the new additions parry always bugged me. eight I kept adding on and felt unprofessional, or I reprinted and spent money. sorting by diuets and basic genre was something I wanted to try but never got to. with songbookdb I have a diet button and can sort by genre with a click. new additions are found by clicking the just added button but also show in the main section. after running for almost a year on it alone (no books at all) I have oddly found that the only computer illiterate people in the world are between 35 and 40. I put out two $99 laptops for kiosks for those that do not have smart phones and of all things the old crowds (vfw, dav, eagles, moose and elk) have no problems at all after showing them once. and the young 21 to 35 crowd don't even have to ask how it works. ( there's a big shock) 35 to 40 apparently have never touched a computer in their lives though.

Professionalism does cost a bit more, but its worth it. With all due respect, Griff, do I really want an update printing when there’s “more than a page or two of song additions”? Yeah, I’d really like to do that - all 510 pages in plastic sheet protectors so it will be 512 or 514 pages (back to back no dupes). 11 sets that will take me 4 days to accomplish! I guess NOT! Update every six months is just fine with me; with my assistant’s constant upkeep the books look professional & presentable at every show + they have the option of using laptop for easy access. Peace, bro!

I am very computer literate, but prefer to peruse a physical book at other shows. I can sit in front of the kiosk all night and peruse if one chooses. But I like to look and see what a kj offers - sometimes I see something that might remind me of something and so on. Cannot do that with just a kiosk and seems it would lock people into doing stuff more often than branching out. I am all for offering the technology for those who want to utililize those options - I do too, however the feedback I get is people still like to look at books. I have 15 books - they are ALWAYS out, even though the computer & smart phone options are readily available (some people use those too).

Professionalism does cost a bit more, but its worth it. I keep my add-ons alphabetized in their own section called "New Stuff" I'm sorry, but since I do my own books, why would I waste all that paper and ink to reprint my books every couple of weeks?? With my way, i only have to reprint a few pages every week. After a couple of months THEN I will mix all the new stuff in, reprint and start a NEW new stuff section. My books are neat, clean and concise. Meanwhile, my customers can see exactly what I have added, especially since my additions are mostly their requests, as soon as I get them. I certainly don't need YOU to tell me what is professional or not.

I believe he is talking about companies that just print a new page and throw it in, not incorporating anything else (this is my peave as well). So page after page of new lists not in any kind of order other than when they were put in the book - I have to admit I did it this way for the first few months I was in business, it quickly changed after I tried looking up something I knew was in the new section & couldn't find it either - I went to an incorporate all new songs & reprint that section after that. I have also witnessed the photo scan & print the cover of a disc and put that it not even taking the time to type it and print it - this is the laziest of lazy!

Out of the 478 new discs (425 from audioprola, and 53 from WI) I have about 2/3's of them ripped and it's looking like I may not make it for my 12/19/13 goal. After getting them ripped I still have to compare (to my existing songs) the artists and titles to make sure all the spelling is uniform and that is the most time consuming part.

But is so much worth it rather than seeing a bunch of mislabled songs of the same title - even though the host may only want to list 1 version. Typo's really screw that up too.

I'm like you... I typed my entire book out manually, using Microsoft Excel. Besides having it broken up by Artists and Titles, I also have a Special section that is broken down by Holiday Songs, TV Theme Songs, Irish Songs, Spanish Songs (since I only have about 15 discs worth of that), Duets, and Show/Movie Songs. That's awesome Cueball! Honestly, any more I have no idea of what all I have in the different categories. I've tried to create a special Christmas section, etc. but the duets are going to have to wait a while. That's a lot to sort out...

I have been rolling without a book for some time now. My in-laws stopped doing karaoke back in 2005. Me and my wife took over two years ago. We were using the book they had for a while but kept getting requests for songs that were missing, so we stopped putting the books out. I was gonna print a new book but there's so much work to be done to the file naming that I just haven't had time to do it all. I bought a program from Latshaw for fixing file names and so forth, and have fixed tons of errors but now I need to go back through and make sure everything is labeled in the same format i.e.. George Strait or Strait, George or the use of "the" like The Beatles or Beatles,The. Same with song names that begin with"the". I have a lot of work to do to get it all in a uniform format so it's presentable. Was thinking about buying Compuhost's program for printing books since I use Compuhost. Any other suggestions?

Yes, Use Latshaw's Song List Generator. It can print a book so many different ways it will make your head spin (with joy).

DO NOT buy compuhost's song book software. As much as I love the integration between the two programs the editing features are SEVERELY lacking.
Before i knew any better, I bought my copy of Fasttracks *the name of the program* for the lifetime database updates, and it was super easy to add new discs.
If I had to choose over again, I would get Bob Latshaw's Songlist Generator. I may not like his customer support, but the man knows how to make awesome software.
I use his file editor practically every week. *I am still tweaking my song list because for some reason if I do mass edits of my zip files it will corrupt a few of them*

IMO a pic or ad in a songbook is not going to set ones show apart from another. I as a singer do not look in a book to see pics or ads, I look to find a song. Also the books are big enough as it is, adding pics or ads will just ad to the size of the book and increase printing costs.

I just updated my books today as well. A total of 13 pages of new music since the October mini-run.
I changed up my books a little. Will post an image on Friday when I get them back from the printer.

I'm pretty sure my days of printing are over, with this year's update... I'm ditching the printed medium. The reasons for this are many, but it seems to me that practically, technology has made the printed songbook obsolete. Now, I'm sure that there are those who will cry "sacrilege!" but using a 100% digital medium means that: - your updates can be incorporated immediately. - Your singers can access your song database at anytime not just at your shows - no hunting for songbooks to give to singers - no 'sticky/ stinky' books to clean - save on expenses!!!!! - Your singers have the option to send you their song request from their phone! I intend to have one laptop that can be used, BUT more importantly, I will be printing out business cards with the songbook info on the back so I can use this as a marketing tool. "You have a cell phone? Here... just go here and look it up online! " https://www.songbookdb.com/apps/

Darn you audioprola for giving me such a great deal on that disc swap.

"You have a cell phone? Here... just go here and look it up online! " https://www.songbookdb.com/apps/So here is the biggest problem I have with this service - The book codes are case sensitive - https://www.songbookdb.com/books/PARA1 - Workshttps://www.songbookdb.com/books/para1 - FailsWe should not be forcing mobile users on tiny handsets to worry about capitalizing characters when looking for karaoke music. Hard enough to type on them as it is. OTHERWISE, I think it is a great system. I am going to start playing around with it and use my own domain name and web services to do redirects and eliminate the case sensitivity requirement. If it works I am going to add it to my system and see if it impacts book usage. I like books, but I know there are many who are fine without them. I will always have some books, but if I can reduce printing costs, I am going to do it. -Chris
