Have any of you KJed during spring break - Here on the Island, no rules apply.  The kids seem to have complete control.  Tonight a one local bar there must have been ten to twenty kids at a time trying to get up to sing at once.  From what I've been told by some of the KJs, it's a nightmare - steeling and breaking equipment.  For myself - I just got up and left, so I have no idea what the outcome was tonight.  Folks, this is every year.

Somewhere on my forehead there's a tatoo that says, "come on up gal and sing with me,".

Rules what are rules

I have this annoying singer that bugs me constantly about what he is singing next.
I have asked him to only approach me after a singer has started singing and I am done setting my mixer.

Last night I'm trying to help a singer who was attempting to sing a song he really didn't know and I had my hand on the mixer adjusting a knob at the same time. My annoying pest comes up behind me tugging on my back.

I yelled at him and told him if everyone bothered me as much as he did
I would not be able to do my job. I felt bad after, but darn it - I'm not his mother and
I don't like a little kid pulling on my apron strings all the time.

My rule push me to far and I blow

My internet has been down, so I am finally back to see more replies.

I cannot STAND being hounded about when somebody is going to be up to sing.   My gig gets so bad that these babies get their friends to come up and start asking...or "requesting" that their friend gets to sing some song that they need to hear.  Ugh...

What do ya'll do about people who scream in the mic?  I mean, I try to have my hand on the slider on the mixer, but the first time they yell it can usually slip by me.

Oh yeah, and people who use aliases...and their friends put them in under a different name and ya don't know it till they get up to sing.

Always something....

Karaoke is like crack to some people... for real.

Oh yes I have had all these problems - Once you get them under control
you'll be fine.

1st - alias names - You have to nip it in the butt as soon as it happens. When you call
them up to sing and you realize they have already sung under another name, you hand them back the slip and tell them they can not do this. Then announce over the microphone "Please use one name to sing under if you give me a slip with different name than the one you have been using, you will lose your turn in the rotation. It is not fair too the other people waiting their turn. Do this a few times and it will stop all together.

2nd - If people are turning in slips for someone to sing a request, fine. But ask them if the person knows they are doing this. If they are just bugging you to let this person sing, you tell them he has to wait his turn like everyone else. Again use the microphone - announce " Please if you want someone to sing ask them if you can put a slip in for them - I will not for any reason although move them up in rotation. We have to considerate to the many others who are waiting to sing.

3rd - Screamers - I hate them too. I imediately put my hand on their shoulder and ask them not to scream in the mic it can harm the equipment. If it happens again turn their mic way down. When they turn around to say " hey I can't hear myself, tell them I asked you not to scream if you stop I will turn it back up. If it happens again stop the music and ask them to leave the stage. Announce on the mic screaming is not tolerated it can harm the equipment.

You may have some whiners in the beginning, but once they realize you mean business they won't bother you. You have to stick to your guns. They will respect you for it. I have never lost a customer by doing this and I have a tough crowd!

I have this really nice younger guy that bothers me constantly about what he should sing next , when will I be up next or change his next song to be sung 5 times before he is up. I pulled him aside and told him to wait until I'm done setting the mixer and helping the singer. The following night I had an extremely busy night. He kept bothering me like a kid pulling on a mother's apron strings. I had one hand on the mixer and was helping the singer because he didnt know the song well. This guy started tapping on my back. It's 2am in the morning and I'm stressed. I turned around and yelled not now! Then I pulled him aside and told him if everyone bothered me as much as he did I wouldn't be able to do my job. I felt bad after.
He still comes in every night I work, but is much more considerate.

Believe me I have a lot of stories. (Me Me Me) I need to sing because I'm leaving , you skipped me,  I'll give you money to put me up more or Sally wants me to sing.

My worst offenders of bugging me all stopped when I put my foot down. Just say "Sorry NO, it isn't fair to the others waiting", then turn your back. If they don't stop ignore them. Or use the mic. " Who here would like to give ther spot up in the rotation for ______". When no one offers their turn, tell them "Sorry, NO"

If someone jumps up without being asked, I go step them back off the stage.
