Well if 1/2 the people are your core group singing odd songs, the only way to limit it is to politely ask/suggest they sing some more popular songs. Pick some good songs that you think your singers might be good at, and say "Hey John, Have you ever tried SONG X? I think your voice is perfect for it!"

If that doesn't work you will probably have to limit your "a collection larger than most KJs ". Having all those songs can bite you in the (@$%&#!).

One of the great things about working downtown Seattle is the number of new people that come in singing "new" songs. We of course get our fair share of the much repeated tracks, but I have so many new people every week that it keeps things fresh.

Last night, a group was doing a happy hour tour and ended up staying until about an hour before close. Between them they sang a 1/2 dozen songs I had not heard in a long time, and several songs I had never played at karaoke ever. I also downloaded 2 songs for them which of course were "new" for that venue.

This is completely opposite from my Kent, WA show where very few new people come in and the regulars tend to stick to their go to songs. This is where we are going to do some things to get people to try some new stuff. Cross-gender challenges and kamikaze are on the books for at least one night a month now.

For several years now, I have very successfully culled the herd of obscure songs being sung, simply by removing them from the song books. It is amazing how many great songs get sung (songs the audience wants to here) when you remove the lesser known ones from the book. I will have to say that my books are a LOT smaller, but my singers find what they want to sing much quicker, and they actually get past the A's in the book.

Another technique that I use is using the original artist renditions of the new karaoke music as filler music. I was shocked last night when I played "Thrift Shop" at my generally country karaoke show and half the bar sang or danced along.
