I agree too .... Its usually better to keep the two seperate.  However, MANY of our wedding bookings come from our KARAOKE singers... who obviously LOVE karaoke, as do many of their friends.  When a potential bride and groom tell us they want Karaoke... we usually encourage them to consider having it for a "portion" of the wedding... and we almost always suggest "the later the better".  Typically, if the couple insists on Karaoke ... its during the last hour or hour and a half of the reception ... when those that are still there .. are usually the ones that want to really "party".  By that point in a reception ... all of the formalities of the day ... are over ... and many have decided to leave.

I too find that DJ'ing .. involves a great deal more ... in the sense that you really "set the mood" ... and "run the show" in regard to making sure all of the 'key' events happen in the correct sequence.  I am often the busiest person at a wedding .. as the liaisson between the DJ, the reception staff, and the wedding party.  It really is the DJ that coordinates all those things that create the "memories" from a wedding .. and it is their job to keep the event focused on the wedding couple... and keeping it a very "special day".
