Families and people have sang at social gatherings for generations. A bar is a social gathering that serves alcohol. Pickers used to come in bars and play for drinks and people would sing. One of my most memorable nights is when I was in a bar and some good jazz musicians were having a jam in the back room..
Comes along karaoke Big corps wanted to get rich Other corps want to charge people for singing. Even the participants think it should be regulated and have a 40 page rule book.
It has never been promoted right and there are still many that believe it is a bunch of drunks trying to be a star and making fools out of themselves. For years families quit singing together Now many are bonding again with home karaoke systems. and singing together. Karaoke means many things to many souls and does to those what music has done for milleniums. Let My Children Sing And quit trying to regulate them or get rich from it.

But it's not even a secret anymore that many national bands & artists now days use monitors on stage with their own lyrics. The technology is their for them, they now use it. Doesn't make it a karaoke performance. They are singing their own music.
American Idol is nothing BUT a glorified karaoke contest.

Exactly And they do nothing to promote it but use the term to describe a sub par performance. When Simon started that crap my interest in the show dropped consideralbly. On any given night we have 2-3 singers that would blow them away..

I'm surprised folks still enjoy watching AI. I watched it twice, the second time I couldn't make it thru the whole show, too boring. I'd rather watch "Springer" "F-Troop" reruns or similar reality TV shows. .
Personally, I don't feel it's a representation of anything I like seeing taking place in a musical area. IMO it cheapens all it poses as representing.
I'm surprised cable or PPV TV or web tv (assuming it still exists) doesn't have a Karaoke channel.

I love to watch AI. One of my favorite singers came from that show. (Kelly Clarkson)
You say all it is is glorified karaoke. I think that is a compliment not a bad thing. Karaoke is not a bad word. The problem here is people thinking karaoke is a bunch of bad singers. AI allows singers to become noticed that would have never had a chance otherwise. I think that is great. Without AI we would have never heard of Chris Daughtery and Kelly Clarkson.
Karaoke is not a bad word. If it bothers you to call what you do karaoke don't use the term. Call yourself a singer.

Agreed it's not a bad word, but calling myself "a singer" isn't appropriate either.
I just don't use any terms to describe the process.. I peer out the window, and if no neighbors are home click the music on, and torture the plants.

I admit I watched during the the first 2 seasons. Quit watching all episodes after the 3rd season & will never watch again after that idiot won a c ouple years back. No karaoke is not a bad word, bit like karyoker said, it's when the performances get compared with a bad night of karaoke when in FACT that IS what they are doing is where it does hurt.
I think the season Daughtry lost is really when I quit watching nightly.

Hey, a contest is a contest is a contest. I despise them myself, even though I have won a few (back a long time ago when I could actually tolerate them). Now every farmer and his dog throws a contest to bring people in. AI is no different. And Simon continues to roll in the dough thanks to AI...and the guy can't sing a note, as he so blithely confesses.
They haven't really done anything good for our business at all, except provide some great tracks for singers - All of Daughtry's stuff for sure...and I admit, I sing some Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
If I'm entertaining (am hired to sing) and I don't use a screen, I consider it singing, not karaoke. Basically CDGs are my backup tracks.

First you need to get drunk.
Then you need to act like a total jerk.
You have to be obnoxious and offend everyone.
Swear as loud as you can, even if it's not in the song.
Grab the microphone from every singer and sing louder and off key in their ear.
Drop the microphones while showing everyone how drunk you are.
Cause as much feedback as possible.
Never fill out a song request slip.
Break the points off the pencils.
Throw the song slips on the floor.
Spill your drink in the song book.
Open the binders so all the pages fall out whenever someone picks up the book.
Trip over the speaker stands so they fall on the floor.
Put you drink on my equipment. And act like a jerk when i tell you to take it off.
Make up your own words and verses.
Sing the same song as the last guy to show him how bad he was and how good you are.
Yell real loud during the song, YOU SUCK!
Throw things at the singers.
That's what karaoke is to me.

I've been to everyone's show.
Every show has them at one time or another. It's that ALCOHOL thing again.
