I was reading the singers forum and found a topic about crying... anyways, someone mentioned a song called "Patches". I remember this song from when I was young and it brought back some memories, but I am pretty sure the rendition I heard was not clarence carter. I am now on a mission to find the singer of the song I heard. I can tell you it was sort of country sounding, and I was thinking Johny Cash maybe? Can anyone help me to find this singer or song? Thanks a ton!

Patches
Dickie Lee
Down by the river that flows by the coal yards.
Stands wooden houses with shutters torn down
There lives a girl everybody calls Patches
Patches my darling of Old Shanty town.
We plan to marry when June brought the summer
I couldn't wait to make Patches my bride
Now I don't see how that ever can happen
My folks say “No,” and my heart breaks inside.
Patches, oh what can I do?
I swear I'll always love you
But a girl from that place will just bring me disgrace
So my folks won't let me love you.
Each night I cry as I think of that shanty
And pretty Patches there watching the door
She doesn't know that I can't come to see her
Patches must think that I love her no more.
I hear a neighbor tellin' my father
He said a girl name of Patches was found
Floating face down that dirty old river
That flows by the coal yards in Old Shanty Town.
Patches, oh what can I do?
I swear I'll always love you
It may not be right, but I'll join you tonight
Patches I'm coming to you.

Clarence Carter did a remake of "Chairmen of the Board's" Patches a few years later.. "Patches I'm depending on you" ? Maybe you heard Chairmen of the Board the original 60's rendition..

Here's everything you might wish to know about the Song, Blackrose.. Carter recorder several renditions, however a few weren't as good as others in the opinions of others...
Song: Patches ~~ 1970 ~~ 3:10
Artist: Clarence Carter
LP/CD: Patches ~~ Atlantic ~~ 1970
Composers: Ronald Dunbar~General Johnson
Also recorded by: Chairmen Of The Board
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was born and raised down in Alabama
On a farm way back up in the woods
I was so raggedy, folks used call me, “Patches”
Papa used to tease me ‘bout it
Of course deep down inside he was hurt
‘Cause he’d done all he could
My papa was a great ol’ man
I can see him with a shovel in his hand
See, education he never had
But he did wonders when the time got bad
The little money from the crops he raised
Barely paid the bills we made
Oh, life it kicked him down to the ground
When he tried to get up, life would kick him back down
One day papa called me to his dyin’ bed
Put his hands on my shoulders and in tears he said
He said, “Patches
I’m dependin’ on you, son
To pull the family through
My son, it’s all left up to you”
Two days later papa passed away
And I became a man that day
So I told mama I was gonna quit school
But she said that was daddy’s strictest rule
So every morning ‘fore I went to school
I fed the chickens and I chopped wood too
Sometimes I felt that I couldn’t go on
I wanted to leave, just run away from home
But I would remember what my daddy said
With tears in his eyes on his dyin’ bed
He said, “Patches
I’m dependin’ on you, son
I tried to do my best
It’s up to you to do the rest”
But then one day a strong rain came
And washed all the crops away
And at the age of 13
I thought I was carryin’ the weight of the whole world on my shoulders
And you know mama knew what I was going through
‘Cause every day I had to work the fields
‘Cause that’s the only way we got our meals
You see, I was the oldest of the family
And everybody else depended on me
Every night I heard my mama pray
Lord, give him strength to face another day
4 years have passed and all the kids have grown
The angels took mama to a brand new home
God knows people, I shed tears
But my daddy’s voice kept me through the years
Sayin’, “Patches
I’m dependin’ on you, son
To pull the family through
My son, it’s all left up to you”
I can still hear papa when he said, “Patches
I’m dependin’ on you, son
I tried to do my best
It’s up to you to do the rest”
I can still hear papa when he said, “Patches
I’m dependin’ on you, son
To pull the family through”

Also this is interesting..
I found a site that said Carter recorded several renditions of the song, the LP version was the best, his 45 version was done in mono, and is muddier sounding, with poorer quality on the instruments.. So depending on even "HIS" renditions, they might not sound identical... A few were discussing that they were looking for the song, found different renditions of Clarence Carters recordings, and some were horrible sounding, but the LP version was the best. Incidently, "Chairmen of the Board", wasn't Frank Sinatra with them ? Count Basie group ???????
