Before I forget, I think someone said that contests are for singers who think they're better than they really are, or something along those lines? Sorry, but I've personally been to many contests, karaoke and non-karaoke, where I've heard singers that would make you bawl. Talent is not measured by how many record contracts you may have sold, or how many people have heard you sing. Anytime people ask me where the local entertainment is in MY town, I don't point them to the nearest concert or local band gig. I tell them, "Go to Silver Dollar. Karaoke, Saturdays and Sundays. Best dang singers around, they'll make your head spin!"

As for telling the bad singers, or not quite so vocally endowed, that they need some improving... I suppose you can usually spot the ones who are serious about wanting to better themselves. "Kenny" and other regulars who sing all the time and genuinely love to sing would be the type that I would approach and offer advice to. I've found it best to let people know what my weaknessess are in the midst of constructive critisiscm, so they don't feel like I'm trying to come off as "high and mighty." So if I'm telling them that they sound a bit nasally and how to correct this, I'd let them know that I often have the same difficulty which prevents me from hitting my high notes correctly, yada yada yada.

But I wouldn't bother offering advice to the singers who are just there for drinking, fun and karaoke. Usually they come in the larger groups, with more beer, and they get a lot louder as the night goes on. I've also found that they like to pick the gender benders!

Hope this helps!
