I love ya too Ollie:)

How are things going in Greeley? I'm having a great day... the sun is shining, I just got my car spit shined at the car wash,  today's the last day of school for my kids- so no more fighting them for hot water rights in the morning, Lol, and... I just got a belly full of chicken salad w/grapes & pecans. My fav:)

yea that Creative Labs USB Sound Blaster MP3+ External Sound Card Sound System is only 16bit card. From what i read to get a good clean recording, less the noise, one should get a 24bit sound card. There's an SB external Audigy 2 NX for $50 on ebay, worth $30 extra from 16bit to 24bit upgrade? i dunno hopefully experts on the board will tell us. I'm almost convinced that the M-audio Fast Track Pro would give me the best quality recording vs mixer + external sound card setup.

Okay.... Don't make me drive across town to whup Don's butt. He's the one who suggested this one. I'm not much of a computer person, or a sound tech. I just like to sing and play music when it strikes my fancy.

LMAO

Nah, it'll work for me. Heck, the internal isn't sounding THAT bad. But I haven't tried recording acoustically yet, just with a karaoke track. I don't want amazing sound, or anything fancy- I'll go to a recording studio if I want to do a demo or something, I just want to sound like ME.... minus the b/g noise of a computer hum:)

Tell ya what, you buy that one... I'll get mine... and we can come back here in a week or so and argue who's is best:)

(kidding.. i never argue with people)

But let me know how it does if you get it.

Actually, at this particular moment I'm sounding a bit like a she-frog myself:)

Danged blooming flowers keep my allergy/sinus stuff hanging around, and it doesn't help much that I live in the middle of a Rhododendron field;)

But I happen to like frogs..... so I hope to hear you sub something.

Did you try the registry fix? Or are you- like me- at work playing on the internet?  :D

(i'm curious if it's going to help you)

Shame on you.

>and me too I guess<

I don't get much time here anymore, and today I'm alone at work with not much to do. So I'm doing a bit of multi-tasking.

Just don't tell my boss:)  :D

Sheesh, you try and do a friend a favor and now she wants to kick my butt!  LOL
This Soundblaster MP3 is probably the best external USB Sound Device for $15.
I know you're on a budget (heck I am too) that's why I recommended it.  Of course the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX 24-bit USB device would be better at $50. I didn't notice it up on Ebay until later. We could still get that one if you want. I had one until a month ago and it worked great, but it died on me completely.  There are lots of other spendy options out there by M-Audio, Presonus, Lexicon, etc.  All depends on what a person wants to spend. :)

What?

I thought I made it perfectly clear.... I don't want to spend anything at all. I prefer other people to buy the stuff for me.

LMAO

This sound card will be fine... I was just being a smart aleck. Surprised, are ya?  :D

BTW Don, since you're here now. FYI: Harley's graduation is tonight at 6, if you wanna go watch a bunch of unruly 13-14 year olds walk down the gymnasium aisle.

Actually, I think the pricipal is going to DRAG Harley down the gymnasium aisle, they've certainly had their rounds:) But, they get along well too, they just butt heads. You know Harley, he has a slight problem with authority. (dunno where he inherited that from tho) Whew, my last child, already graduating from grade school... sheesh, I feel old.

charmin- the 16-bit device will record just fine and you should be very happy with the quality... just remember that to be able to get the best possible sound when you record you must be facing west in the morning and east if it is dark outside... don't forget to curl your toes and cross your eyes, especially if you are going to add effects later... it sometimes helps to have a clown midget on a shetland pony standing on a beach ball in the room with you to... I dunno what it does but it seems to make things sound better in the end...
please videotape the sequence of events as you record and send me a copy so I can check to see if ya did it right...

Glad to see that Harley survived middle school! :)  Yeah he can be a bit head-strong towards authority from what I've noticed a couple of times - especially if he's SURE he's in the right! LOL I think he'd make a great salesman someday too.   Great kid; very talented too!

This Sound Blaster MP3+ really should work out OK.  You can compensate for latency/delay problems if they occur in CEP I discovered.  Now as long as it's not too "hissy".....:)

I'm sure you are aware but Dell computers when input and output to/from a mixer and  sound system will most likely cause ground loop hum due to it's grounding nature. If you experience this you will have to use a dead man's plug adapter or preferably a ground loop eliminator such as the hum X. I haven't had any problems with any laptop but Dell with this.

