Since this thread is still active, I'll come back and let everybody know that I've been out to karaoke several times since the original problem, including places with the same KJs where I had the problem, and everything has been fine.
I'm inclined to think that the problem was caused by an overly loud venue making me feel like I had to sing loud when I didn't. Either that or I had been sitting too close to the speakers all night before I sang. Whatever the problem was, it seems to be solved for now.

I'm glad the problem has been resolved for you. I just wanted to add my two cents:
I have noticed that when the club is really loud I can't hear myself either (at certain places I sing) but my friends around the place say they heard me just fine, so I've learned to just sing in my comfortable level and trust the KJ to do their job. Personaly, I'd rather sound good and not be heard than to sound bad just to be heard..........

The first time this happened I figured they just didn't have the mic turned up loud enough, but now I'm starting to wonder if it's just me.
When I sing my first song at a comfortable volume/octave, it seems like my vocal gets completely lost. Then for my second song I'll try to adjust by singing one octave higher, allowing me to increase the volume. This gets me all screwed up, because it gets too high for me, so I either switch octaves constantly (sounds dumb) or get completely messed up and go way off-key (sounds really, really dumb).
An associated problem is that when the bar gets noisy and I've been talking really loudly between my songs, I feel the need to shout when I get up to the mic, and can't seem to get my normal softer singing voice back.
Do I just suck, or has anybody else experienced this?
It could also just be the layout of the sound system. Your voice may sound weak on stage compared to the music, and completely normal to everyone else in the audience. I sing at one place that is like that - since they added wireless mikes when I sing there I:
1) Sings songs I know the lyrics too off the top of my head
2) Move out to where people eat & drink and sing there.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh, much better. But, it seems to me the KJ needs to do some better dialing in.

HEADS TOGETHER @ Thu Apr 28, 2005 3:48 pm wrote:  Hi Folks.. I go to karaoke 2 to 4 times a week and 8 out of 10 guys who hold a microphone do not hold it properly. Seems to be a bigger problem with guys than girls..(I ain't going there) I see em have their hand all over the end of it, singing into the side of it, holding it upside down in the air, or coming into it sideways, covering all but a tiny place on the end, too close, too far away, etc etc. etc. It's hilarious just to watch em. I am a people watcher anyway and sometimes I just crack up watching it...If ya think I am nuts start paying attention..and I promise it is a GUY thing...Just watch em.. So my first thought, after poor KJ who doesn't mind his levels (which is an epidemic it seems) is: Are you holding your mic properly, because YES, it does matter!! Why do guys seem to think they have to cover the mic to use it properly. I try to tell them the mic will pick them up better if they get their hand off it....
Seriously, low tones carry less volume. I can't tell you how many singers I've had that I can barely pick up when they start a song...but when it gets to the chorus, the high part, a part they know or the chance to just yee-haw, they can break your eardrums and your speakers.
I have some singers that I don't give as much volume to because I know they're gonna break my eardrums on the next note. I use a compresser and try to ride the faders when I'm familiar with a singer's pattern...but some people are just unpredictable.
If you feel like you don't have enough volume on your mic, ask yourself if you're blowing the room out on parts of the song. Proper mic control can enable the KJ to give you a lot more overall volume without inflicting pain or damage to the patrons/equipment.

I have given up on this long ago as many of my "allstar singers" as they think they are either put their hand over the end of the mic like a rapper, or hold the damn mic 2 feet from their face and then wonder why they feed back... I announce proper mic handling like a flight attendent before every show, and even have it in the front of my book. but so many people refuse to hold a mic properly.... we know when you're so loud that you're on the verge of feedback. yes the people on Tv hold the mic far away, but they're using a $2900.00 sehhheiser condenser mic that will pick up a full range fly fart from across the room....
it is possible that he's just music heavy, but consider the fact that you may be mishandling the mic...
also, I know that in a smaller show with smaller speakers, you can do different things than with massive towers, subs, and stage monitors..... you can only get so loud with the mic gain before all hell breaks loose.... Even with compressors, you can only squeeze so much sound from a foot away....
my fix is usually to get the singer to the verge of feedback, and reduce the music as much as it takes to even out the mix..... their song is softer than everyone else's, but that's the only way you'll hear them.....
