I am getting ready to purchase some EV speakers and was quoted a good price.  However,  I don't know what to make of this "Speakon" connector thing that was included in the quote - does that require a different cable/adapter than simply 1/4" speaker cables?  Thanks.

Speak-On connection plugs. Special Time Correct windings for accurate music reproduction, Magnetic Flux Tube for improved bass response and more natural sonic characteristics, and Durable jacket for studio or stage use. Not the same as the 1/4" plugs. Here's an example:

speak-on connectors are no big deal. I have been using the EV speakers for 5 years, and they are great.

Peavey is another company that uses speak-on connectors. they can allow bi-amping to speakers. good options.

I don't use them yet, but from my understanding, they carrie  both channels to one speaker, and you can hook up to a second speaker in parralell.....I would think this would cut your ohms in half.......someone correct me if I'm wrong, and please elaborate on the subject........jj

They're kewl....... and shoulda been invented long ago. That's what my new mixer uses, and I love the way they hook up nice n' solid.  :wave:

Not that I'm much help here..... I can't tell ya anything "techie" about them, but that I like them. (and after all.... you're in the discussion thread)  :D

I'd shop around for my own though, you might get them cheaper than the quoted price from them...... I got my two for under $50, on sale at another music store. And they're 50 ft. each.

Speakons are the new standard in speaker connections.  You can rewire your 1/4" cables to work with new speakon ends if you know what you are doing, otherwise just get new speaker cords with speakon ends - may be time anyway.  Does your amp have speakon connections?

Speakons are great because they lock into place, carry nearly 10X the power, can be configured in several different ways including quad amping an entire system with 1 properly configured cable (well and providing you have the speakers capable of & have the amps as well).

Big pain in the butt to solder the wires in to.   Very tiny pieces to mess with inside.

does your amp have speakon connections?

If not this could be a problem for you. I did notice that the link that ShyGuy provided does have an adapter from 1/4 to Speakon but don't know how that would affect performance.

I would suggest you contact the retailer on the EV speakers and ask them.

Most amps have banana plugs, it would be better to get a banana to speakon adapter if it didn't have speakons to begin with.  If it don't have banana plugs, then 1/4" to speakon adapter, but that is kind of defeating the purpose of the added benefit of higher power capability.

Crown started using the 3 in 1 plug.   You can use all 3 types NL, 1/4 or 3 prong  to plug to input.   Banana output.

If you have good 1/4" speaker wire and do not want to purchase another $100 of speakon cables- Do what I did

Purchase 1/4" to speakon adapters --$18

But like stated, it basically defeats the benefit of the Speakon connection as far as the power capability & locking ability.  But, yes they will work.  
He may be able to go to his local music shop (that services) and get his current cables refitted with new ends as well if he doesn't want to try & tackle the job himself.

Thanks for the info.  I've looked into this more as well.  This is for a completely new system; starting from scratch.  The mixer on order is the Yamaha EMX512SC, which I now see from a picture has both Speakon and 1/4" output jacks.  I'll be buying new cable as well and so it seems that Speakon style should be fine.

Now, if anyone knows where I can get a Pioneer twin-tray....please email or PM me!!!