Gosh, I'll have to try that Tig. Woulda thunk it?    You wanna be the shetland pony?

Buddy, whatever you're drinkin' or smokin'....... give me some:)

Don.... yes, it will be fine. As I said, the recordings I'm getting so far aren't all that bad, just seems to have a bit more background noise than my desktop does. As for ever using it to record for HERE- nobody would hear that anyhow. Acoustic recordings?.... we'll see:) It's not like I sold my other comp, if I get desperate I can still record on it. (on some days... if I kick everyone else out of the house for a bit)

:D

Magic, I'll have to check into that. I'm new to laptops, I've only used one at work, never have tried one for recording. For my hobbies I'm sure it will be okay. I'm sure I'll have some issues that will make me pitch a fit now and again.... I'll keep that adaptor in mind.. TY

I recorded to CEP with the sb mp3+ device, and never had an issue.

While the audio techniphobes can quote all the data they want, I have over four years or more experience with that measly 16bit device, and it works PERFECTLY. It converts the signal to RCA output (or accepts it as RCA input), as well as the 1/8" input and output. There's also the optical ins and outs which I've never messed with. The wonderful 24bit SB card that's mentioned previously doesn't have the RCA connections, which means you have to use adaptors to make it that way if connecting to another device such as an amp or mixer... and with more connections, you leave yourself open to interference and signal loss.

Unlike Tig, I've never been brave enough to seriously test the same device for both input and output. I'm certain it works fine. But for my own uses, I've used the USB format for a SINGLE line... whether in or out. That's the benefit of the USB format... there won't be any lag if you're not trying to have the same signal line do both.

Also, please understand that my experimentation with CEP and Audigy was very limited. I usually send my output to a mixer from the computer. Then have the mics hooked up to that mixer. Then I use the output of the mixer/amp to record to either my cd burner or to the computer... (but again, only in a few trial runs have I tried the computer as the eventual recorder).

I'll leave it up to the more serious minded folks here that will do the recording that other way. Myself, I found a method that works just fine.

I've also got a great usb mixer that took the place of my sb card for my "pro show" computer... still use the SB device for my home pc. Only because I'm lazy and won't replace the motherboard (sound card on it fried... frankly, I'm happy with the way it works now! LOL!)

Thanks Matt. I was actually hoping you'd have your say-so here, you're the one Odie told me he'd heard talk about this particular model. (in a positive way) And so I more or less took my gamble on your opinion;)

Well, that's good to know too. I definately would not have wanted to be without the RCA jacks.... last thing I want to do is go digging up more more adaptors and cords to make it work for me. I got it last night and hooked it up.. haven't tried singing yet. (WOULD have, but Odie decided to stay and visit and we got to talking, so when he left it was pretty much "lights out") :D   But I'll be giving it a whirl tonight when I get home from work.

Oh no. Huh-uh. If it doesn't work right, I'm totally blaming you Matt.....;)

J/K

Thanks for your input here. I best get my arse off to work now, you all have a great day.

Kewl. I have actually only gotten to record two songs on the laptop so far. Haven't really had the time- or the inclination- for singing and recording much lately. But I think it's gonna work ok for me.

Quote:

Actually, I personally don't host.... I got this TO record myself- only.

Yes, I agree. Most here are a bit over-techy:) I just want to get a clean, decent sound when I record. (not that I do anyhow, but I do try) But if I ever start to really want/need a more pro sounding recording, I'll head to a real studio.

Quote:

Hey, I've been to a place called Hole In The Wall.... a pretty, hidden away place near Alberton, Montana.... my mom used to host there.  Of course, they had no karaoke, cause they had no electricity, Lol.

Thanks for your input mexicoking.... it's nice to get different views about stuff like this. (and I had actually forgotten about this thread)  :D

I use the Lexicon Omega for many applications including what you are trying to accomplish. Very nice piece of equipment, very quiet and versatile. I hope I've been of some help. And remember, if at first you don't succeed you can always hire it done. :)

Ha..... I dunno. I'm more the type to expirament and learn from my own mistakes.

But I did get the soundcard, and it's in and working fine. I just haven't messed with it much yet to form a very solid opinion:)

Thanks for offering your suggestion... I'm sure in the future I'll be upgrading, whenever I get the time and inclination.

(oh yeah, and the money)  LMAO

Next on my list is still a nice condenser mic. I already have that one picked out:)
