I'm in the market for a wireless microphone setup.  Two mics and a receiver.  Someone recommended the Vocopro UHF 3800.  I see 'em on Ebay for $300.  Can someone knowledgeable lend me some advice?  Thanks.

It would be a far cheaper alternative to get a radio
pack for them.

The least expensive 2 mic system I would reccomend is from AKG.

I never ever thought I'd hear myself saying this, but I've heard both the 3800 and the 5800 series and was totally blown away. I kid you not. I was at a show a while back, got up to sing, guy hands me the mic, I started singing and almost lost my place.
I was actually floored by the clarity and response of the mics. And this is coming from a hardcore Shure man from way back when. After the song, I ask him, and he shows me that it was a Vocopro.....I was in total disbelief. Now I'm sure that some of my peers will disagree with me, and that's okay, not a problem, but to me, they sounded killer.
Mind you, I can't give the same praise to their karaoke machines, which are almost worthless in my opinion, or should I say at least the ones I've had to deal with, but the mics were dead on.

I trialled a senheisser (sp) on valentines night. I was very impressed with it.

Shure SM58 , Sennheiser Evolution and AKG are all quality mics.

To date the best I have experienced is the Sennheiser Evolution Series of Wireless handhelds. The sound was "AWESOME" and it was built like a Tank.

$300 is the lower end of quality wireless microphone lineup so I would not recommend spending less if you are a KJ or want excellent performance. I have invested in many lower quality microphones thinking that I could get better value and if my mics got slam dunked by a drunk singer it would be cheap to replace. I have had to continually replace these units, usually within a year or less and the cost for replacement of these same units over a 3 year period of time is roughly the same as the cost of a Top Quality unit.

My advise is start with quality and stay with it. Either way you end up paying for it anyway.

While the SM58 is virtually an industry standard mic.
and it is perfectly acceptable for most singers...
Would you really call it quality.

I use APi wireless. I either have magic mics, or they handle some serious abuse. I have snapped the antennas on the receiving unit in half, dropped the mics, had people throw the mics, etc, and they always work.

The most amazing thing to me though, it the battery life. I average 2.5 shows per 9 volt battery on one, and 5-6 shows on the other. The reason for the differrence is that one tends to be used a lot more than the other. 85% of my singers use the wireless, and I can't believe how long the batteries last.

The entire set can be had for around $200, and I haven't had any complaints in 3+years....

  Actually, I would classify the Senn, and maybe the Shure Beta as TOO good.  If all of your singers have great voices and are fully versed in mic use they'd be wonderful.  Unfornately that's rarely the case. These mics are SO clear that thet're very unforgiving, and will pick up every nasty nuance of the so-so, mediocre, and truly bad singer.  I would go with the Shure SM-58 (NON-beta)

I have the voco pro uhf 5800 and after 2 weeks mike number 3 went kaput, I contacted voco pro and asked if they would send me a replacement mod they said I had to send it to a service center. During this same period of time I had a voco pro cdg pro dual player and only one player worked, geez.
I still have the mike set 3 only 3 mikes working, and yes they sound very good, but the cdg player went back and replaced it with a RSQ t-2k, but i will never ever buy voco pro again. I should have listen to people on this forum, but had to find out the hard way.

I have a Shure wireless UT/SM58; it ran about $400 so I don't readily hand it over to crazed drunks.  I replaced my corded PG58s about 2 years ago with an RSQ RW4002U, which is a dual UHF wireless system.  That cost about $225 and they have worked out real well.  On the downside, as with many of these systems, both signals are sent through a single channel (TRS or XLR), though you can control the levels separately on the receiver.

$250...I had a VHF Gemini mic for about 10 yrs before it crapped out on me.

I have tried a gemini and loved it. the natural sibilance in my voice was gone both speech and singing. I did find a deal of handling noise in the cheaper one but none in the more expensive. I got no response from asking bout them in here however and couldnt find any real reviews online

my cousin says that the 3800 looks exactly like the pyle audio pdmw8000 which can be found cheaper than the 3800 on ebay

For the record I went with the UHF 3800 and love 'em.

  They sound fine, but rugged they ain't. Be careful with 'em.  I would take the Gemini UF- 8264 (single) or 2064 (dual) over the these in a heartbeat. True diversity, good sound, and tough.

   One note:  I actually use two singles rather than a dual. This way if a receiver goes down in a show, I still have the other. Plus I can set the bad receiver's mic to the good one's frequency as a backup. Though I haven't run into this with this in years, when I first started out my mic quality wasn't what it is now..

  It's the standard for a reason, so yes, in terms of use in a karaoke venue, it IS quality.   Has it it got the sound quality of a Senn or a Beta? Of course not, and that's a GOOD thing in karaoke.  It's akin to HiDef TV bringing out all the flaws and blemishes on TV stars.  The clarity of these mics makes them too unforgiving to any but the top singers......

Joe you are a sweety... ok I am just home from a gig at the restaurant...it was dead due to the sodding rugby...NZ is fanatical about rugby and nothing kills dining quicker than a home game. Anyway I used the seinnheiser all night...I forced myself, decided that if I was really going to test it before buying, I had to give it and my ears a chance to get used to each other.
Argggggggh I hated what was coming back to me at first it was too loud and too clear .
so I backed off the gain instead of backing off the mic... and once the very old couple who were using walking sticks left, delighted because I had sung vera lyn just for them (when will waitresses ever learn never to sit folk with hearing aids right under a speaker in an empty restaurant) I heard the gentleman say in a rather shakey voice..."we had such a nice time, we'll be back god willing!" I did a quick check there wasnt a banana skin floating about...but I digress
the mic... once I stopped using head voice and backing off it and settled to my work I loved it! I did find that sometimes the bass in my voice was too strong but that could have been due to the old habit of holding it too close to my mouth...the shure I virtually have to eat to get what I want out of it...maybe I dont have a big enough voice I dunno...but the shure sm58 I have the gain up high and it right to my mouth. Interstingly enought the NZ army band use shure cordless and they dont like them because of that...you have to be hard on the mic to get anything from them...the seinnheiser basically will pick me up anywhere...rather apparant when I guy I know stopped to say hello on his way out and I said where is Alice...and he said umm I dont go with Alice I am here with my fiancee...oops she was out in the foyer and obviously heard cos she was straight back in there, and the mic was nowhere near my mouth...the mic is sensitive...(vicki makes mental note not to use 4 letter words ever again under her breath at gigs)
Will I buy one? I think I will...in fact I think I will treat myself tomorrow I have to go up to Christchurch for an expo on behalf of the hotel so I think I shall invest in one
As to the compliment Joe, I thank you, but I really really do have serious pitch probs at times and I cant get an agent...mind you I am getting work, and that is the main thing.
