Absolutely. That's being a true entertainer. Going the extra mile to entertain and endear yourself to the audience and being able to think on your feet when it takes a left turn like it did. THIS is what I am talking about. It's what sets a pro apart from a wannabe.

The $50 loser who just says "John Smith to the stage" over and over won't take his gig. Chris brings something more and I guarantee the club owner and his patrons remember that night. People don't notice or care about a pro entertainer like this?! BS. In fact it sounds like they noticed a LOT from his description. That's what builds word of mouth! That's what triples your crowd and income! In fact, I predict he will become a permanent fixture in that bar and end up making MORE money in a year...not losing the gig to some hack for half his price.

They make a flex arm??? Sign me up!! LOL. I DJ and run the karaoke from my seat, but I get up to sing, and when I put on a dance break I join in, especially for the Cupid Shuffle.

Settle down Francis!

Wake up on the wrong side of the beach this morning? I don't know what you are so angry about...unless you are simply a name caller. THAT'S who I have been talking about all this time. I never called you a "crappy host". Your words. Obviously you took my opinions personally. I wasn't attacking you, I was attacking lazy hosts who use price and size as an excuse for getting booted.

Why so sensitive? Do you sit down at work too? <-- JOKE!

Quote:
No sitting- or just name calling- no weak personality here. Just the opposite. :) Aloha

Then I guess I wasn't talking about you now was I. AGAIN. YOU wont be replaced by a $50 crappy name caller. A CHEAPER MULTI-RIGGER WONT TAKE YOUR SHOW! The whole line of thinking in this thread is that the big bad multi-rigger is going to swallow up the little guy for half the price. AGAIN, I'm just saying that if you are a true personality, and put on a show, and give people something more then name calling, then that wont happen. <-- The point!

Looks like you have nothing to worry about now do you...so relax.

Mahalo. :)

The HOST sets the mood and the attitude.

Btw, I have been told by those who book me for private events that it is because they have seen how I interact with the patrons and how I run my show. They say that this is the reason that they think I would provide a great time. Not my library, not my equipment, me.

Eventide, thank you. You should know that I MEAN IT.

Show up with a jambox and cassette tape karaoke and see if you can still pull it off. :)

There is no doubt that a karaoke host can make or break a show. I happen to get compliments on the sound, the lights, and having music that no one else has.

It is the ENTIRE package for me and I am not willing to compromise on any of it.

Same here. I'm not saying a can't be successful without the equipment or library - but I guarantee I would not have the same awesome people that come in now because 1) they sound great (equipment) and 2) I have and am willing to get songs that THEY actually ask for (library). Contrary to one's belief - great singers can also have great times and party like no other all the while spending money all night.

I have been called an above average singer by a majority of the people that I meet, however the reason i don't spend a lot of money when i go out isn't because I don't like to have fun or because I am cheap *well sometimes i can be, but that usually comes to when I am buying products* it is because I am on a limited income and I can't afford it. That being said, whenever i do have money I always at least order 1 drink *usually a pitcher of craberry juice and soda that costs me $7 plus tip* if not something to eat.

But at least you are buying something.

I was simply making a point, good/great singers almost always get billed as 'water drinking divas' or something to the likes. Demand certain things and never spend money. I see quite the opposite where we get good/great singers that are buying Fireball, Jagerbombs, other high dollar drinks along with multiple pitchers of beer.
Bad/OK singers can also fall into the non-spending/non-partying genre. I had one group of 6 that couldn't hold a tune in a bucket (one was decent) - 1 brought her own cd - not a karaoke disc (she didn't want to sing without the original vocal behind them). They came in for a couple weeks & kind of sit in the back (off the radar). The bar actually had to kick them out because they would order one soda with extra ice for each person - and they found out later that they had their own cans of soda (and possibly more) they were bringing in and pouring for the rest of the night.

Just because one is a good singer, doesn't make them a diva or non-spender/non-partyer.

Just saying that expectations are different in 2014 than they were in 1990. You may get away with the cassette karaoke if you bill it as a Nostalgia night, but you can't keep a show with it in 2014.

I think people put too much emphasis on one thing. With all due respect to those that think it is the KJ above all else, I think they have very high opinions of KJ's.

I agree, but in a pinch you make do with what you have.

I was present at a live radio interview with Michael McDonald once. The host, out of the blue, says "Hey we have a keyboard, will you sing/play a song for us?". We all looked over, and it was a cheap, Casio keyboard in the corner of the production room. Not even a sustain pedal. Fully expecting him to laugh and say no thanks, be he replied "Sure, I'll give it a try". And he did. And although it wasn't studio perfect, it was damn impressive. He ended up doing about 5 mini-versions of songs and blew everyone away, and this was at 10am. He could have said "No way, I only use my stuff". Only a true talent could do something like that.

Wish I had a way for you guys to hear it.

And I think that is the key! Most karaoke singers are not pros, often they like versions they are used to - I hear that ALL the time from singers coming in from other places that they do not like the version I have or want another version but often it goes the other way as well where they state the version is way better than what they are used to. For those that aren't comfortable, they will sometimes try it and get through it, but never do the version again or will ask if I have another version - sometimes if they are potential regulars i'll even break my own rule and get a duplicate title from another manu that they are more familiar with (if possible).
Yes karaoke isn't supposed to be about pro, timing, talent, etc.....but again it does make the singers experience much more enjoyable if they can do a version they prefer or are used to instead of one they never tried before and not knowing the version. Often times different manus will do lyrics differently - One Way or Another - Blondie, completely different at the end between Sound Choice & DK. 1 example.

I have a woman that comes to my shows. She is a very good singer. The first time she was there she asked for a SC version of a song, (I don't remember which one). I told her I didn't have it, but I will get the song any way. I got the SBI version. I told her I won't buy SC, and why. She understood. She sang the SBI version, and kicked (@$%&#!)!! She was happy, and is one of my regulars.

Talking VALUE! Talking GETTING STARTED!!!

No need to drop $3,500 for a pair of JBL 1,000 waters or a Bose system...you can spend $600 and get something that's ALMOST AS GOOD: BEHRINGER!

Then buy a $150 mixer, a $90 interface, drop $125 for cords. Buy a cheap laptop, buy two used monitors from Craigslist and you're IN!

A lot has been happening in the audio world. Cheaper components are delivering phenomenal quality. Paying 60%, 70%, 80% more to get 5%, 10%, 15% better performance (of which 98% of people, singers included, do not have the "ear" to appreciate) -- sound smart to all of you?

By the way, I have access to the Bose system where I work and I choose not to use it because the Behringers sound better!

I also have two JBL 1,000 watt speakers. Know where I use them? At HOME for fun, because again, the BEHRINGERS sound BETTER!

And all that said?

In the end, it's the individual running the show that matters most...even more so than the equipment.

(Best to have both...but you can have the best equipment in the world and still not be any good at this.)
