Actually it was 7 on destroyers and 13 on submarines....And yeah, all my submarines were nucs...And if you say nucs are nice and roomy, try 105 days under the ice cap on a tiny fast attack boat with 100 other squids.
Then there was my last sub. It was a converted boomer(missle boat)...Lots of room, right?...Wrong, we carried two seal teams and all their weapons and other stuff. Even had a mini submarine strapped to our back....At the time we were the only anti-terrorist submarine in the world, so we stayed gone...Spent a solid month in Beirut harbor hiding under one freighter after the next while they lobbed 155's in the water cause they kinda figured we were there....
I don't miss it, but beats being married anyday.

I never said I served on 20 ships in 20 years....I'll type slowly in case you don't read fast
My normal rotation was 5 at sea, 2 ashore....My "shore" tours was in direct support of fleet units....So I ended up at sea while "ashore"....I retired MMCS(SS) COB designated.

I served on DDG-23, DD-942...Then SSN-673, SSBN-611(converted to SSN), SSBN-628 Gold crew and LY Spear, Hunley and COMSUBLANT HQ...On the boats I was Diving Officer and Chief of the watch...And the last boat, COB....That don't count the boats i had to ride while "ashore" which was all in squadrons 6 and 8.
You SW guys were spoiled.

Ive been down inside a couple boomers. No--thanks! Nothin like standing JOOD in the southpac with stars out and the warm tropical air on a clear south sea night and REAL FRESH FOOD unrepped the day before!! Yep.................spoiled! Or maybe go catch a nooner nap in the sun-----------lotsa TANNING!! Or.......if only going 2-3 knots just drop the Marlin line over the side and do a BIT OF TROLLING for TUNA!!!
Yep would never trade skimmers for anything! No HOT RACKING for this SQUID!!
Check out this cruise we made on DD-972(my first ever westpac)---Hawaill, PI(4 stops at Subic), Okinawa, Hong Kong, Singapore(2 stops), Fremantle/Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Melbourne, Tauranga NZ, Timaru NZ, Auckland NZ(2 stops), American Samoa(Pago Pago), back to Pearl Harbor, back to SD. Never be another cruise like that one................talk about the recruiting poster cruise---lived THE DREAM on that one!
DD-972 USS Oldendoff(currently mothballed in Bremerton), DD-784 USS Mckean(Decommisioned & sold to Tiawan), FFG-40 USS Halyburton active. Shore-USNAVCAMSMED, Naples. Actually came into the Navy as a nuke trainee(RO) but bombed out of Nuc Prototype and ended up a radar tech on DD-972. Took it from there and went up the ranks as a comm and radar ET. Medically retired in 1991.

See, I told you were spoiled...you and your tan!
I wouldn't trade it for the nerve-racking hours/days/weeks/momths on end we spent spying and doing risky stuff....sneaking undetected into hostile harbors and doing bad things, then sneaking back out....I got to pee my name in the ice at the North Pole.....Baby, I was there, and you can believe my name is still there to prove it....And yeah, before Kappy comments, it was in my handwriting too.
