Babs all I can say is that there are always some singers who will drive you nuts. I've got a couple myself....
For those not used to large rotations I volunteer the approximate time it will be before they can sing so they can decide whether to stay or not. And more than once I've directed the chronic whiners to try another room that night because there's nothing I can do. Both those strategies at least gets them off my back so I can return to work.
Hang in there. If you room is like mine most singers will treat you good and that's what makes it all worth it.

My suggestion would be to shop around. There are plenty of us who don't use filler.
Not that there's anything wrong with it. I just don't have the time for filler if I'm going to get my singers through. And I know that there are plenty of other pure karaoke rooms out there besides mine.

I love this idea. Next time she comes in I'll tell her the length of rotation and where she is in it. Then I'll tell her no one gets favortism and if the wait is to long maybe she should try going to another venue. Thanks Bill !

OHIO TOM @ Thu Jul 31, 2008 8:14 am wrote: The one thing I don't get and maybe you KJ's can educate this fool.... Karaoke Night is supposed to be just that Karaoke. Why do filler? To get the tempo up? to get people up? ... I just hate sitting around for 4/ 5 filler dance songs.. If a karaoke host plays 4-5 filler songs in a row while I have a slip in? Call it "whining" if you will, but I'll get up and ask the host what's going on! If a show is scheduled to start at a certain time, and I'm there after that time, I expect the karaoke to begin! If no one else is there to sing...guess what? I am! And I shouldn't have to wait for any others to sign up before I'm called up.
Usually it's not as busy at the beginning of my show. But if there are singers signed up - even if there are only 1 or 2 - they get to sing as much as they can before others get into the rotation. Of course, I'll also put myself in if things are that slow. Sometimes hearing the same person sing twice within 10-15 minutes will encourage others to sign up! Now I might play *one* whole filler song between singers but 4-5? I wouldn't stick around and I'd make sure all my karaoke friends knew about my dissatisfaction.
About those who whine to management? A message for you. Most of you are already known as whiners by the staff and not taken seriously anyway. The staff will nod and smile at you as long as you keep buying drinks and aren't too belligerent. Just know that after the doors close and we're all packing up we LAUGH and LAUGH at you and your threats to "never come back" and "tell all your friends"!

I am the new guy here, but I must post on this....I love cry babies.. they make me money... they are the best free advertisment.. and they always bring friends,,lol who end up sining and danceing,, OHHH yeha!!! I've had my share of smart a$$ who think they are Gods gift to SONG ..I have also a great way to move things along,I really push dutes when the list gets big... I will line up my dute singers around a table,, they bring there drinks, and after each dute is sang they, tost each other, this creates a party within a party, the one thing I never do is let a singer interupt my show... my rules are litsted in my song book... and rule number one is I am number one...what I say goes, I have had to have a person removed from the bar,and the bar owner never goes against me... were there to have fun, and the owner is there to make money..but if someone feels rotation is moving to slow I will usualy invite them up with me and dance.. this seems to make time go faster and keeps them entrtained.. ... sorta..You gotta take the good with the bad..as long as they keep comeing they like ya.. and sooner or later someone else will take there place.. '..

I'm thinking "duet", but I'm sure you knew that. The spelling and grammer are so bad, I'm thinking Gemini under a new user name.

Hey Bill - It worked like a charm. Miss I don't get to sing enough was in on Friday night. Wierd since I told her Friday is the busiest night. She came on stage to announce to me she was there. I took the time to show her the rotation and how long it was. I told her no one gets favortism and explained how the rotation works, everyone waits their turn. Then I told her the owner told me she was complaining.
You should have seen her face. She said she wasn't complaining, in a stutter. Then in her next breath she said she had to wait an hour and forty five minutes to sing last time. I counted up the singers and told her to multiply that by 3 or 4 minutes. Then I told her when she comes in I'll let her know how long the wait is and if it is to long she has the option of going somewhere else. She says to me - You really have built up quite a business here. Hopefully a light went off in her head!
I've dealt with a lot of whiners is my time, but she is an evil behind your back one. The worst kind. I'm hoping since I've brought it all out in the open now she'll stop or just won't come in any more.

I have/had areal good singer complain that it was 45 minutes since he sang. I told him it will be 45 minutes more, because the rotation is 1 1/2 hours long. He again said he sang his last song 45 minutes ago. And we went round and round again. He obviously doesn't or can't comprehend how many minutes is in 1 1/2 hours. He stopped coming because he thinks it's something personal that he can't sing more. See ya.

Glad it worked Babs!
Looking at it from the singer's side, I think a lot of it is just not knowing when they can get up. If the anxious ones have an idea of when that will be, they seem to settle down. But in your specific case, I detect some other things going on. Envy and jealousy, along with the loss of being top hen in the roost perhaps.

Boy did you hit the nail on the head. She thinks she is something special alright.

There was once a woman named Pat. She would come to my show about every 3 to 4 months. Each time she would give me a hard time about the rotation and complain to the owners. She would come in ill, stay ill and leave ill. Her singing was just loud and I could tell she was just there for herself. But I never could make myself put her in her place. Even though she was one of the most rude people I have endured, I would go out of my way to be nice to her.
Babs, I normally do, kind of what you did. Sometimes I'll even act like I'm talking about someone else. I hate confrontation. Well there was one time......well never mind.
About 6 weeks ago Pat had a heart attack, fell on her face and die. My first thought wasn't very nice.
The first part of July I spend 9 of 11 days in the hospital. (my appendix) 9 days I ate nothing, 5 days I was sure I was going to die, 3 days with a tube in my stomach thur my nose.
When I visit other karaoke shows I never worry about my turn in the rotation. I just want to enjoy the people I'm with, my life and have fun. Why would people spend their money and time for anything less.
Whiners, you got to love them! I have learned a thing or two from each one of mine.

If they know (think) the are the worlds best singer, they expect that the crowd is there just to hear them entertain. Andd by you not catering to them you are depriving the entire audience from hearing their talent. Because they can really get the crowd going. Funny how we never had a problem with the crowd "going" until you got here. Keep complaining and the only one going will be you.
There will always be someone in the crowd that thinks it's you not being fair to them. Can't make every single person happy.
