Keith, you make a good living, you work hard for your money.  If you want it, can afford it, why not ?  At our age money is to spend.  Those are nice trucks.  I could think of FAR more foolish things to do with money. A new truck is hardly squandering it. You rely on a vehicle to get where-ever you need to go.. You aren't exactly within walking distance of anyplace, so a nice car is practical for you...You can sell what you have now, give it to your wife, whatever....  If you really want it, and there aren't other things you'd rather have, treat yourself !  As to color ?  Only thing I usually take into consideration is a practical color, something that doesn't show every spot of dirt, and now-adays unfortuneately a color that isn't overly difficult to match when you need a touch up paint job, or even a quarter panel repainted. I have yet to have a car that makes it thru even one year without someone else dinging it, rolling a cart into it etc, careening into part of it, Ct. is the worst state in terms of it's drivers... The first few years I always go running to the body shop too, to have the work done.. I can't stand those first few dings in a nice new car. If you really want it !  Why not ?  Assuming there is no reason NOT to buy it... Go ahead, have fun!  It's only foolish if you have many other expenses you can't meet. I assume this isn't the case. You also don't really have to put aside alot for possible medical situations because you are a Veteran, and have decent bene's too.  You've planned your life out, treating yourself is important !  You treat others, now treat YOU...

You also invest your money wisely.  You are frugal. Up here Casino's are only 10-15 years old. My idea of trouble, are a few friends who will take that 50K, and head down to Casino's with it.. Eventually they are going to get screwed..  You don't do that...  Blessings !   Treat yourself !

That is a purdy truck Keith.  I think you should go for it!!!  You've been a good boy.  Wht settle for something less when you have worked hard and it is something you really want.  

My problem would be the colors, I don't care for any of the color choices.

I agree!...I want plain bright white......I love white especially in this blistering Louisiana heat....It would have to be silver as they don't offer white.

I have to totally aggree with that Gi...I dated a couple of guys that had the big trucks like that and found that to be very very true...  Rich has a little truck and I am happy for that....

That's a perty truck Keith. I have to admit I like that horsepower and that engine. That could get me out of some nasty binds such as the one I had in my Tahoe a few years ago in the Tx panhandle where a tornado was about to run me over coming up from the passenger side. This was a fast moving storm system with most of it coming in at over 80 mph and the tornado was on the front side. When my chase partner and I realized what it was we got the heck out. I had just tuned it with new Platinum plugs. Problem is the upper speed range evokes a type of governor that retards the throttle.  At times like that I can typically use all that speed and more. The periphery of rotation hit us and I nearly lost it. We broke free only to find later on that 30 telephone poles along the road had been blown over. I was a bit afraid at the time of this happening. You don't want to run over telephone poles while going fast. However, all was good.

Anyway it's tough to take something that pretty near a storm. I've had new vehicles around them before and it makes a person paranoid. You probably do some stuff where you'd worry about the paint job too at times. Heck I know Louisianna gets a lot of hail storms too.

Other problem with vehicles is they drop their value so much. Obviously better to invest that money in stocks or funds, or a home. I kind of agree with the experiential concept - that's kind of how I am. Then again, if you just have money to throw at it and won't even notice, then buy what you want.

The Truth Is Out There

I've been reading (see below) and also have seen this type of thing on TV.  It makes sense!  You COULD save that 50k, buy a 20K car then take the 30 grand and spend it on experiences, such as traveling to exotic or hard to reach places, or take an icebreaker out to Anarctica for 5000 bucks!  I don't know what kind of person you are, but going in another direction, I think you can spend like 10 grand and learn how to race REAL race cars over a week-long school somewhere, then you get to race them!  That truck will get old, get dings, get stolen, but no one can take your memories of great times to be had.

Spending Your Money on Doing Things vs. Owning Things Will Make You Happier


When it comes to our most valuable assets, most are things that cannot be bought. Family and friends would certainly apply to this category. So would your health, time, knowledge, or, as Mark Twain said, truth. It would be impossible to put a price tag on any of the above.

Go ahead and splurge on that vacation; you'll be happier!

But when it comes to spending your dollars wisely, it turns out that some purchases may be wiser than others--at least as far as happiness is concerned.

Let's say you get a bonus at work. Do you spend it on a new fall wardrobe or a vacation? If you want to be happier, Leaf Van Boven, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, says you should spend it on the latter. Spending your money on things you can do, as opposed to things you can have, will make you happier in the long run, he says.

"We found that people receive more enduring pleasure and satisfaction from investing in life experiences than material possessions," says Van Boven.

Taken from a practical perspective, this seems to make sense. If your house was burning down and you only had time to grab one material possession, what would it be? For many, it would be their photo album. The memories of different experiences that those photos conjure up are priceless.

But what about scientifically? A national survey involving more than 12,000 participants, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, found similar results. When asked which made them happier, an experiential purchase or a material one, most people chose the experiential purchase.

Van Boven conducted a follow-up experiment and found that, without a doubt, students felt more positive after thinking about an experiential purchase than a material one.

But why? Van Boven says there are three possible reasons why purchases made with the intention of acquiring a life experience make people happier than material purchases.

Experiential purchases are more open to positive reinterpretations. "For example, if you go on a hiking trip, and the weather is terrible, you might not view it as a pleasurable experience in the here and now. Instead, you may view it as a challenge, and over time remember the positive aspects of the experience more than the negative aspects. With material things you can't do this, because they are what they are," said Van Boven.

Experiential purchases are a more meaningful part of a person's identity. "Our culture highly values accomplishing goals and challenging oneself. We strongly value accomplishments," says Van Boven. "Also, experiences tend to be associated more with deeper personal meanings than possessions."

Experiential purchases contribute more to successful social relationships. "Experiences foster relationships because you tend to do things with other people, so there is a great social aspect to it. Furthermore, we often share stories about experiences because they're more fun to talk about than material possessions. They are simply more entertaining," Van Boven said.

Are Materialistic People Happy?

Viewing life materialistically may make you unhappy.

Overall, studies have found that people who value material possessions highly or have a materialistic view about life are more likely to have poor psychological functioning and lower life satisfaction.

"The cycle of materialistic pursuits is disappointing and exhausting in the long run and can make people perpetually unhappy," said Robert Arkin, professor of psychology at Ohio State University.

Indeed. Arkin conducted a study that found a certain group of people is more likely to value materialistic things than others: people who face chronic self-doubt. "Feelings of self-doubt can send people looking for meaning in their lives, with a goal toward boosting their self-worth. If they aren't deriving a sense of self-worth from other parts of their lives, they may feel that owning a lot of things proves they are successful."
