As a singer, I like having the book.  I like to flip through the book between singing songs because I often will be reminded of something that I haven't sung in a long time, and to look for new songs to try.

As a host, I prefer the slips because if someone just comes up and tells me what they want to sing, I'm bad about getting sidetracked, so I might forget.  When someone does do that, I usually just grab a slip and jot it down, but would prefer that they do it themselves.

karayoker, I'm not sure where you  find time to talk to each singer and look up their songs!  Of course we still use discs so we have to re-file them.  Do the singers understand not to try to speak with you at the beginning of a song when you are adjusting for the singer or know to stop talking before a song ends so you can puff up the singer and make your announcements?  Some people have even tried to talk with us while we're announcing! Granted, this is rare but does happen...  Also, is your area away from the singer?  Ours is close to the singer so the KJ kind of has to walk away to have much of a conversation with someone without disturbing the current singer...

I picked up an extra birthday party sat.. There was a wedding reception in the big hall in back and a male stripper in another part in the back. I was in the main bar doing my party which was mostly dj. It was a older crowd that was even dancing to in the "In the Mood". In a crowd where I dont know most of them I go thru sort of a formal intro.. I told everybody this would be mainly DJ but if anybody wanted to sing just let me know and I would work them in When the current song was over and I take requests for regular music. ..Which I had to because there were dancers almost every song. When the oldtimers found out I had the old stuff they started coming up one at a time "Have you got so & so?" Or what have you got sinatra?  I would do a quick search they would look at the computer screen "Therre it is" A couple of mouse clicks would put it a song or two down the list and they would walk away with a big grin... I do run with a snake and sit out in the audience but they learn real quick if a singer is just starting I will ignore them while I am adjusting the sound which they understand...I get to flirt with the gals, be more personable with the crowd which generates more bookings downstream...

Ok the downfalls..........Sometimes it seems like my ears are plugged up like when the system dont quite sound right and if we are cranked it is hard to hear the requests at which time i just hand them a slip and pen they grin and write it down.. Another is I'm getting senile I think and cant remember names to save my a**. During regular karaoke I now request a slip the first time and try to remember the the name with each face esp when I got a bunch of singers I dont know. Afew people asked for songs and the search didnt come up with it. It's in the book they would say.. I chuckled and said thats a karaoke book if you would like I'll sing it which a few said ok.. Now I need some dj books

From the responses I have seen to my first post they think I am locked into a method.. I can switch dj to kj or shift the method of taking requests in a heart beat.. I talk to my people and let them know whats going on. I am not in a rut too boring for me... And when it is done and 2 or 3 people walk up and say hey old man you do a good job...Suddenly I am not as tired as I thought I was. I will continue to perfect this system for it establishes new friendships and bonds, business and a satisfaction that almost you get from turning on a crowd from singing.. Now if I can just remember their names..
Ok Sue now I'm done rambling LOL :(

LOL - I didn't think you were locked into a method; certainly no more than we are!  :)  I just don't see where you have the time to search for songs for people, especially if they come to you and ask you if you have a particular artist!  I envision something like this:

Customer - -"Do you have any Elvis?"
KJ - "Sure do, do you have a particular song in mind?"
Customer - "Which ones do you have?"
KJ -

And this could go on & on.....

When I sing I'm not sure what I want to do until I take a spin through the book....  I guess this is the point where you refer them to the book though.  I'm sure you also have alot of people that do the same songs each time so that would make it easy for both of you.

I know what you mean about suddenly not being so tired when there is positive feedback!  What a rush!

Susie :)

I didn't understand that they are within view of the screen; the way we are set up we are separated from the singers by a table or booth....  That's great, they just point, you click...
