entertainers, some models also): www.geocities.com/kjfotog
Photographer (Pacific Northwest for www.DeltaGrooveProductions.com -a blues label and film production company in Los Angeles).
KJ one night a week(Wednesdays) and do fill in gigs once or twice a month at different Karaoke bars around Portland.
In past lives: Managed retail stores for 10 years.
16 years in the Navy-retired as Chief Electronics Technician(SW).
As a high school kid--flipped burgers at Magic Mountain for two years and did the taco thing at a taco stand.
Always busy, never a dull moment and ALWAYS got something to do!

Speech-Language Pathologist...Communication Disorders Specialist... or whatever the degree progam calls it... thats me.
Started working in the public schools... did that for 5.5 yrs.... then went to a Center for the Developmentally Disabled for a 1.5 years ... then to a hospital for 1 year... and then went to the University level .... and have been there going on 19 yrs. Began Teaching courses on Speech/Language Developement, Vocal performance/Hygiene, Counseling families who deal with Traumatic Brain Damage, and Evaluation and Diagnosis of Speech-Language Disorders ... then went into administration, and ran the 100 patient on-campus/Community Clinic, but that got old fast, 'cause I found I was dealing more with lawyers and other administrators than I was with patients.... so went back to teaching and providing supervision and mentoring to students persuing Master's Degrees in Communication Disorders about 4 yrs. ago ... and still am doing it today. Pretty stressful job... but I do love it.
Then .. met the 'hubby' about 6 yrs ago ... and instantly became a co-host for Karaoke shows 3 days weekly ... And also am partner in the DJ/Sound Reinforcement portion of his business, as well.
Yup... really busy most of the time.. but it keeps me young.... hahaha.... TIRED .. but young.

kappy, you do fine, except for the occasional preposition at the end of a sentence and of course the apostrophes (no apostrophe). i forgive you even if nobody else will.
timberlea...are you a kindergarten teacher? just a guess...
kjsrbest...hmmm...curious...if men would not want to know and women are just as much to blame...do you provide the penicillin shots at the local clinic? an honorable profession, in my opinion.

I'm the front desk manager/receptionist/slave girl for a tax accountant. It's not terribly exciting, but it pays most of the bills. A couple nights a week I get to play rockstar, which of course is much more fun than being an office lackey.

Grew up on a farm in Nebraska. Did some farming and some cowboying and left for the bright lights of the big city.
A couple of years of college. Wanted to be a high school basketball and baseball coach and a history teacher. Never did any of that.
U.S. Navy for a little while. Undistinguished career but at least I didn't head for Canada like some of my contemporaries. I recieved a medical discharge and recieve a smal disability pension. Fortunately my disability isn't serious enough to have kept me from doing anything I wanted to do, other than to become the World's Fastest Man. But then I was never very fast in the first place so it's not like I gave up a possible dream.
Banker for almost 20 years. Worked on the lending side making every type of loan you can think of except agricultural. "Downsized" out of that industry at a time when jobs were very difficult to come by.
Since then I've worked in accounting as a Chief Financial Officer or Controller for several small, undercapitalized and unfortunately unsuccessful busnesses.
For the past 2 1/2 years I've worked for a temp firm that specializes in accounting. No benefits and at a pay rate about 1/3 of what I was making formerly. This is a great way to go broke a little at a time rather than all at once.
I'm conducting what they call a "career search" which is employment agency speak for I'm looking for a permanent job (or as permanent as it gets these days).
I've been a singer/musician for nearly 40 years and I think of that as my profession. I work all week so I can afford to be a rock star (my galaxy is a very small one so far unidentified by Rolling Stone Magazine) on the weekends. I also KJ an occassional karaoke show.
As an aside, I agree with the comments about the deplorable state of the written word. The emphasis on literature is wonderful except that no one seems to have caught on to the fact that there won't be any more literature if no one can write. I have nightmares that 100 years from now they will be using old Pee Wee Herman or Friends scripts as the best examples of 20th Century American literature. (momentary pause to shudder and gasp at the thought) One of the reasons I like forums such as this is that while we may not be making literature here at least we're fostering the written word as a communication tool. In that respect we're doing better than many of the schools. (oops, tripped and almost fell while climbing down from my soapbox)
