With Access you don't always have to type in the songs.  If you order cdgs on-line for example, and the vendor has posted a list of the songs and artists you can copy that to Notepad, add field delimiters, save it as an ascii file and then import that into Access.  You still have to do some data entry but it's easier than keying everything manually.

Wow! There sure are a lot of different opinions about what to use to make your songbook. When I first started hosting Karaoke, I just went to Word Perfect and set up a table with three columns which can be sorted any way you want to sort and Bingo, I had a wonderful book that is very easy for the "drunks" to read. Sure I have to manually type in new discs, but for the quality I think it is worth it. Most of the books I've seen at other shows aren't very good. Of course, I haven't been to a whole lot of shows either.  Just my opinion.

I'm a two finger typer and I sure as heck don't want to have to enter 900 discs by hand.    KJ Pro just find the disc number, flag it and enter.    I have to add discs that aren't in my latest download.

I used Karaoke speedbook for a while, and I really liked the output for printing.  However, drawbacks include an out of date database, and I had an unpleasant experience with their tech support.  For $30, it's not a bad deal though if you're just getting started.

If you have a large songbook though, I'd go with KJ pro, I use it now and it's really easy to use.  Well worth the cost.

:D Oh Yeah! I agree, I wouldn't want to have to type in over 900 disks either, but since I started the book when I only had 20 disk, I never have to type very many at a time now. If I were to ever loose my file I would probably be looking for one of the programs that have been mentioned in this thread. That's why it is not only saved to my hard drive, but also backed up on cd and on a flash drive. I'm not taking any chances. I'm a fairly good  typeist, but I don't enjoy it! (lol)

MS Excel is my choice. I have added a macro in order to eliminate duplicates before printing the books, whereas my book contains all songs.

the problem with Excel is you have a number size limit issue... around 15,000, and excel gets really weird!!!

Access has no such restrictions,

I too started out with Karaoke Speedbook... and it's a terrific product. I do like that it will go through the dupes and has multiple printing options (duets, country, etc)... I just found however, that if I have to manually input the info, Access is easier than Chip's Speekbook.

I think he means the total number of records in Excel. I know it does have some limitations on handling a large number of recordsin Excel, another reason database is a better solution, whether Access or commercial product.

yeah, I noticed when I got around 15,000 records (I'm over 16,000 now) that it had a HORRIBLE time saving, sorting, moving records, etc...

Errr.....Split the file into 2 parts
1 file for a-l
2nd for m-z

Yeah a bit of a pain, but if you are having problems, perhaps that will work

I did a song book for my inlaws with all their DJ and KJ stuff.  Had about 25,000 records, and no problems sorting, saving, ect...   Perhaps you are running out of memory on the computer with a large file?????

Hi folks
I am new to this, and just starting out.  I have Access, but have never used it.  Would someone be so kind and show me the layout.  In otherwords, what to name the fields etc.  I have some disks coming, and would like to be on top of it when they arrive.

I want to build my own database now, and later branch out to shows.

Thanks
Bernie
