Morgan, My own feeling is that the word "Critique" does not, and NEVER did belong in a venue such as Singer's Showcase for the reason you mentioned. Perhaps if there WAS a category someplace for the "aspiring Pro" that would be a different setting..  The process takes more than just a person that's capable of truly receiving the Critique, It does require some amount of presentation ability, and maturity as well on the part of the person offering the Critique. Some skill is involved in the actual "Critique".  "Careful analysis" does require an ability, an element of sophistication, that just doesn't belong in the hands of "just anybody".... Most don't even know what that word means in Singer's Showcase, they just hurt themselves with it.   Comments IS ALL that should exist there IMHO

Agreed Steven, I bow to your wisdom "babe"

Billy Check out the thread I started over in Singer's Forum.  A few of us wish to try again, to have something where we can continue the process we got our feet wet in a few months back in that other thread.

and this bothering you, and you spouting about it is going to stop other's from getting angry over 9's and 10's because ?  You are just adding to a fray over that which "bothers you".  How are you solving anything ? or coming up with any revelation ?

What some of us have done is come up with a few alternatives, and have proposed such options.  We don't just spout telling people "how they should act". We already know HOW they act, and are trying to come up with options to remedy certain issues that exist in human nature ALL over.  A few are trying to have a forum for those that truly CAN handle the Critique process, want Critiques, and deserve them without getting bashed for offering then within a forum where people DO overreact.

What you are bringing up has also been brought up over and over and over again Jeff.  It does little good. People DO react and have strong feelings. The ranking situation IS a problem that repeats itself despite ANY of us in here currently.

So talk to the admin and see if there are any changes being kicked about. But you have nothing to say about anyone's comments but your own. Certainly that makes sense. You can only control your own marks you choose to give out.

I just like to see people here being nice to each other and I like to read some of the nice comments people leave. It's hard to think of that as a bad thing.

They could allow ranking priveleges in a separate category from just comments. That would be more competitive for what I see as the "few" that are interested in seeing the change. It's just hard to believe anyone could see anything wrong with people being nice to each other. (and it IS karaoke). This WHOLE site is KARAOKE. It should be handled with the same level of competition as any karaoke in your town or mine, which is normally almost none. (In my opinion)

There are two approaches a few of us are trying to take regarding this Jeff, besides "just complaining about things".  One is having a thread (similar to a thread we've already had, where Critiquing worked quite well) a thread where the more serious Singers that want a Critique category, also know something about Critiquing, can go about things more maturely.  The second approach unfortuneately DOES involve this ongoing discourse regarding the negative undercurrent in SS, because when enough people are sick of bickering about this, We'd like to have some viable option to propose to administration.  The problem is a few get angry about ongoing problems over in SS, and it carries over to camouflaged bashing that takes place in comment boxes, ranking, PM's.  This turns into pack mentality fighting. There's side taking, and it always blows up.  The issues carry over to the bboards, and those of us who usually DO NOT get involved in political aspects over in SS get pulled in... and the fall out just spreads. This is how WE ALL end up in conversations such as this.

I'd rather run things by Phill first, as well as the Mods.  I don't want to go over any heads. Administration, and Phill DO know about these problems however.

Yes. It seems to be a source of problems. I'll definitely agree to that. Of course, maybe if the site would do some contests or if someone would help the site find sponsers for contests, that would take the edge off your worries that undeserving or those perseved as undeserving were getting recognition as being at the top of the site's best singers based on rankings. Heck, who knows. Maybe the site will design a more competitive side for those that want it but it would have to be viable (ie: funds would have to come from those interested in that aspect I'm sure)

:(

I'm wondering (all this bickering stuff aside), since really what is important to administration is setting up a situation conducive to drawing in paying members, (KS being a business)  if "ranking" and "Critiquing" options make the Showcase more desireable.  Or in some way, appearing more desireable than a site that were to offer no such features except for comments. Prior to February of last year all outsiders (NON-members) could also view Critiques, Comments and Ranks of all. Everything said and done, was as viewable to the outside world, as it was to those that were members.  An exception was non-members just couldn't leave comments, rank, etc..  A few of us proposed don't allow EVERYBODY in the world to read the comments, Critiques, etc.  It makes the whole process (even the person leaving comments) appear as a performance, rather than a benefit to the performer solely.

