I'm not a professional, but I can tell you what I hate what KJs do: that's sing way too much, at all really.

We went to club a couple of times that had karaoke. The first time the KJ kept singing regularly even though so many people were waiting and had to wait so long. Annoying.

Went back another time. The KJ was introducing a new KJ, so 2 KJs. Same story but worse, the 2 of them sang every 3rd song, no exaggeration. With people waiting forever to sing. Now that's unprofessional. They were good and knew it, so what? That's not what they're there for and is not what paying customers are there for.

Never went back (and they went out of business). Instead built a great laptop system and collection with streaming to run my own show and have private parties of 10-30 family and friends in a "club" in my basement regularly for 2 years now. Added lots of "disco" LED lights and with cheap booze it's much better than a public club.

The DJ at my local club allows singers to smoke cigarettes on stage while they sing their song - they either hold their cigarette against the microphone or down by their side ready to have a puff between verses and during instrumentals. In addition the DJ also smokes while people are singing.

If it is a smoking establishment, there isn't much that can be done about that. My girlfriend runs some shows for me, but I don't let her smoke behind the desk. Not for looks, but enough smoke goes through the equipment just from being in the building, I don't want direct smoke going through my stuff.

You can tell them no smoking while singing. Has always worked for me.

Its usually not too bad - most of my singers who smoke hold the mic down when they take a puff

For 52 weeks I worked at a bar with a cigar license. That is the only way you can smoke at an establishment in Colorado. To my knowledge there are only 5 places like that in the Denver metroplex. Let me say it is a nasty habit of which I myself partake and can cut down but can not quit, at least as of yet. I do not smoke when at home. Rarely in the car.

I left that establishment simply because I did not like my equipment stinking up my SUV if left in it overnight and getting on my speaker cloths nor running through my laptop. Besides securing a gig to replace it. Tars are sticky and collect on the CPU's fan which then collect dust easier on the fan's blades and inhibits it's speed and airflow for cooling. Every so often, moreso than I wanted, I would have to open up the laptop to keep it cleaned.
