Here is where I think the dividing line probably goes- a large selection get's people in the door, but it's the host/sound that keeps them there, or drives them away.

I was the 1st in my area to get the CAVS machine with 10,000+ songs, and less than 200 duplicates. At 1st, it was such a novelty, people flocke to see the selection. Then a few of my friends in the business went out and got the same system, from the same place. Since then, I have successfully taken over 2 of these other peoples shows- not because of selection or sound, but because of- well trying not to be egotistical- me as a host.

So basically, you can tell I am a Libra, and see both sides, but I think the answer is a library with 4-5,000 UNIQUE songs (not counting dupes), and a good personality that is the bare minimum for starting a show.

My $.02

Amen, CDG's are only a PART of the equation, tools. KJ's need enough tools to do the job, overkill is not a necessity, but a KJ can't expect to compete if he/she doesn't measure up to the established competition he/she is planning to get into the biz to compete against. The thread asks,"Hi guys & ladies, What is your opinion on the minimum amount of music CDs & CD-G s that is a must have before doing paying gigs ?" See what is the size of the area libraries. Check out the competition. Also what you plan to do with your library will also dictate what you need.

Here are some examples of selection for the target market:

Plan on doing one age group club work then there is no need for a lot of gospel music, children's music or a lot of Christmas music for outside parties, patriotic and military music for veterans events or older music for nursing homes. Some might have no need for foreign or other language discs for patrons/gigs etc. Anyone not playing for different age groups, or clubs with different preferences on music, say a college crowd, country crowd, ethnic crowd will not need a spectral selection.

This is what selecting a library for a target market means. There are some places that have the same crowd, who do sing the same song, others who server a wide range of club crowds and events outside clubs. If just getting in the market a library of what you are hearing sung (and listen closely to be able to choose) with a sample of many different genre discs will be a good start. There are many good starter sets with many price points. You can always build the library once you see what your market will be and where you want to go with your library.

Yea....what everyone else said!!!! I started a small show in South Texas with only 400 songs. I grew quickly.

The wonder of technology has now allowed me to move to doing my shows on a computer.......

I can choose my songs and buy then one at a time for $1.99 each. No disc to carry and no fluff (extra) songs.

This is what I use... WWW.Tricerasoft.com

Good Luck

I started with 186 CAREFULLY CHOSEN karaoke cd's 7 years ago. and my collection is now up to 562 cd's. That breaks down to about an average of 4 cd additions a month. Just think, I only have about 50 years to go before I have all 14,767 karaoke cd's manufactured to date!!!! I want to be like everybody else and end up with 67 versions of "friends in low places" Wouldn't that be great!!!! LOL
