I'm not terribly new to being a KJ, and I have what I think is a respectable setup.  I've done a couple of regular gigs at bars that I got through word of mouth.  It helps when your day job is working for a place that sells a lot of lighting and sound equipment to bars...

Anyway, I don't have that job anymore, so I don't have those contacts, plus I'm in a new city (Houston), and I'm looking for any advice from the veteran KJ's out there as to what works for finding gigs.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

the best thing you can do is make a note of places who might want/need karaoke as you're driving around.  in the evenings drop in and visit those places you've seen.  go early in the evening so the manager will likely have more time to talk to you.  make sure you're in good standing with any other gigs you have so you can give references.  what part of houston are you in?  i have relatives in Katy and in Baytown who may be able to give me some ideas for you to check out.  it never hurt to "know" someone.

Skillet, I don't have any major advice for you...but I'm just wondering...

You wouldn't happen to be from the DFW area would you?

I knew a guy "skillet" a couple years ago...not THAT common a nickname...so I had to ask...

I am presently in Pasadena.  Specifically, very close to Beltway 8 & Fairmont Parkway.  Baytown is probably about 20 min from where I'm at.  Katy is probably about an hour.  Any help you could pass my way would be greatly appreciated.  I presently have zero gigs, and the previous ones that I had I did leave in good standing.

I used to live on the DFW area about five years ago.  I used to work for the Guitar Center that was on Spring Valley and Dallas Pkwy, which is where I picked up the nickname Skillet.  They moved me around quite a bit.  One of the reasons that I don't work for them anymore.  Four moves in three states in five and a half years.
