I would rather hear a big variety of songs during a night -- as many styles as possible too. Like Charmin mentioned, I too get tired of the nights when the Divas pull out their same old, tired regular hits and subtly compete with each other. They're good singers, no doubt about that, but they rarely learn any new songs to keep it fresh. And Charmin, they're just trying to build up their upper arm strength with all those dramatic gestures! LOL

Yes, I like variety too. I can insert it myself, as I have developed a pretty big repertoire.
If other people do the song at karaoke, I will typically *not* do it. For instance, I love the song "Brokenheartsville", but I didn't do it until recently because a lot of people did. I learned "Cool to Be A Fool" and "The Impossible" instead, which songs I have never heard anyone but me do.
But even then, hearing the same person do the same 5 songs forever is really boring. There is a guy around here that is really good, but you can bet your house he will be doing one of "Brandy", "Lyin' Eyes", "And When I Die", or "Neon Moon". I think he might have one more, but it probably doesn't get wheeled out until later. This has been the same for the two years I have been singing, anyway.
Also, I notice more and more the phenomen they call jūhachiban in Japan, meaning one song that a singer does well. A guy got up last night and *nailed* "Traveling Band", then did eminently forgettable jobs on about 3 songs in a row after that.

I try hard to keep my shows fresh. I learn new songs every week.
While I have the regulars who sing the same songs, my location results in a different mix of people each night.
I try to add my new "stuff" to the mix when and where appropriate.
lately, I have been adding songs from the "Dangerous" disks set and The Mavericks. People love my "Southern Man" and "Air That I Breathe"....closed the last two shows with those.

In all the time I've been doing this stuff on computer, I've never gotten into recording. I've never tried to record a live performance either. Not sure how to do it. I would love to record but don't know where to start.

Some really informative stuff here..but knowing a lot of songs, and having a wide vocal range, does not a singer make, good or bad. During my show, i have this older lady, sings like a canary. Knows maybe 6 or 8 songs tops. But sings better then anyone in the place. Because she knows how to use what she's got. She is to my way of thinking a good singer. Now, i'm not really in a position to speak on the merits of good vocal presentation {try saying that three times fast}. But like most of us, i know what i like to hear, and what sounds pleasurable to me. One thing that kinda irritates me, is to listen to the likes of, George Stait, Kenny Cheesey, Elvis, Alan Jackson, George Jones, with none of them being there. I often wonder how these same people would sound if they would just be themselves, and sing with their own voice. And those awful phoney wannabe southern accents. I have a bit...ummmm..of a hillbilly voice...at least...ummm...that's what i've been told. Couldn't prove it by me. But i find it a da** curse. How someone would want to deliberately sing in a hillbilly voice, is beyond my comprehension. I know...i know...may my hide be locked up in a room full of elvis impersonators. The voice is an instrument that needs to be practiced, and fine tuned. That's why my singing sucks. I think along with singing, goes timing, presentation, phrasing. But what is worse? ummm....listening to me is sure agony. So i would say i am.......... ![whistle ](./images/smilies/emot-whistle.gif)

I'm not sure I understand the question. The more of a vocal range you have, the more song options you have. Anyone can have a large repertoire of songs to sing, not anyone can have an impressive vocal range.
All I'm getting from the question is which would you rather have, something you have control over or something you have no control over? Makes no sense to me.

Vickie...sweet friend, you are so nice to me. But in all sincerity, you got it going on. You can sing anything, by anyone, at any time. You are one very talented young lady. You make it sound so very easy, and i enjoy listening to you and the others on the showcase. I learn and pick up pointers, by just listening to you, and my other friends on the showcase. Thank you for the wonderful music you share with us. And for the nice things you say about my humble offerings. I am not a singer, but i enjoy it, and it's fun. So i guess that's all that matters. But thank goodness, for pros like you, so i can really enjoy good singing, and great songs. It's always a pleasure to hear what you sub for us. Thanks for your kindness, and putting up with me. George

I find musicality is much more important than range.
I have a range which is pretty good for a voice of my type. But my tessitura is much more limited, as it is for all but the most exceptional singers. (And we are talking a very small club like Elvis, George Strait, Bing Crosby et al -- singers who are comfortable both as tenor/lyric and as bass.)
I can hit all kinds of notes that I would never want to sing on a regular basis. Range is not necessary for repertoire -- even as a bass-baritone. I can sing notes in the tenor range, and there are hundreds of songs where I can hit the notes. But I limit my peformance songs to the few dozen that really fit my tessitura. I am interested in being musical, not gymnastic. ![Cool 8-)](./images/smilies/icon_cool.gif)

I love Tim McGraw and especially his hit "Just to See You Smile". I can hit every note, from down 3 to up 1 in key. But it will never be a good song for me.
I woudn't even try Conway Twitty -- Charlie Pride is more like it. ![Cool 8-)](./images/smilies/icon_cool.gif)

George hon that is so untrue...do you ever hear me do whitney or celine? no sir...I stick to stuff that is in my range and the majority of my range leads me to male songs. But do you not listen to yourself and feel you have done a good job? Cos I have yet to hear you do a bad one George.

Yeah, I used to try and only do songs that noone else does.......keep it interesting, keep it changing. I too have people that sing the same 2 or 3 songs, every night. Now, they usually do these songs very well, but that becomes rather boring. I would love to have a larger vocal range, but sadly....I don't so I have to go with a small range of stuff I can almost fake. If I try to do the others, I'm way off from the get-go!.....MrD

Vicki - I much rather listen to an artist with a voice with great character and tone, than range. Just because a person has range, even if they are in tune, doesn't mean they have a pleasant voice to listen too. I can think of several professional artists that don't have range, but having amazing voices. You may not hit those Whitney Houston high notes, but you have a amazing voice.

I'd rather hear someone who has limited range AND limited number of songs...but who knows what the heck they are doing with what they have. Range is like having the ability to hold a long note...it may add to your overall performance if the song demends it say for the last note- but just holding a note for 20 seconds like many do to "show they can" or hitting a bunch of high notes when it doesn't fit into the song it just annoying. When I was younger and still had alot to prove I felt like I had to hit all the high notes and holdem for days...and as I got older( and more secure with myself) I concentrated more on giving every word the perfect inflection and timing to make a statement within the song. I had to because if you are a PRO- you HAVE to learn to pace yourself to do 4 hour shows everynight. It would be impossible to go balls to the wall every night EVERY song. I said to MorganLefey in one of my first comments to her... you know a PRO singer when you hear someone who knows that "Loud, long and high do NOT a good singer make." She is a perfect example of that. This next has nothing to do with Vik's range but is a seperate idea. I'd rather hear someone with Diana Kralls Range ( which is nada) do 3 or 4 Diana Krall songs with the same finesse, reserve and class of Diana- than all the whitney houston wannabes in the world. BUt if I had to choose between a person with range or a person with a large song selection- provided that the person has the ability to choose crowd pleasers given a particular crowd...I'd take the selection anyday...but Gimme a GREAT vocalist with limited range and 2 or 3 songs who'll leave me begging for more and THAT would be my choice 24/7.
