I find Hoster to be like democracy -- it is the worst system except for all the others. I find its awful user interface choices to be maddening, and am amazed that they haven't gotten a rotation system together by now, but it works. All the rest seem to rely on Winamp, and that and Pacemaker are flaky enough to make hosting a much harder experience than it has to be.

Whoever makes the software design decisions at MTU is terrible at it -- they have no consistency at all in their software. I have used now three versions of Microstudio, and each one did things differently (and not logically). They totally ignore all Windows convention, and things which have been standard in Windows software for over a decade (right click context menus, drag and drop, tabs) are completely ignored. It is infuriating, but I use it because the rest are even worse.

Overall, I find the available karaoke software to really suck. I have written my own which is better from a hosting/rotation standpoint,  but since I am not going to have the time to develop CDG/key changer stuff I am going to have to rely on Winamp, which is building on a house of cards.

version 4 of Hoster is supposed to have a form of rotation in it according to their forum. But as I couldn't wait I purchased JustKaraoke.  Is it the best? maybe not but most software has their faults and their pluses.  They have Multiplex control and keychanger capabilities on it.

Danny, that mulitplex thing seems to be a large issue with you.   Is there reason to keep the multiplexing or do you just lack the software to change it to mono on the music side?

It's just that I have songs, some of them not available anywhere else, that are only available in multiplex form so I need the ability to defeat them without having to open the zip files to modify the songs. The only winamp solution to this is available in RoxBox and as I have had to switch to vista, I don't trust any of the winamp programs to work well as I have heard horror stories for ones that are having issues. Haven't heard of any isssues between Just Karaoke and Vista yet, with the key word being yet.

Right now we are using plain ol' Winamp with the CDG plug-ins but, hey we have only been doing the show for three nights and are running on a Vista box. We play with AutoKDJ at home and love it! But I must admit I have done more singing than hosting with it...Meep70 is my resident expert.

The other KJ at the club where Isis and I KJ uses PCDJ with the plug-in and he is absolutely sold on it. I used to like the old Roxbox but haven't played with it in years.

Once you define which features you cannot live without, and which ones don't really matter to you as a KJ, then you can pick the right app.
