So I am reayd to gte some PA stuff for my basement. I currently have s SM58 wireless... mic but thats about it. I need everything else.
Last time you guys recommended the JBL EON 15P. I am looking to keep cost down, so actually decided to go with only one speaker. Do you guys think its a good idea? My basement is about 2200 cubic feet. I would of course like to have some bass as well. Thing is the 15" driver seemed a little too big for me, especially on the JBLs. The speaker is just too bulky for my basement which already has a HT setup.
I started look at the SRM450 next as it got good reviews on here. I went to Sam Ash and also compared them to the Electrovoice SX100a speakers. I could not find any reviews on those EV (powered) speakers anywhere online. But they sounded good to me and where also 12" but the speaker itself was smaller and looked good. They hooked it up to a keyboard (I know store was closing so they had no time) and played some bass demo or watever and it soudned pretty much the same to me I dunno. What do you guys tihnk? Oh yea and the EV was $50 cheaper...
The guy there also told me that the SRM450 can overheat if ran for too lonng and even showed me how big the heatsink on the back was copared to the EV. Should I be concerned about this?
So now that you know a a little about what I want and the budget can you guys please help me out? Is it okay to run one speaker? I need the speaker to be powered and I need to pick a good mixer w/ effects to go along with this. So please make suggestions and comments etc... Thanks guys.

or should I just go with one Yamaha S115V speaker, and an emx5000 mixer? Or perhaps I should just go with one of the Karaoke "systems" for $1100. Anywa please help me out guys i need to make the best decision because its a lot of $ and I will be only doing this once. Again its strictly for home use and IW ant to hear bass as well without me adding a sub since this will clutter my basement to much because I already have a HT sub. Thakns guys.

What is your budget for Player, Amp, Mixer, Speakers, Cables?
Are you planning on using it for anything other than in home use?

Great questions thank you Flipper.
No nothing other than home use.
budget is about $1000-$1300. Including cables etc...
I already have the player, and the mic...
Now Im back to square one . Should I get the Yamaha powered mixer EMX5000 and the Yamaha passive or cfx12 and a srm450 or the jbl whatever you recommend. Again Im still looking on your opnions on going with one speaker to save space and that way I can afford to get a better speaker. I also need this to have bass without having a sub. Thanks.

All right. Did some more research and I think I have it narrowed down.
Yamaha EMX5000 12-channell mixer and Yamaha S115V "Club" Speaker.
What do you think? I dont know much about the power ratings and stuff but the reviews seem favorable. Is this correctly matched? Does the mixer have enough power not to clip these speakers or does it have too much power and I run the risk of blowing them?
Also I really need to know what you guys think of just getting one speaker. Because if you guys say its not good then maybe I should just get the "kit"?
Also very important. How does this mixer compare to the mackie cfx12? I know the mackie is not powered and I would have to go with a powered speaker in that case. But which would provide me with the best sound between those two mixers and also please consider the effects like reverb etc... Thanks.

That is a great system. Yes it is perfectly matched amp for speakers. There will be absolutely no disappointments from you!
As far as the mixer, the Mackie is probably overall a little quieter in noise level, but not so much as you'd be able to notice an audible difference. The Yamaha has 2 sets of effect as the Mackie only has 1. 2 sets are good for layering specific different effects.

Lonman you are the man. You've always been helpin gme out so thanks!
I went ahead and purchased the yamaha mixer, and one speaker.
But you still did not address the issue of only having one speaker. Should I just get a second one, or do you think one speaker will suffice?
Also since I just purchased everything could you guys please advise me on the cables to get? I know three are two different types of cables that can be used with these speakers right? I have no idea which ones to get because there are so mnay types.
Can you guys please link me to the cables that I will need to connect EVERYTHING. I already have a 1/4" cable though to connect the base of my wireless shure sm58 mic to the mixer, but I need to connect everything else.
Also the RSQ player has RCA outs for the sound? Does the mixer have RCA inputs? Anyway please help me out with all the cables trhat I will need because I dont wanna screw this up. Thanks everyone!