I'm just curious if having Critique, and Rank categories IS a bigger draw, and hitch for some.  OR, would as many take part if Critiques were just made totally private to circumvent much of this, and comments were all people were to leave.  Of course as to whether rank is that important, I suppose that's subjective.  It's all about pros and cons..  If more like the Rank and Critique category, than those who find it a source of anguish, naturally it's not going anyplace anyway.

Actually Jeff I dont see this as being Steven's problem. These are not HIS worries. He is simply articulate enough and an enthusiastic poster. I havent been here long but there are three people I will read and take notice of, because they make sense in any forum they comment on. They are Steven, Jian and Lonman. I have never seen any of these people take sides or be anything other than helpful even under duress

Lonman is EXTREMELY smart !  So smart he doesn't get involved in any of this stuff:LOL: He focuses on what he's into, and doesn't lose sight of his interest in tech areas, and why he joined. I'm trying to learn from Lonman !   Jian is just my competition.  We fight over which one of us sucks the most.  Naturally I'm holding out for the big surprise !!

Yep,  Jian and Lonnie are quite valuable to the tech area.  Main difference between us in this respect, is I've been 86'd from the tech area  LMAO

Be assured I shall be viewing the competition with interest ;-) and in that capacity I may feel I am worthy and qulified to critique

A lot of what I know is thru reading posts by people like Lonman. I just wish all of us who have been around long enough are like him; knowledgeable, and yet not emotional about some of the petty issues that become part of most bboard.

LMAO    Morgan,

Do you realize how difficult it is for some (and I don't know why this is) to just say thank you when complimented ?  You are correct, I've heard this over and over again.

" Kappy just say thank you, and don't feel compelled to act like a total jackass and beat the (@$%&#!) out've yourself each time somebody compliments you"

and that's just my mom saying that !

I hear that ALOT.  I think about it. and I get an overwhelming urge to start acting like a total clown, and turning up the level of self-deprecating humor whenever I receive a compliment.   Which is exactly why I'd never sub on SS.  God forbid somebody (even out've pity) ranks me a 4 or even higher... I'll start blushing, and before it even has a chance to go to my head,  I start a whole stand up routine !

WOW Morgan,  I just heard "Is that all there is".  I've actually never heard it before, but you really took on a noticeably EXTREMELY challenging composition.  THAT can't be easy by any stretch of the imagination !   Have you done theatrical work ?  Acting ?  Alot of Show type venues ?

I have some acting under my belt too.  I played the understudy for one of the gnats buzzing around a background apple on the tree next to the one an apple was pulled on during an elementary school production of "The Wizard of Oz". Yep, that was really me  :worship:

I know what this is...this is a test to see how I handle a compliment...(just say thankyou Morgan)

Thank you Steven...as to the acting thing I have had 10 years as a radio dj

Not Radio NZ International ?  I used to QSL that station when I was an avid Shortwave listener.   Actually it wasn't a test at all.  There was no motive....LOL
That's a VERY difficult composition !  I need to hit SS more often. Instead I yack in these rooms, and I don't want to do that as much.  I'd rather get back into the more musical aspects of this site.

Incidently, Since I'm not one to brag, I actually almost got a better role acting. Since it never came to fruition, I don't boast.... Problem is, the role as a flea, would've required me to get over my fear of those flying monkeys, and the honor of having such a role just wasn't worth the psychotherapy I'd have needed to desensitize myself.  Plus Murphy's Law,  I'd go thru all that, only to find out I'm allergic to Monkey fur, need to take Benedryl, and end up falling off the thing.

Don't get me started about my first :crush:,  (She played one of the dandruff on toto).  Never even knew I existed  :(

OK, need to snap out've this,  I'm starting to feel sorry for myself
