About the part where Simon says that certain performances sound like karaoke is not really supposed to be an insult to those who sing it. I think what he means by that is...When you sing karaoke, you are more less expected to sing the song in the original style in which the artist does. When these contestants are competing for the win, they are supposed to be taking these songs they choose and changing them up somewhat with their own style. When it doesn't sound like they change it up all that much from the original, that's where the comment comes in about sounding like karaoke.
Also I don't believe Chris's style would be considered punk. Maybe more like Alternative Rock. Punk music is generally short in length and a faster pace rythmically.

It's disappointing chris won't be there next week but I'll be looking for him soon!  :biggrinthumb:

I don't watch the show, I hate it.    It's a repeat of the gong show without the gong.   If it was a real talent show, they would not show all of the people that can't carry a tune, as they do.   It's a night time soap opera.   Same story lines.    You watch the show to hear Simon make fun & pick on people. To destroy them in a public humiliation.   You are sicker than the rest.

Wrong. I, and others, watch this show to hear talented singers compete for the title of "American Idol." This may not fit your definition of a "real" talent show on every level, but you have to admit that in most talent shows there are those who "can't carry a tune" who are still allowed to sing. (School shows, county shows, fair shows, karaoke shows, etc.) Even local Colgate Country Showdowns have had their share of the bad singers.

Quote:
Most of them do suck and we don't need to see them on TV.    They created the controversy to make you act like you are now.   You will be back next week to watch the next chapter.    Jerks that like soap operas, will love the show.

You're right, I will watch next week. I like seeing Elliot sing, I want to see if Kathryn does any better and if Taylor finally steps it up. That is, right after I tune in to "As the world turns"

Quote:
Look how everyone is caught up in this thing.   Who gives a flip.    It's not about talent, that's just a disguise.    It's called "making Big money".   They just found a new way to do it.    Wish I'd have thought it up.   It's TV ratings time.   It's when they decide how much the TV commercial air time will cost.    If they had 3 guys as the last contestants they would lose all of the male audience.   Lost veiwers, equals lost money.     It's a business and sex sells.   They sucked you in and now they are sucking the money out of your pocket, everytime you watch it.

Everything is about ratings. What show was made for the viewers' pleasure? I think everyone's aware that the producers were thinking "cha-ching" when they created AI. So it's not that they sucked us in. We really just don't care. Oh, and I don't know what money they're taking from my pockets when I watch every Tuesday/Wednesday. I have cable.

Quote:
I DO NOT BELIEVE FOR ONE SECOND THAT IT IS A FAIR CONTEST.  Said it from day one.   I don't waste my time getting sucked into 3/4 of the crap they put on TV.    I.E. American Idol, soaps, game shows, survivor, etc.   Get a life.... Sounds like my loser neighbor....cuts his grass 2-3 times a week, for what?   I think he does it to get away from his wife.

Who said anything about fair?

Quote:
You are right to talk about the "commerciality" of the songs sung.   The more main stream it is, the more votes you get.    Mass appeal sells.   So in a way, it's not fair to lump everyone into the same contest.   To be judged side-by-side.    He may be the next biggest thing to hit the recording industry.   But not judged beside her, being she was more main stream.
Mr. October, help us out here.   If your show consisted of all punk music, would you be making any money?   Very small demand for that show, right?    You have to be commercial.   It wouldn't mean you don't have any talent, just no work.

Are you kidding?!?? Punk music is gaining a big audience right now. Ever heard of Avenged Sevenfold, All American Rejects, Panic at the Disco, Green Day... there are so many others I can't think of them. I personally don't listen to punk, but there's even a new group or "clique" out that's dedicated to punk. It called being "emo." It's big for 18 and under.

Quote:
If you don't think it's fair or right.   STOP WATCHING, QUIT GIVING THEM YOUR MONEY.    Make them cancel the show.....  But quit crying about it.....my mouse pad is getting soggy.

I don't see anyone crying. I see people conversing and debating like adults. If YOU don't like the show, then why not stop watching this topic?

Now that........ was good.  :D

I agree with ya Amanda. Seems we can't talk about anything here and "agree to disagree".... or even "agree" (period)..... without someone saying we need to "get a life".

Heck, read back through the threads..... I started off the AI season swearing not to watch the show (again)... but as usual, I got pulled into it.

It's good TV, there are hella good singers on there, and hell yeah it's being commercialized..... hello, it's tv- duh. But good for you for saying this like some of us already should have. People so against it really should just....stay out of the threads about AI.

Thanks! Even if they don't like AI, and they want to participate, at least respect everyone's opinions. Example: I'm not a Taylor H. fan. But do I say "Ya'll need ta geta life, you Taylor Fans!" ?? Nope. I respect your opinion, and I state mine. If you don't like the show I watch, that's fine. But don't presume to know what type of person I am by the tv shows I watch. That's like saying because I'm 20, I irresponsible. Or because I'm a girl, I like shoes.

I haven't been following AI that close due to my work schedule but from what I have seen chris seemed far above the rest. I would like to see Elliot win for the simple fact he started singing at the Karaoke shows of a guy I work for in richmond virginia. Right before he went to try out for AI he won $1000.00 in a contest at my friends show.

