Now if that is a bottle of Spaten Optimator in Bazza's hand, in his avatar, I would have to say there is a definite connection.

You can buy used discs on ebay, and yes, buy out a KJ. That's how I got started as well.
That said, I position myself as "Music Entertainment" rather than a straight karaoke host.
I am also a turntable DJ... something I did AFTER I got into karaoke... I think I did it in reverse, but from a business standpoint, This open up a lot of business opportunities for me, including a steady gig with Spirit Cruises among other things.
That said, this job requires dedication, and constant efforts at improvement, and a hint of talent. Hosting a karaoke show, or programming a music set requires a good knowledge of music, AND a decent sized karaoke and music library.
That said, I LOVE what I do for a living.

Another option that has been mentioned in other discussion threads but not this one is now the availability of subscription streaming services like KaraokeCloud (about 6,000 songs) and Karafun (21,000+ songs). At around $150/month starting out, you have a sizable selection of songs. You can then start purchasing CDGs on eBay and from retiring KJs a little at a time as you can afford until you get to a point where you do not need to use the streaming services anymore, rather than having to spend upwards of several $1,000 dollars up front for CDGs.

What's the best way? Finding a CDG library for sale, and going through the conversation process? Would you buy the Sound Choice GEM set, or a different starter package?
What would you do? I started out with a Basic 7000 song library from CAVS super CDG disks (average price 4 cents a song) followed by a KaraFun subscription Just so I can have the latest songs in my library. As you make money from your shows, then gradually buy the most requested songs from karaoke.net or others just so you can own them and gradually drift out of the subscription all-together.

I started on CompuHost with KJ Media Pro and some Tricerasoft credits, so that if I added a song I owned it. Cost about the same as a three month subscription to streaming services like KaraokeCloud or Karafun but lasted a lot longer. Once I got out of the red and in to the black, I added some CAVS disks and on Black Friday I purchased the GEMS set.
