They never made a LIVING out of it, but it was always money in their pockets...... and gained them more gigs for private parties & such. Who were they? Was it a band or just a duo (these sometimes to pay a little better because they can book into clubs that couldn't have bands as a rule. But I know playing the Seattle/Tacoma (Oly too) circuit doing cover music & original music, the money isn't there. Went through agents & booked on our own (actually made more booking ourselves). Quote: Truthfully, I've seen and heard alot of bands at paid gigs that really were not very good. Maybe they were cheap. I guess maybe it partly depends on what KIND of music you play. If you're looking to be another rock band, you're outnumbered....... there's just too many of them out there.
If the bad ones were doing cover songs then chances are they were making anywhere from 200-300 per night, if they were good, then probably more like 600-1000 per night. We have 1 cover band - mostly alternative rock - that are pulling anywhere from $1500-3000 per weekend. But they ROCK as well.

Well, needless to say, the 9 piece funk bands (w horn section) I suppose aren't that lucrative these days. As close to impossible as it was to keep that type band together even for just practices, there was a certain charm to an ACTUAL horn section (genuine brass timbre) playing certain classic rock songs while covering EW&F, BS&T, AWB, Cool and the Gang, Chicago, Tower of Power, NRBQ w (Whole Wheat horns) etc...
Dang, *THAT* I loved participating in as a musician. Larger Swing, and Jazz type ensembles aren't that lucrative these days unless they are HUGE dedication bands, and there are VERY few.. Even-so, jazz ensemble is more for hobbyist's and the honor of being a part of the group these days....Little venue payout per musician...

Unfortunatly we broke up a couple years ago. Lost our drummer & I developed carpultunnel in my guitar hand :(
But, we had a website up, it may still be active. See if I can get the link. Actually have a couple songs in the Showcase, do a search for Lonman.

Quote: $100 a night to sing in a band? You must be joking. Let's see an average of 8-10 songs a set, usually three sets a night, nope too much strain on the vocal cords for that amount of money. You think I'm kidding? Try it. Do three 40 minute sets with 20 minutes between sets, at home and then see how you feel.
Tim >>
During My MrOctober Show I end up singing about 46 Songs. I have a woman sing while I take a break, My breaks are usually around 15 to 20 min.
Luckily That show (for now) is only Once a month, During December I did 3 Back to Back show's and came thru ok.
I usually find that hot Green Tea from a chinesse place around the corner works well to soften my throat, before and during my show.
altho I usually end up Saving my Rod Stewart impersonation till my 4 or 5th set.
the show is a 4 hour show.
As for singing with a band VS Karaoke
Ill take my Mroctober show with my Karaoke tracks any day.
I allways show up for Practice.
And I dont have to split the Take with anyone not even my Break Singer she does it for the fun of it.
LoL $100.00 Bands down here dont even get $100.00 a piece per night ...more like $50.00 Each.
I do it for fun but the money helps me buy more toy's

haveing done both myself also, i would pick karaoke,
first.... i wouldn't sing for 100.00 a night, not that i'm that great but i found u pay for what you get, 100 bucks doesn't get u much these days, not here anyway...
second....altho u may screw up there r or was in my case 4 others to blame it on...and trust me i did... ....so no problem there, plus like lonman said they can pick u right back up. in karaoke YOU follow the music, in a band....the music follows YOU, for the most part anyway, depends on how much u drink i guess...
third...karaoke is just for fun, no pressure, in a band ur family depends on you to make a living, sad part is when ur playing ur playing because u love it and you HAVE to sing, not that ur familys not in ur mind at the time but at the time they do kinda come second....
forth.....playing in a band is a job, like it r not u have to treat it as such...r you won't be making a living for very long.....
Lonman is so right when he said its a bigger rush, nothing like it, compared to karaoke there is no comparison...
so yes karaoke all the way.....kick back relax and sing ur heart out

No problem ,OK What Now.....I forgot to mention I dont sing for $100.00 either... I get from $250.00 To $350.. a show depends where I do it. its alot of work but well worth it.
I have a good Loyal Following and a bunch of groupies that drink alot so the Lounge Can afford it.
I diggin Life here in Sunny Florida.
I used to sing in Bands as well, back on Long Island through the 70's, and in the 80's and 90's in Phoenix AZ.
too much hassle ...drummer breaks up with G/F quits band, guitar player drinks too much, 2 people show up for practice,,the problems go on and on.

I've sung with a band a few times, and it's fun. Hell, if I could make a living out of music, I'd love to. But I kinda like where my life's been headed lately, so I'm a karaoke guy.

So Mr. O---is that a regular lounge act you do or is combined with karaoke??
We have a guy that does sometihing like that --strictly Sinatra--calls himself THE VOICE. Uses an MP3 machine with a small remore to cue up songs then hes sings thme--Does this at a hotel lounge and for private dinner parties. He also does singing telegrams.

Hey Swingcat
It's just a lounge act. I was going into this place for a year Just singing during their tuesday night Karaoke shows and for six months the owner kept trying to get me to commit to a full singing show of my own.
One Day I got up thought about it and bought some equipment and some karaoke tracks and booked a date with the lounge.
The first two sets are mostly Sinatra ,Martin, Ray Charles, Neil Diamond and some Bobby Darin.
By the end of the night It's pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, lots of 70's and stuff.
I do also Host Karaoke shows probably once a month or so when they need me at the Eagles club. I do not like hosting Karaoke at all.
I use Karaoke tracks for my show. with a 17 inch Flat pannel PC monitor on the floor off to the side. so I know where Im at during the song. I'm not a reader just use it just like Frankie did incase I forget a verse. (scooby doobie dooo)
From listening to your post's Im sure you can pull off a show as well. There are probably about 5 people down here now that are trying to get their own show going kinda like mine, some are good some need to stick with just singing karaoke. it takes alot to sing all night long and make it interesting to watch.
as well as being ABLE to sing for a long time.
my last show I sang 46 song's, this next one on Feb 2nd I hope to get my Break Girl to go a little longer during her set's.
to keep my count down.
I love it and get a wedding or a private party Booking out of each Show I do at Emeralds Lounge.
Thanks for Reading
Michael