While I enjoy the show and root for my favorite to win, I never foget for a moment that it is a money making venture.  That is the hard fact of life.  I don't know where a certain person formed the opinion of it being similar to "The Gong Show". I suppose it would be okay to compare professional basketball to the old "Beat the Clock" TV game show.

I can't understand how anyone could hate the show if they've never seen it but that's another story.  I personally detest the commercialism, but that's part of the money spinning at work.  You have to accept that these days.  Everybody is out to make a buck.

What I am thrilled about is it gives my favorite singer well deserved recognition.  Yes, he will get negative comments from the other camps, but when you are in the public eye, that is expected.  There are pop stars working today whom I think are plainly ludicrous, but they are not competing against each other so you won't hear too many deleterious comments about them in general.  What would happen if you pitted Usher against,  say, one of my favorites, Harry Connick? It's apples and oranges.  It's not just a matter "who" but "what" they do best that makes people defensive, and unfortunately, derisive about the other performers.

With that said, GO GO ELLIOT!!!!!

To Mr. Dog:  The title of the show IS "American Idol" not "Underground Avante Garde Artists".  Imagine my shock when you told us it was just "commercialism"!!!
Quick, the smelling salts!! Sheesh...as I say, unless you've walked in the other man's shoes you have no idea how much they stink!  Aloha!

It's not just on here, it's all over the news shows.   They are pretty much saying the same thing as I.    It's not all about talent.   Everyone is in "shock" about poor what's his name.   When Simon doles out his insults it's "GONG" you're gone.  Can't make it any simpler.   If that ain't the same what is?    Same results, the audience gets a big laugh at someone's expense.   There used to be a Gong show karaoke around here.    Now if that didn't hurt the karaoke cause nothing did.    Everyone knows that we are all not professional singers and the reason for us doing karaoke in the firts place is to make money.   Well no one will make any money if no one shows because they don't want to be made fun of.    HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF SOMEONE STOOD UP AT KARAOKE AFTER YOU SANG YOU'RE BEST SONG AND YELLED FOR THE ENTIRE BAR TO HEAR, "YOU SUCK"?     Not real good for business.   Wouldn't take too many of those to kill your crowd.

As someone who has certainly entertained in publiic, either in comedy, song or as pianist, it is always hard to take that kind of criticism.  Fortunately, and I think someone here is too deep in there own negative little world to realize, you will NEVER get an entire room full of people who will say "YOU SUCK" (unless of course, you really, really, really do suck!)  There is always somebody who will get enjoyment from your willingness to entertain them.   Sheesh....I need an aspirin with mayo!

Elliot uses his vibrato when needed in the song.  If you sing properly, you have a vibrato.  Kathyrn has a fine vibrato.  Taylor has no vibrato and from what I can tell has an 8-note range and can't sustain a note for the life of him! Sorry, I've been seeing too much Elliot bashing lately and I'm pig-biting mad and making a disgrace of myself!! Aloha!

Okay, but you're not getting the point. EVERYONE understands that it's not just about talent. That's been made clear by different people, pointing out that they judge the singers based on looks, performance, genre, charisma, personality, and of course, vocal ability. Thing is, the majority agree that poor what's his name (Chris, by the way) had the "package" deal and so that's why I/we were in "shock." And, when someone has a fav, they usually think that their singer has most of the said above or at least something special that makes up for what they lack. No big news flash though, that the singing biz wasn't named after the job description. A passing voice can made. Star power is something your "born" with. (Look at Britney Spears...)

Since when did Simon become a crowd?   It's just one guy saying it.  He just happens to be on national TV.   In front of millions of people.   Pretty powerful "YOU SUCK'" (GONG) if you ask me.    It only will take one at karaoke to yell it.   If you don't stop the snowball it's going to be an avalanche.     It's still about making money.  Why would you waste time watching a show that is not going to have a legitament outcome.    May as well watch the soap with the magical witch.    It's why I'll never do a karaoke contest again.   TOOOOOO many cry babies.   No one is ever happy.    The contests we did do in the past were as fair as possible and we still had very unhappy people.   I was giving away mine and the bar owners money, so I reallly didn't care who won.  But that didn't stop people from complaining about the winner.  The money was still gone.   All the crying just reminds me of a karaoke contest gone wrong.   In everyone elses eyes.

I think you misunderstood there, buddy. By being born with star power, I meant a person must be born with a certain amount of mass appeal. Charisma, looks, marketability, etc. Passable vocals can be manufactured via studio (here's where the Britney Spears reference fits in.) Find someone with the right outside package and personality, slap some effects on their vocals and with the right team of people they're a star. Imo that's why Kellie Pickler made it so far in AI to begin with. She didn't have the best vocals AT ALL. Her personality and looks kept her on the show.

I think what we mean here is "marketability"---it might not pass the test of time, but it is what sells right now.  Sorry about my reaction to the mention of B---- S---- (hey, how about that?) but just the thought of some of those plastic goods they force upon us makes me wince something awful.  xoxo Michael