I think you made a great choice. I had almost the same choice as you to make a couple of weeks ago. It was a toss up between the Yamaha EMX5000-12/S115V package and the Mackie CFX-12 & SRM450 package. I went with the yamaha based on all the good reviews and it cost a few hundred less. Overall I think its a great system and it sounds really good too. I don't notice any noise with it at all. As for getting one or two speakers, I don't really know... I'm still a newbie with karaoke systems

Buddy of mine ran part of a show with just one of his speakers and nobody noticed. It just eliminates the stereo if running in stereo mode. But I will admit I am not an expert.
As for Rca cables and the possibility it doesn't have an rca input, there are adaptors for rca cables into 1/4 inputs. I would suggest going to your local radio shack and ask. Hopefully their sales people will know their stuff and be able to help you.
went to yamaha's site for info and checked out their manual and it looks like there are RCA inputs and outputs on the system. So it looks like RCA cables will work for your player. One word though, I am aware that your player's sound level could benefit more going through one of the 1/4 line level inputs than the rca or that has been my experience with powered mixers. Could be I had the sound wrong though as I have only owned one powered mixer and really wasn't happy with it's sound. Thought i got better sound out of an old pioneer amplifier that I use to own.

thanks guys. Im glad to hear about the single speaker thing working.
Now here is the big question. Cables... I read the manual and ofund out the mixer does in fact have RCA inputs from my RSQ-MK-22
Now for speaker cables. What exactly is this "speakon" connector thing? It seems like the mixer has the speakon connectors but do the speakers themselves have it? And which cables should I get or it doesnt really matter? The 1/4" plugs seem to be cheapre than the speakon cables, is there a reason? Which ones should I go with? And if you can link to an exact cable that would be great because it is a little confusing. And which one is better anyway? Thanks.

Your speakers and powered mixer accept Speakon and the price difference is minimal. I would use the speakon connections. Here are some advantages of using speakon:
1) The Speakon® connector has no exposed conductors, reducing the
chances of someone or something getting shocked.
2) The Speakon® connector features a patented locking mechanism
which prevents the connector from becoming unplugged. The connector
also integrates an ingenious strain relief mechanism.
3) The Speakon® connector delivers 400% MORE POWER than a 1/4"
connector. The Speakon® contacts have ample surface area and positive
contact when the connector is locked into place.
You will want Speakon To Speakon Cables in the maximum cable length you think you will need. Normally 25ft is minimum length.
As for your RCA connections from the player, they will connect to the RCA inputs on the top of #9/10 channel strip.
I have the EMX 5000 and you will be sooooooo happy with this unit. I love mine.

For home use 1 speaker should suffice, however in home situations you CAN get the benefit of the stereo recordings on all cdg's. With 1 speaker you will lose that benefit & if the mixer isn't set correctly to push all the signal to that speaker, you may actually even lose some of the instruments that may be recorded on the other channel NOT going to the speaker.

below you will find a link to the mixer's manual. A lot of the info will be there.
you will need adobe acrobat reader to read it.

Thanks Danny. I skimmed through the manual but it was a bit confusing for me with all the connections since I have never dealt with PA audio before...
Also do you guys like a particular brand of speaker cable or are they all the same? Does guage really matter?
And also I can probably go with 30' but 50' would give me more flexibility in the future. Will this effect sound quality at all? Is 50' still considered "okay"?
Lastly, this is the cheapest cable that I found. What do you think?

Thanks guyhs in advance for everyone's help. I would not have been able to do this without you.

As there is not much of a difference in price I'd go with the longest cable.

As a rule you want to run the shortest length you'll need as the longer the cable the more resistance thus a lesser signal. As far a guage goes, lower numbers are heavier. Think of the guage of a wire like a pipe transporting wire. The bigger the pipe the more water will flow. So when using longer runs, you'd really want a heavier guage cord. For 50' runs I wouldn't use nothing less than a 12 guage. Anything less than that you could get away with 14 guage alright.

Thanks guys. Do you have a place where you buy your cables from so that I dont get ripped off at Radio Shack or Samash? musciansfriend seems to nly have the monster ones and they are very expensive. Any suggestions for some good 12GA wire?
*EDIT* Also Im not really sure how I will place the speaker. Most likely Ill only need 30 feet but if I decide to change the placement I want ot make sure Im covered. I wont notice a difference between 50' 12GA vs. 30' 14GA right?
Also any recommends on a place to get good cables for a resonable price?

I agree with Lonman. If you go over 25ft cable be sure to go to the 12ga wire.
You can purchase your cables from a local Pro Sound Equipment Dealer. I looked at guitar center online store and they do not specify the gage of the wire on the Monster Cables listed there. $39.95 is not bad for a 25ft.
In looking at several other sites they do not list the gage on speakon as well.
Check your local Yellow Pages
