I rarely sing the same song more than once, at the same venue....I figure, if I suck, at least I'll woo them with my variety....lol....my motto..."Quantity over Quality"

These are songs you love to sing and that the crowd enjoys when you sing them and gives you love in return.

Bill H, i see where you're coming from. While i'm hosting i would feel i was disservicing the crowd if i sang a song they couldn't relate to - despite if was a favorite of mine or not. As a host you're supposed to entertain the crowd, not bore them with an unfamiliar song.

On the contrary, if there's NOT many singers in the room and i'm just killing/filling time, or performing a paid request, then perhaps i'd sing something not so popular to the masses. -doesn't happen often.

You Have keep the crowd interested in your show and entertain or they'll go somewhere else more exciting.

Some of my favorites:

September- earth wind & fire
When I'm Gone- 3 Doors Down
Low- flo rida (me too bill)
Sway- michael buble (gets them dancing)
She Bangs- ricky martin (comedy/dance)
To All the Girls I've Loved Before- Willie& Julio (sing both parts/comedy)
Rappers Delight- Sugarhill Gang (awesome beat)
Beatles Medley on Zoom- (great opener)
Don't Stop Believin- Journey (crowd fav)
Santeria- Sublime (crowd fav)

Aloha. J.R.

Here's a few that I love to sing and usually get me and the crowd going.

Jenny, Jenny 867-5309, Tommy Tutone

Karma Chameleon, Culture Club

Creep, Radiohead

Champagne Supernova, Oasis

I try and gauge the crowd and sing songs that I feel the crowd will like, but I rarely sing songs that I don't enjoy singing ( mostly duets ) regardless if it's hugely popular. 80's and early 90's still fairly popular in our area. For a more rock oriented crowd I have a whole different set of songs. Rudy.

I usually have a hard time finding material which seems to work for me. However, the follwing seem to work out the best of late:

"Con te Partiro (Time to Say Goodbye)" --- Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli
"Art is Calling for Me" from "The Enchantress"--- Victor Herbert
"Phantom of the Opera"

Yeah what you've put down J.R. is exactly the way I see it. I'm not talking about crossing a line into monologues or jokes or anything. First of all, I'm not very good at being a comic, and secondly, when I've seen others do this sort of thing I didn't see it working particularly well when combined with karaoke. It's just what I sing when I get a shot at it.

As far as "Low" is concerned, I'm getting so identified with that song in my home room that that's all they request out of me. I think it's the combination of a great dance track and the spectacle of a middle-age white guy grabbing the mic and perfectly replicating this rap. And boy it was fun for awhile but now it is getting a little old....

We were talking about songs not ID'ed by their correct titles a few threads back and this is one of them. Everyone calls it "Apple Bottom Jeans" not "Low."

I always sing the ebay song now. It'll only work if there are screens where the aucience can see the lyrics though. Otherwise, I just look like a cheesey old crooner who forgot the words. :P

Never heard her or heard the song, but it sounds like fun!

There are so many songs I love to do--I don't really sing anything REGULARLY because I'm always trying new ones. That doesn't mean I don't repeat things sometimes; I do. It's just that I don't want myself or others to get burned out on the songs. And there are soooo many songs that I want to do...As I said on another board recently, sometimes I don't know what I'm going to sing, and I'll look thru' the book and something will hit me. Often it's a song that I love that I've never heard ANYONE sing for karaoke before. The other night I sang "Let My Love Open the Door" by Pete Townshend (I've never heard anyone else sing it for karaoke), and as the song started, I overheard a guy saying, "I haven't heard this song in a long time." And I thought, "YES!!!!!!!"

Sometimes I will look thru' the book and notice a song that I don't know very well, but think I would like to do it. So I'll get the CD or download the video on Youtube to make sure it's something I want to sing and that I think I'll be able to sing.

As for the crowd reaction, it varies. I applaud for everyone, but I've learned not to take it personally if people don't respond. Sometimes they get involved in their own little chit-chat and maybe don't realize that someone is singing.

One that I did recently was "Orinoco Flow" by Enya. That went over well--I wasn't sure how it would go over for karaoke, but people seemed to like it, and I loved singing it! I definitely want to do that one again soon. I know a few of her other songs are available--not crazy about "Only Time"; it was overplayed when it first came out--but I would love to find some of her others on karaoke, like "Anywhere Is", "Pilgrim", or "Caribbean Blue". _Eny--a_ them will do. *dodging thrown objects because I just made a silly pun*

I guess I should have just asked "What are your favorite songs that you enjoy singing regularly?"

I was curious to see what different people sing and if there were any of your favorites that I could give a try. Thanks for all the responses, keep them coming. . .

Gerry Rafferty: Baker Street, Right Down the Line

David Soul, Don't Give Up on Us
Moody Blues: Wildest Dreams, Go Now
Chicago: Saturday in the Park, Beginnings
Hall & Oates: Kiss Is on My List, Say It Isn't So
Marty Balin, Hearts

Dwight Yokum, Honky Tonk Man
Hank Williams: Lovesick Blues, Jamblaya
Randy Travis: Honky Tonk Moon, Is It Still Over
Doobie Brothers: Black Water, Listen to the Music
Kenny Loggins: Danny's Song

Phil Collins: Against All Odds
J Geils: Freeze Frame
Elton John: Island Girl, Sad Songs, Bennie and the Jets
Spandau Ballet: True
Stevie Wonder: I Wish, You Are the Sunshine of My Life, Sir Duke
Earth Wind & Fire: Sing a Song, Way of the World
Bee Gees: How Deep Is Your Love
Andy Gibb: Shadow Dancing, I Just Want to Be Your Everything, Love Is Thicker than Water
Sinatra: Where or When, That Old Black Magic, I've Got You Under My Skin
Nat King Cole: Our Love Is Here to Stay, L-O-V-E
Glenn Miller: Chatanooga Choo Choo
Al Martino: Spanish Eyes
Simon and Garfunkel: Kodachrome, The Boxer, Homeward Bound, Scarborough Fair
CCR: Looking Out My Back Door, Have You Ever Seen the Rain
Eagles: Tequila Sunrise, New Kid in Town, Lyin' Eyes
One Hit Wonders: The Night Chicago Died, Rock the Boat
Herb Alpert: This Guy's In Love with You

Bob Seger: Katmandu, Fire Down Below, Night Moves

Mostly I like 70's and 80's pop with a little bit of country too.

I like to do Iko Iko by the Dixie Cups and for some reason people like the beat, even though its a bit spare on background music.

Hot Hot Hot seems to get the crowd going but I don't want to wear it out so I have backed off it a bit.

Zoot Suit Riot is also one of my regulars. I am not the best singer but I read the history behind the song and decided it was rather sinister and not a happy big band song so I try to put some of that in to it and people seem to appreciate the effort.

The guitar on the Chartbuster version of "He Thinks He'll Keep Her" by Mary Chapin Carpenter usually carries me through that one.

I am not a KJ but related to one so I speak as a person in the crowd and not a host--last Friday I decided to do a song I liked but was sure the crowd would hate and inflicted Shakira's "Eyes Like Yours" on them. Not that its a bad song--just a bit of a stretch for my abilities. Well, it is an unusual song even in the best of hands.......had people going wild out on the dance floor. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
