So has anyone been to a Japanese karaoke style bar where you go into your own individual room and just sing with your friends? I went to one in Vancouver and have been looking for one inVictoria BC.
How would you compare this style to the regular in front of everyone style? LOL

Haven't heard about them.  Do you think they are making money?   Do you think it will spread?

Never heard about it? Where have you been? LMAO  Japanese means its the ORIGINAL. Thats how karaoke is suppose to be :dancin: . Westerners change it to become what its known now. This is common practise in Asia.

I don't see karaoke cubicles catching on here in the "west." The thing that makes  karaoke fun is the interaction with the crowd. Either we want to entertain, or we just want to be noticed. If we wanted to sing Karaoke by ourseves, most of us could afford a $200 all-in-one karaoke system and our own discs. But what fun is that?

I prefer a crowd myself. If I want to be in a small room with friends I'll just stay home. It is affordable to buy your own little set up for home now. A lot of my bar
regulars have some sort of set up of their own.

I know there are little karaoke studios, where you can go and record a song for a fee, and I can see how that would be profitable. But, Robotan, you've got me curious about this. What did it cost? How was the sound?

Everybody else - would you want to this? How much per hour would you be willing to pay? Would it matter if you could bring your own music?

I suppose in very large cities, like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago there might be a large enough market to support something like this. I'm not sure it would work in small or medium sized towns, though,

I suspect it's a cultural thing..

Here in L.A., several karaoke box outfits keep busy with small groups of asians,,

I actually checked out one, and it's all tape, no ability to play CD+G, and no disks sold..  :(

Oh, well, another day..  LMAO

The ones i've seen (we do have a handful) are a basic laser library, no cdg capability & a small sound system (smaller than most home stereos).  Charge by the hour, the one I looked into was $45 per hour or $250 for 6 hours - this included a fruit & veggie tray, no alcohol allowed.

I live in a Chicago suburb and don't think it would fly here. I don't
know, I thought it was silly when they started selling bottled water and look how that caught on.

What crowd would go for that kind of thing? The younger crowd likes to drink a lot and party with a lot of friends. They swarm to the big night clubs. They want to meet
the opposite sex. Your older crowd can afford to have a karaoke system in their house for private get togethers. Gosh- they even have karaoke on cable tv now. You can invite people to your house and just use your cable service.

The only market for this is people who may want to record their voice.

These really aren't designed for younger drinking crowds, they are set up (originally for Japanese businessmen to get together for meetings then to have entertainment) for private parties.  Say you don't want to go to a bar, you bring the people that you want & have at singing the entire time.  You know whos going to be singing & when because it's your group only.

Which is why the karaoke boxes may just fade away as well, they are less common that they even used to be a few years back since the home units/systems are becoming more affordable & popular.
